A bud has been bitten the same as me...except he actually has money to spend! Wat 1911 should he get for $700 and change? He bought a SR1911 on Gunbroker but the shop lied and they were out. I told him to get a Filippino and a Glock and I have now decided to let y'all have a say...cause while I know Glocks I dun't know 1911's. Should he save some more or should he keep pursuing the Ruger? Or is their another brand available for the same coin that is worthy?

And I saw a thread where Bac reviewed 1911's...where the heck is that? He did say there were a couple he would recommend for first time buyer's...link please...I work 11pm to 7am and can barely stay awake...

Is there a 1911 for $700 that is worthy?

Buy another Glock. I just bought my first 1911 (sr1911), and I much prefer my polymer wonders. It's nice looking and shoots nice, but the advantages of modern weapon designs outweight the 1911 by a mile.

I say get him to get two RIA 1911's One for him one for you for helping him get the first one :tongueout:.

I have shot Smith and Wesson and own a RIA and am very pleased with the RIA. If I had 700bucks to redo it with I would still go with the RIA or maybe a SR1911 if I could find one. I am a fan of Ruger so I would not pass them up.

I have checked out the Springfields and there nice guns. I have also had the chance to check out the Magnum Research 1911. The MR 1911 was extremely nice looking and quality looked to be high but there warranty department kinda ran me off. Way to many bad reviews on the warranty department with to much complaining about things not getting fixed. Seemed a lot like Glock they would hold the pistol for a few months then send it back unfixed.

In a $500-$700 range, here are some suggestions....

Rock Island Armory 1911A1 Tactical
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/jamesrea_2006/jamesrea_08/DSC00631.jpg

STI SPARTAN
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/jamesrea_2006/jamesrea2010/002-24.jpg

Remington 1911-R1

DESERT EAGLE 1911-G

What is the purpose for this hand gun?

It would be a range gun/conversation piece/first 1911...

I've shot a 1911 he hasn't...

He's been kinda sicky for one for a long time...

I think he was thinking the SR1911 would be a great intro 1911. I'm gonna make him read Bac's reviews first.

I want one simply...well because they are so dang smooth ok...no other reason...

That is what I was looking for! Well since I am doomed with the 1911 bug because of Colt NM. Only one I have fired...I'll force him to read Bac's reviews...well because he has been there and done that...

THis 1911 will be shot a bunch. A bunch because my buddy reloads. He's always been more about accuracy then anything else. He's gaga for 100 yard bowling pin knockdowns and he really really likes his Beretta 92.

He's a great bud to shoot with because he let's me shoot every other mag and reloads every brass that hits the dirt...

Plus this is a gift from his wifey...

Plus we'll I just want him my bud to be happy. He refuses to sell a gun so it should be one that would pass the test of time...I'm pushing the trojan...

For seven bills you could get a Ruger 1911 and a box or three of shells.

I got mine two weeks ago and so far it is a great bargain.

Kimber Custom II,Colt Gov't 90 series in the $700 range, but for around $600 I would look at a Springfield Mil-Spec., Remington R1, or SR1911.

I recently bought this Desert Eagle 1911C for $500 on another site. It even came with a leather Blackhawk IWB holster. It had 1 box of hardball fired thru it and has been 100% for a couple more. All I have done is to replace the factory grips for a set of American Holly.

Dude, go back to GNG or the Lounge. No one in here wants another troll. I mean seriously, why would you come in here and recommend plastic "perfection" over a 1911 (when he asked for 1911 suggestions).............IN THE 1911 FORUM?

I would go with a Ruger or a Springfield in that range.

If you look used you could find a Colt or higher end Springfield, though I am not sure for a first 1911 you want to go used. It is hard to tell sometimes if things have been fiddled with.

When it comes to cheap 1911's, the minimum I would accept is a Springfield GI.
I wouldn't at all consider a Philippine made gun, nor one made in China or Turkey.
That's just me though.

While I don't like the idea of an imported 1911. I will say that the GI is all forged and had a company that will fully stand behind it.

The 700 dollar range would put him into Loaded and Range Officer territory.
A stainless GI can be had for less than 600 new. A Milspec for a little more.
If used isn't a bother, I am sure he can find a decent Colt for that price range.

I like Glocks as much as anyone, but the OP is asking about a 1911, in the 1911 forum. If you like Glocks so much more over 1911's, then sell your 1911 and go get yourself another Glock.

Kimber Custom has alot to offer and real world prices should get you pretty close to your budget. I also have never had any bad experience with any of my Rugers and I would bet it will be as tough as an ANVIL although I have not had an opportunity to examine one. Good luck and enjoy your 1911, there is a reason they have been around for 100 yrs.

