View Full Version : Picked up my Ruger :)

Well, here she is. :) I picked up the Ruger SR1911 that's been sitting at my LGS for the last three weeks.

As I've stated before, at $600, this 1911 is a deal. Of course, I haven't had it to the range yet, but all the reports I've seen have been great. Other than the beavertail to frame fitting being a bit sloppy, I'm impressed with everything about the gun. There is very little to no slide to frame movement, there is no stupid firing pin safety at all, the mainspring housing is steel (unlike many in this price range or even above), the finish is even, the small parts look good, the rollmarks are well done, the hammer and Ed Brown-esque grip safety look great, the Novak sights are large and easy to see, the grips are grippy and attractive, there are no front serrations, and the Dan Wesson-like three hole trigger is crisp.

There really isn't much not to like about the SR1911. Some may not like the black controls against the matte stainless slide and frame, but its not a big deal for me.

Here are some pics...

...yes, it comes in a cardboard box.

Here's something you don't see everyday. This gun comes with a flush fitting 7-round mag and an 8-round mag with the base plate. It comes comes with a small soft case inside the box (which is more than you get with Les Baer. :tongueout:)

Your pics look slightly better than mine. Even the box pic. Looking forward to your range report, all I could compare it to was my Heritage. You have slightly more to choose from to compare it to. I'm anxious to go back again to see if the gun's accuracy (and mine) improve when she's been shot a few more times. When you said this month, you really ment this month as today is the first.

Brian, I think I mentioned before that y'all ought to do a comparo between the SA RO and the Ruger. I'm trying to wean some Glockers off plastic onto the 1911 platform. I'm winning but they're used to $500 Lego pricing.

Ever done any work with the super alloys?

waspalloy, hastalloy, tungsten carbide, chrome carbide, nickel...if it's in the aircraft industry, i've cut it. and i'd rather machine them all than 300 series stainless. it just won't break a chip. beautiful finish, but damn it's a pain. like i said, you can alloy it and make it easier, but still. there's a reason stainless guns cost a little more.

i see your screen name is cobra. done a little work on those too. hueys, harriers, f-18s, 46's and 53s, c130s, and the beloved ea6b. and we're tooling up now for the osprey at Cherry Point. awesome bird. forget the press. it's a game changer. when i was 18, i didn't plan on being a machinist. 31 yrs later, and it's all i know. one day, i'm gonna build a 1911.

Didn't Kimber make some sort of goofy claim like that in their ads at some point?

When Kimber first started, they claimed they offered a pistol full of "custom" features at a non-custom price, and they were right.

When the Custom and Royal first came out, very few 1911 makers offered their pistols with a beaver-tail grip safety, extended mag catch and low-mount sights. Those were all "custom" features that you had to fit your self or pay a 'smith to do it for you.

Now, even the imports are offered with those "custom" features.

I thought they also advertised national match parts, when there aren't actually any on the guns? :dunno:

I don't remember that in their early ad copy, must have come later, after I quit paying attention.

I picked up another NM Springfield this evening at the LGS, and they still don't have the Ruger's in. At this point I've cooled off a bit, and unless the pistol really wows me, I may wait a bit and see if they offer it in any other variations.

Mostly because of the blued parts. I really don't want to have to spend an extra $100 to get it to all stainless. Like c'b'w said above, I prefer the extra corrosion resistance stainless offers, so making the MSH and Grip Safety out of blued carbon steel seems silly to me.

Lockback
06-03-2011, 13:59
I am really impressed by the looks and what I've read about this pistol. I definitely will have to check one out down the road.
Ruger has changed for the better over the years, and frankly, I think it has to do with the passing of its founder, Bill Ruger, who always seemed timid about being seen as a "bad man" in the eyes of the non-firearm-owning public. Now, with concealed carry becoming so popular, the new leadership has tackled it head-on and produced some really nice guns, including this one.
More power to them.

you're exactly right. i don't own a colt that costs more than 1000, and they all run flawless. it kills me when the perfection crowd decries the 1911 as unreliable, needs gunsmithing to run. absolute bs. the sacs and the lb stinger will probable be as high as i go. but i honestly don't expect them to do anything more than a 1991a1.

Should have some this weekend. Smiff having trouble with hammer follow when the trigger is set at 2.5lbs. Improper angles cut by Ruger. Sights were not fun because they were WAY oversized. I believe it is going to have a Ed Brown hammer and disconnect after it is all said and done. Im going to run with it for a little while before I have the front strap checkered.

Didn't say it couldn't be done, just a little surprised.

Waiting on the range report from bac. A man who has 56,000 posts must have a lot of time on his hands. Bac will get this.

Congrats on your new Ruger. I'm going to wait until I can get my hands on one before making the decision, but I fear if I pick one up, it will come home iwth me.

Pics? :)
Smith and Alexander magwell.
Ed Brown Hammer (factory hammer was sub par for trigger job)
Wilson Combat Extended Slide Release
Warrent Tactical (Sevigny Series) Sights
Trigger Job.

Soft 200gr Reloads, Factory Winchester, Hot Hornady Reloads with no problems. Ejection pattern was excellent. Had to do some filing on the front sight cut due to the lack of groove for traditional Novak sights. Impressed so far with Ruger.

very nice looking 1911 BAC. I can't wait to hear the range report on it. This is definately on my list of 1911's to get. I'm in the process now of getting a Colt 1911 with Unit markings on it for my deployment. But it seems that Ruger will definately be on the list soon after that. I like the black accents as well on the controls. LIke others have said, it just makes the weapon stand out. Congrats!

How does the Ruger compare to the STI Spartan and DE 1911 ?
One of the 3 might be my next 1911.

I haven't had them to the range together yet, but they're all very comparable. Different, but comparable nonetheless.

The Thompson Custom is a nice choice as well in the same price range. :)

Congrats B
I am still waiting for mine to come in, I hear another month but thats cool, I picked up a used S&W 5906 from Buds just gotta go pick it up, that should keep me content for a little while. Unlike others I like the blued parts here n there, doesn't bother me and really arent hard to change if you cant get past it. What I really like on the SR1911 no front cocking serrations, the plunger tube is part of the frame, and the minimal roll marks (etchings). I plan to remove the saftey warning on the dust cover, shouldnt be hard since its lazer etched, and upgrade a couple drop in parts, other than that it is GTG IMO. Ruger definatley did their homework when it comes to what "most" people want in a 1911.

I am jealous, really. I went to my LGS today to put down for it and my guy told me I'd have to wait to see when it would come in. There is a shortage of SR1911s it seems. I got it for $629, but that's on paper. I have to wait a while for it to physically come in. Sad face.

Ordered one today for $565 + tax/shipping (probably looking at $675 total). BUT, he has no clue when it's going to arrive. For that price, I'm willing to wait, but it's killing me. A couple just sold at the most recent Dallas gun show for $750 & $800. It will be my first 1911, and it's good to hear mostly positive reviews.

Isn't that below dealer price? Where is this magnificent shop located in Texas? I'm expecting a special on sale price of MSRP with a "you're lucky to get a 5% discount for cash" offer in my area.

Ruger needs to offer it with a black finish, and in .38 Super as well.

Got mine for $580, so I'm in the same boat as you are. I considered my downpayment on my order a lay away plan.

I actually ordered from a dealer in Kansas City. I can get you this guys info, but I know him through a buddy of mine that lives there. I'm originally from around there, so I'll just pick it up when in town. I was very happy with that price.

Thx, but I'm still just tire kicking right now and was curious for futures sake. So that's the secret, it wasn't a shop in Texas. Big state, big prices.

I'll most likely wait until Bud's has some.
