View Full Version : Is a P30 pretty much a 9mm version of the HK .45?

They look similar. But I don't have much experience with anything but the .45s

9mm version of an HK45? Not if you get one in .40 S&W. :)

In terms of appearance, yes I would say that is true. I don't know how similar the internal bits are.
Yes for all practical purposes it is.
It's not an exact copy of the larger HK45, but it's close enough.
I have both and both are outstanding pistols.
You can't go wrong with either one.
the p30 is a different design than the hk45, although it looks similar. the hk45 is a descendent of the usp from what i have heard.

Keep in mind the P30 also has three sets of interchangeable backstraps and left/right side grip panels. The HK45 only has two different size backstraps, no modular side grip panels.

I have a P30s and a HKc never seen a HK only have USPf's a .45 and 9mm stainless. I understand it looks the same as the P30 but being a .45 i would guess the HK has a larger grip than the P30, just a thought..
Its close, but not exact.
Both are great pistols.

The HK45, HK45c and USP are in the same family. They all share the same LEM trigger parts as well. The P series is a completely different lineage sharing only the ergonomically formed grip design and Picatinny Mil-spec accessory rail.

Yeah, I thought they were internally different. So the question remains, why not have the same model type available for all calibers? :dunno:

Because we suck and they hate us.

Larry Vickers has stated in print the P2000 was the inspiration for the HK45 so the P2000 may be more the 9MM version of the HK45 rather than the P30.
The P30 is the next generation of the P2000, in fact HK was calling it the P3000 while being developed. They have the same controls with the decock by the hammer whereas the HK45's controls are the same as the USP. They look similar though but the 45c looks like a P2000. The HK45 was intended to blend the 1911 with the USP but that's subject to opinion.

HK45 grip is longer and comes with only small and medium back straps. P30 grip is shorter & more concealable, and comes with S,M & L palm swells and back straps. The grips are different in feel, and the back straps are not interchangeable between the two pistols.
HK45 has an O-ring barrel, P30 does not.
HK45 V1 comes with safety lever on left side of pistol. Safetied variants of the P30 are ambidextrous, with safeties on both sides. Due to grip differences, the HK45 safety sits slightly higher above the strong hand compared to P30s' lever.
HK45 trigger has less slack/take-up and a slightly shorter reset in SA. They are more similar in DA mode.
HK45 decocker is activated by pushing the safety lever downward. P30 decocker is a button mounted on the back of the slide next to the hammer.
Edit: For me, the HK45 V1 & P30LS V3 9mm are similar enough that I can transition between the two pistols relatively seamlessly. The operation of the decocker is the only real difference, but its a non-issue for me because I train and carry in condition 1. I prefer the grip ergos of the P30 and the trigger feel of the HK45. Both shoot equally well for me.
