I have been talking to some of you about getting a 1911 refinished. I have looked at Hard Chrome, Black T, Hard Hat, NP3, ETC..... and really have not been able to make up my mind.

I want something that is highly corrosion and rust resistant, Durable but holster wear at some point doesn't bother me( I actually like it). I am hoping you guys can provide some examples of finishes that you have had done and where you had them done at.

Thanks for your information.

I don't think the Gen III is anywhere near what IonBond is.....Gen III is more like Armor-Tuff than it is comparable to IonBond. Could be wrong, though.....

No idea how it differs from the Gen3. My Gen3 started to show wear after only a month of daily carry. I don't really care as holster wear doesn't bother me.

Ive only had a few Ionbonded pistols in the shop.
I haven't much cared for the appearance. Not black enough for me.
I understand the stuff hardly wears at all. I've also heard it doesn't provide much corrosion resistance.
Anybody got one they have carried a while?

NP3 is great! Great wear resistance. Great corrosion resistance.
I've not seen NP3+.

Hardchrome is very good. Hardly wears at all. Provides adequate corrosion resistance.

I apply and use mostly Cerakote. Only moderate wear resistance. Superior corrosion resistance. And.......any color you want.

Laugh if you want, but color is important. More to some than others.
Personally, I'd be less happy with a lighter colored gun.

I'd have to agree. I recently got a frame NP3'd. A buddy of mine has been shooting an NP3 Para in IPSC since 1996. The gun still looks brand new.

One thing about NP3 though, is it will show EVERY imperfection in the metal. Machine marks I couldn't see in the white, show up quite clearly after NP3. Next time I'll do some clean up work. :embarassed:

I just did the bottom which was in the white. The top was already blued from a project years ago.

Yes you have, Chuck. You cut and crowned a Wilson Supergrade Professional barrel for me several months back that was sent to you with an NP3+ slide. It is the exact same appearance as the earlier Gen. of NP3. The color takes a little to get used to, but the wear and corrosion resistance is top shelf.

NP3 is actually pretty tough to capture the true color in photos. Depending on the light hitting it, it can look completely different from one day to the next on the same pistol. Here is a basic idea, though.

Hardchrome

That looks awesome. I love the look of grey on a pistol. In between the blued/black and stainless. That's probably one of the reasons I like Ionbond as much as I do.

If I ever get my Kobra Carry refinished, I may go NP3+. That looks really good.

But that is my point, Paul. It is more of a golden, pewter color....not even close to grey. I have a really tough time photographing the true color of NP3. Maybe some of the "more better" photographers can post something......I don't have two pictures of that Supergrade that look even close to the same as each other.......:)

I agree with Dave. NP3+ is hard to capture the true life color in pictures. Here's the same same TRS pictured above. This picture, IMO, looks really close to the actual color.

Most of the above pics of NP3 capture the color quite well.
I'd call it kinda a shiny pewter.
Kinda like a freshly exposed lead surface with a hint of yellow/gold.

Hard Hat (aka Melonite). Look at the Severn Custom's website for picture reference. Or try Dan Wesson Black Valor.

I just had my 1911 refinished in Cerakote. The gunsmith just called Friday and said he is mailing it back to me today.

I'm sorry to hear that it is not the most durable finish but the 1911 is no longer my carry gun. I'm sure it will do fine in the nightstand.

I have a DW CCO, which has the same finish on the slide (frame is aluminum, so it's anodized), and it's pretty durable. Been carrying it daily for the past 2 months, holster and reholster daily.

Yours must be extra special because I've seen plenty of Black-T jobs wear extremely quick. Hell, I had wear on the high spots inside of 10 draws.

Here's somewhere between 500 and 1000 draws, how yours has held up better is beyond me.

Hardhat is good stuff. Seen several pistols done in it and it looks great and from what I've heard, holds up really well. Dave does a great job. When I talked to him last year about having a CBOB done, wait time was 6-8 weeks. Not sure if it has changed since last fall.

Ryan (Sarge) swears by it and seems to love it. But, the catch is...you can only get steel finished, so I couldn't get the EMP done or anyone else with aluminum. :crying:

My NP3+ did scratch a little (It's a Glock, worn in an MTAC :faint:), and has minimal holster wear, but is still a great looking finish. Nice and slick, but not very reflective. I don't see the yellow others talk about. :dunno:

My understanding is Hardhat is Melonite.....If so, Dave is certainly NOT doing it in house. That being said....Melonite is my favorite finish. Problem is, it is hard to find somebody to do it on an existing pistol. I think Dave S. has only been offering this for a short time.

I do this to keep cost down for my customers.

Find a FFL that will ship it via usps priority. That's who I use most of the time. It's a bit of a pain because you have to physically go down to the PO ,fill out a form for each handgun and a copy of you FFL. It's usually less than $20 insured.

keep in mind some Dealers/ Gunsmith will only except packages from FedEx or UPS.
