Page runs very slowly

As in it can't even keep up with my typing and hangs up for a measurable period of time whenever I try to submit a post. If I hit Esc to stop some of the junk that runs it helps.

It is my not really educated observation that the ads and junk running are slowing it down.

What can I do, other than pay for another membership, to get the site to run properly/like it used to? I visit other sites and forums and they all run fine.

I think it is the smilies. If I hit Esc with the general page selected to stop the smilies/emoticons over on the side when a reply box is open it gets a lot better.

Is there a way to permanently disable the smilies *only when typing a reply*, not entirely within all posts?
