1. What round is in your 1911 right this very minute?

2. What is your #1 pick for defensive ammo?

3. +P or standard pressure?

4. What do you carry in your 3.5" or 4" 1911s?

I'll get the ball rolling:

1. 185gr Cor-Bon +P (wish I had some 230s, but 185s are all I have at the moment, and my only alternative is 230gr hardball at the moment).

2. 230gr Winchester Ranger or maybe 230gr Gold Dots. Preference for anything 230gr above anything else, all else being equal.

3. Prefer standard pressure, but will definitely take a +p in anything under a 230gr.

4. Would most likely go 230gr Rangers, as I am not sure as to how expansion works in a 3.5" barrel, so I would rather go with a 'heavy for caliber' bullet.

So... What's in YOUR 1911?

I don't carry a 1911 that often honestly, but when I do it is 230 grain Gold Dots.

I shoot 230 gr. Win. HPs at 30.00 a box from WM. At .45 velocity I'm not convinced that HPs work that good so FMJ are in most of my mags. I've killed at least 125 big game animals and a firm believer in hydro static shock which the .45 provides marginally. I can tell you that if you shoot a 150-300 lb. animal that where you hit it is way more important than what you shoot it with. I've also done a fair bit of guiding and saw way more animals killed than I've killed. Hell I killed 3 deer with a bow last year. One hit marginally traveled 300yds. The other two went less than 50 yards with both lunges hit. IMO learn to hit the right spot through practice and pray you make good shots as it's easier to fantisize about it than it is to do it.

My gun LOVES Winchester personal defense ammo. The cheap 50 round boxes you can get at Wal-mart. I tested it against Hornady TAP and Winchester Golden Sabers and my groups were tighter with the personal defense ammo.

Right now I'm using Hornady 200gr XTP

My gun loves cheap ammo.:dunno:

My only 1911 type gun that is defensive (Fusion 9mm is range only due to light trigger) is a 3" STI Escort.

1. Taurus HEX ammo. This is the same 185 grain Barnes projectile as the Corbon DPX, but in a standard pressure (not +P) loading.

2. Probably HST or Ranger

3. Depends on the gun. In a full size steel gun +P, but in a small or aluminum frame pistol, standard is just fine.

4. See #1

At the moment 230G Gold Dots in my G30. Seems to work for all barrel lengths IMO
In my 5 inch Kimber 230g HST regular and some mags have +P
I have some 200g +P Gold Dots but not in my guns at the moment. Any brand is good if it makes a BIG hole COM IMO.

1. What round is in your 1911 right this very minute?
Speer Gold Dot and CorBon DPX (depends on what they like but ALL of my 1911's happily accept one of the two)

2. What is your #1 pick for defensive ammo?
Speer Gold Dot

3. +P or standard pressure?
Depends on barrel length and bullet

4. What do you carry in your 3.5" or 4" 1911s?
don't carry a 3.5" but my 4"ers for the most part Corbon DPX 185+P

3. +P or standard pressure?

4. What do you carry in your 3.5" or 4" 1911s?1. Well my 5" models get PDX-1/Winchester ranger bonded 230gr. for now but once I go through that it will be Federal HST 230gr.

2.Federal HST 230gr.

3.Standard

4.Federal HST 230gr.

I like HST in either 45 or 9mm because: velocity and recoil is perfect, low/no flash, expands very well even in short barrels, is very accurate and is 100% reliable in all of my semi-auto handguns.

I'll add that if I didn't have any HP ammo I would have no problem carrying 230gr. ball. I've never liked or saw a need for any of those lighter rounds, even in the 3"-3.5" models.

230g milspec ball from Winchester all occasions, the steel cased Russian stuff for plinking

Hardball is probably not the best choice for defense but it gets the job done. When I'm carrying a 9mm I'm hoping that my expensive hollowpoints will expand to .45.

In my .45 I carry FEDERAL PREMIUM TACTICAL HYDRA-SHOK 185grn 45ACP +P which I'm hoping to expand to .55.

All the testing I've seen would surely indicate that. That being said, it was impossible to get when I was looking. Wound up with a case of Gold Dot. Has the HST become more readily available (not that I'm looking to change now)?

Fed HST 230 +P. It's my dept.'s issue round. Thus far the round has proven excellent in putting down injured animals and the one OIS we've had with the .40 HST. Of the animals I've had to put down, all were one shot and expansion was superb. If I can't carry one of my 1911's for some reason(which isn't very often), then my Glock 36 is also loaded with HST +P. Good accuracy, penetration, and expansion out of both my 1911's and 36. I have confidence in the load, but still have a plan "B" for if they fail!
