Bill stalled: Right to keep/bear arms during emergency

Got this notice in e-mail from NRA-ILA:
With time rapidly winding down on this year's legislative session, many pro-gun reforms are in a position to advance. One critical reform has been bottled up, and could die if it is not acted on soon.

Senate Bill 594 (http://webmail.nc.rr.com/do/redirect?url=http%253A%252F%252Fwww.nramedia.org%252Ft%252F93153%252F27607339%252F3556%252F0%252F), an emergency powers bill introduced by state Senator Doug Berger (D-7), has been stalled since its introduction. This critical legislation would ensure that our Right to Keep and Bear Arms cannot be suspended during a declared state of emergency. The NRA has been told that the Senate Republicans are preventing this bill from being heard.

Please call AND e-mail your state Senator IMMEDIATELY and urge him or her to support adding the language in S 594 as an amendment to all pro-gun legislation.

Please also call AND e-mail Senate Republican Leadership and urge them to ensure the language in S 594 is amended to other pro-gun legislation.

As the crossover deadline is today (the day by which a bill must pass either the House or the Senate chamber to be considered for the rest of the legislative session) and the Senate has already adjourned for the evening, it looks as though the bill referenced will have to wait for another year.

On the plus side a few pro-gun bills did pass one chamber this week including House Bill 650 which includes the Castle Doctrine along with amended many other gun laws, many of which expanded the areas where permit holders may carry, a Senate Bill 679 which also includes Castle Doctrine language along with provisions allowing for permit holders to carry in state parks, and carving out furhter exceptions to the prohibitions of concealed carry for those who are a district attorney, assistant district attorney or investigator for a district attorney's office, so long as said person has a concealed handgun permit.

These bills have only passed one chamber and still will have to be approved in the other before heading to Bev for signature. So while the bill mentioned in the original post may be dead, there are other pro-gun bills ready to be voted on and I encourage you to contact those listed by the original poster to express your support for these measures.

Hope some of this information helps. If you are at all interested in issues such as these and where things stand, I beleive the NRA-ILA and Grass Roots North Carolina both probably have sections on their website describing what pro-guns have been introduced, what the bills say, and where they stand in the legislature in regard to what action has or hasn't been taken on them.

We do have a pro gun Castle Doctrine bill headed to aunt Bev's desk....
Although I don't personally don't like her, she isn't too bad when it comes to the 2nd amenedment...

Yeah she is apparently pretty "moderate" on gun issues. Even if for some reason she were to veto it, the bill passed both chambers with plenty of votes necessary to override a veto. If I have to guess she won't sign it and perhaps alienate some of her base by putting her name on it. Rather she will let it sit on her desk, not sign it and let it become law.

Gov. Perdue is a lifetime member of the NRA and received their endorsement during the last election. I'm fairly sure that she'll end up signing the bill.

I'm registered as unaffiliated in NC and voted for her. (I voted for both Republicans and Democrats in other races, too.) At this point, I intend to vote for her again in 2012. She demonstrates what I tend to look for in an elected official: reasonable pragmatism. She's going to make some decisions that piss off the extreme ends of the political spectrum, but I think she's willing to pay that price.

I met her when she visited my kids' school and I got the impression that she's the type who really does makes decision based on what results in the greater good rather than sticking to ideological puritanism. Frankly, I like that and wish that other politicians were willing to stick their necks out.
