The country remains safe by Western standards, but crime is more common and data are scarce. (I thought that this was an interesting article. I thought that it was unusual that if you look at the picture in the article, the Chinese cops have POLICE (in english) on their jackets.

I saw plenty of crime when I visited china. The only difference is the cops either stood by while it happened or didn't care unless central planning authorized a crackdown.

I met a police Chief (long retired) who told me how when he visited China in the 1980s, he suggested to his counterpart that the police should wear patches to make themselves stand out. At the time, everybody wore the same Mao jackets, including the police.