Like some others said, for $700 you are going to have a real hard time steering me away from the Ruger Sr1911. The lock up and outfit of that gun are amazing to me. It is astounding that they can sell it at the price point that they do.

Yah that's the one I'm gonna try and get. I was gonna go buy a Glock 21 on payday...but I think I'll put down half of whatever my dealer can get an STI or DE. If he cain't get either of those...then I'll go find another dealer.

I would like the Spartan in 9mm but I'll take .45 if that is all they can get. I forgot all about my buddy. I didn't know such great 1911's were available at this price point. I thought the Ruger and the Filippinos were it.

So I'm getting a 1911...even if I have to trade off a plastic pistol...

Here's your 9mm

Stop it! I won't have the money for a week...

Could you make it hurt more and do a review of how the 9mm in the Spartan feels compared to a Glock26?

I'm talking about recoil. I heart the 9mm. And I'm thinking a 9mm 1911 would be heaven. If you read my first post in this forum you will see how I wanted a 9mm 1911 years ago...

I think I was psycho about 1911's. I meant psychic...lol...

I mean heck...it's almost like I can have cake and eat it too.

I shoot a G26. I shoot it a bunch. I mean as fast as my buddy can reload the brass. And I thought it was the poop.

Until I shot that Colt...dang that Colt...I really am ruint.

Really...I mean if a gun can be pretty...and have such a sweet trigger...and fire 9mm...well...

Dang. I'm building another ar-15...and now this 1911 craze hits...

Yah so I'm gonna pony up and get the Spartan 9mm. My bud will prolly end up with a .45 acp.

So I have a heck of a shooting agenda coming up these next few months...

When it gets really cold...I'll finish that ar...

Camu:

Invest the $700 in a reloading press, dies, brass, powder and bullets. Then you can save your way to any handgun you want.

If you must buy a 1911 I'd buy the highest quality used handgun available for the $.

Also, the STI's I have seen in action in 45ACP, 40 S&W and 9mm all ran flwalessly and were accurate out of the box.

According to whom?
The who's who in the world use the 1911 for a reason. Period.

FBI HRT
LAPD SWAT
USMC Force Recon
US Army Delta- no way to really know for sure, but rumored by many for many years.

Those are just a few off the top of my head of the elite that carry the 1911 pistol into harms way. They do not do so because it doesn't do its job as well now as it did in 1911. They do so because a proper 1911 in well trained hands really has no equal as a fighting handgun in the opinion of many. Including myself amongst them.

The 1911 and Glocks are my two favorite pistols bar none. They are so different its not worth even comparing the two. They are both extremely good at what they are and what they do.

I picked up my first 1911 several months back after doing an evaluation review with a good friend of mine. We had several T&E guns sent to use from the manufacturers. We tested S&W, Ruger, Kimber, and some others I can't remember them all. The S&W we tested was the one that stood out the most it was the model #108303. I loved that gun. No issues with it, looked great, felt well built and it had a picatinny rail for a light or laser. All the guns were wonderful, except the Kimber had a few FTF. I think that was the magazine. We stopped using the Kimber mag an used others we had and didn't have anymore issues. After testing these guns I was browsing a local outfitter and I saw the Iver Johnson 1911s. I wasn't really in the market for a 1911 but since the testing I started feeling the 1911 fever. I wound up walking out of there $475 lighter with an Eagle an extra magazine and a leather holster. It isn't as pretty as the Smith, but it shoots good and so far I haven't had any failures. Comparing it to the prices of the other guns I have shot I don't feel like it was a bad investment.

My $.02 - I'd look long and hard at the Rock Island tactical model with beavertail and adjustable sights for about $485. My gun store deals (in 1911's) STI, Kimber, Remington, Colt, Para, Springfield, Rock Island, Taurus (cough) and Ed Brown, and in the past 5 years the Rock Island is the one and only manufacturer who hasn't had at least one customer bring-back for a fix. My son bought one about 10 days ago and we've stuffed around 250 rounds through it right out of the box with nary a hiccup, plus it shoots a really nice pattern.

Check around the net, you'll have to look long and hard to find an unhappy RIA owner, and in fact most of them just burble happy on their piece.

Also, I'm told by a usually reliable source with a history of consistent accuracy that the STI Spartan is assembled in the US with Rock Island parts. Haven't personally verified this, though.

p.s. - haven't seen an actual new Ruger but am told they are incredibly lame.

If it were me, I'd score the Rock Island, replace the grips (mandatory), and spend the rest of the budget on ammo.

The Spartan has all STI parts. Built by RIA for STI using STI parts.

Everyone on this site and some others that have purchased the Ruger love them. I haven't seen a single negative report about them. Plus try finding a Ruger anywhere you can't because they are flying off the shelves.

I do agree on the RIAs. Best 1911 for the money hands down.
