So, me and my buddy went to demo day at one of our LGS yesterday. The showing wasn't as good as last year, but there was some good stuff there. I shot a Kimber Solo and was pleasantly surprised with it, and shot a few STI guns as well. They were okay, didn't see anything special with them. I also shot a TRP that was a nail driver, but had a FTE every round.

Anyways, on to the part I am going to catch hell for. I was at Taurus' table and thought WTH I will shout the PT1911. I wanted to see how horrible it was and why everyone talked so much crap about them. Well, it shot just as accurately as the TRP (without any issues). Now I am not saying it is in the same class as the TRP, BUT I definitely think for the $$$ it is a great firearm, you can find em all day long for $500.00 or less. I think it is a far better entry level 1911 that a RIA. This being said, I don't plan on going out and buying one. I am just saying it is not the POS everyone says it is, and seems to be a great bang for the buck.

Flame on!

ha ha ha. Good luck. I said the same between a SW 9mm Pro and a RIA 9mm Tactical .:whistling:

Have both Taurus and RIA 1911 pistols. They are both O.K. Is one is better than the other? I guess you need to define what you want to do with the pistol and what one does better than the other.

I can tell you for one, the finish on the Taurus is a lot better than a RIA. I took my RIA to the range the day I got it, and it has scratches, and scuffs all over the slide from the spent cartridges hit the slide. I was very unimpressed...

I have to agree about the taurus. For an "entry" priced gun, you can't beat it IMO. I had 3 rds in a group the size of a nickel @10yrds. I shot it two times just to make sure it wasn't a fluke lol. I also shot kimbers super carry pro, sig scorpion 1911, sig tac-ops 1911, S&W pro series 1911, unfortunately for the naysayers the taurus was the most accurate out of the group. For $500 I think it smokes the RIA I owned. And the finish on the rock was horrible. TKR shot my 9mm RIA and he was wearing a ring and there were scratches all over front strap and the slide from the ring, this was right out of the box.

What did you expect, the PT1911 has $2,000 worth of custom features. :dunno:

I have shot several and they shot just fine for me. I guess I got lucky.

The early Taurus guns had poorly made internals which proved fragile for lots of folks who bought them.

IF Taurus is doing a better job on the small parts, their pistol could easily rival the RIA.

I run my Kimber .22 conversion on a Taurus frame (with after-market internals).

I had one.....I changed out the guts and shot the snot out of it. I sold it and the new owner shoots leagues with it.

All I can say is it is cheaply priced (or was) and the frame/slide/ and barrel are holding up very well.

Taurus had a price increase, the PT1911 is now listed for $586.29 on my dealers website.

I have owned a PT1911 and a TRP... I found it quite easy to tell where the money went. My Taurus felt like a brick, it looks like a 1911 but it is not the same... the frame is just cut like a box. Nothing was fit well, and it was just a bad experience. It was an early one but the new ones do not look like real winners either.

I think the RIA is heads and tails a better gun, it may have a crappy finish but that can be fixed...

I sort of find it amusing that folks are dogging the RIA for it's finish. Ummmm hello, it's a $400 gun. What are you expecting it to be finished like at that price? I have hardly heard a bad thing about the function of RIAs and for the most part, people LOVE them.....which is all you should be concerned with at that pricepoint. If not, send it to Bigdog....he can Krylon that sucka and your RIA will be much prettier.

As to the comment about the ring wearing the finish....I'd like to see any gun maintain it's finish after running rounds through it with a ring on. Duh.

Its pretty funny that everyone is dogging the RIA finish. It is the only thing I like about them. It seems to be a pretty good park job to me.

None of my Kimbers, SA, 1911s ever get a single mark from my ring.

You are the minority when speaking about a Taurus having quality.
You expected to catch flak, so shut your ignorant pie hole.

Yup sure did, from people who actually know what they are talking about. You should stick to the General Glocking section with the rest of the tools. :wavey:

Trent, the problem is that they're not all as good as the model you shot. Quality control is horrible.

When I had my PT1911, it was a good shooting gun. Never had a jam. It definately had more features than any of my Rock Islands. I guess I had a good one. Parted with it in a trade that I couldn't pass up. Traded it along with my Norinco 1911 straight across for a NIB Kimber Stainless Custom Target II 9mm with the owner of a local gun shop. I was wanting a 9mm 1911 anyway. Something was wrong with the TRP you were shooting for sure. My TRP has been 100% from day one.

I like the way the PT1911 looks but lots of places I read have 1911 grips and then PT1911 grips. My understanding is the Tarsus frame is different spec then standard 1911's.

Joe, the TRP was definitely not the norm. All the other ones I have shot in the past ran great. Maxim240sx had a BNIB Stainless TRP tho that did have some majors issues. It just took some break in tho and it was like butter! I just thought it was a bit of poetic justice that the PT1911 was more accurate, and functioned better that all the STI and Sig models I shot, then I pick up a TRP and the accuracy was the same, but the function of the TRP was bad. I am willing to bet they use that same TRP for demo days everywhere, and it doesn't get the cleaning and care it needs because I bet a lot of people demo it.

Personally, I would rather spend the $500-$600 on something else. There are a lot of decent 1911s in that price range, I don't see a reason to roll the dice on a Taurus.

Because it seems some grip sights said they manufacture grips for just the PT1911 due to difference in frame. This sight comes to mind http://raascogrips.com/ta19gr.html maybe its not.
