I turned it on this morning and after 3 morning from booting, it started smelling like something was buring inside. After a couple of seconds it completely turned off. Now, I try to turn it and the power light comes on for about two seconds then it shuts off again. Any suggestions?

first guess... CPU fan went out, and fried the CPU.

Not sounding good...

Pull the battery, look around the power input jack - you are looking for parts that may have overheated or shorted out.

You can always try, if you are really confident with your notebook disassembly Foo, to pull the hard drive and see what happens.

Again, might be simple, but the burning smell is bad. What this indicates is that some of that 'Magic Smoke' came out of the little black packages soldered to your systems motherboard or power supply/converter... When the 'Magic Smoke' leaves... parts need to be changed.

You have a little time left to jump into the July 4th sales as NewEgg, TigerDirect, possibly Amazon, or Buy.com!

Might need to consider a new notebook if you have the $$$

I did this when I backed up the harddrive and it does the same thing. It turns off @ about 2 seconds after I turn it off.

Is the laptop registered under your name with Dell?

If it is, there is a good possibility that you can get it replaced at no charge to you.

Let me know if you want more info.

The D620's are getting on in age and haven't shown the greatest reliability for us. Better than the D600 .. but that's not saying much. We have about 10 or so still running at the moment. I certainly wouldn't spend any money on it at this point. The HD is likley just fine, as you know, open the case and remove one small screw and pull it out. Take it to any shop and they can hook it up as slave drive or as a primary on the secondary IDE port and get your info off of it. What are they ...1.99Ghz or there abouts .. do your self a favour and upgrade .. unless of course you can get it fixed for free ...
