View Full Version : Norinco 1911 or RIA?

My Dad has a Norinco 1911 that he bought new back in the mid 90's. Its in nice shape, other than some holster wear, I would say it probably has less than 2,000 rounds through it. He still has the box and all original paperwork. Yesterday he tells me he is thinking about selling it and buying a RIA 1911 GI version.

He really didn't give a good reason for wanting to sell the Norinco other than he hates the goofy "Model of the 1911" roll mark. I can't remember the Norinco ever having FTEs or FTFs.

My questions are:

What do you think the Norinco is worth?

If you had the Norinco would you sell it to buy a RIA?

The Norinco is a higher quality gun than the RIA. Persoanlly I wouldn't swap a Norinco for a RIA. If he is planning on leaving it stock, then just keep the Nork. If he sells it, he will probably not get as much as what the new Rock will cost. If he wants to customize it, he has one of the best base guns out there. I've owned both and like the RIZ
A's, but regret trading off my Nork, which I upgraded in the trade, but still wish I still had the old Nork. But, if he's dead set on selling it, send me a PM with a pic and a price.

It is getting harder to find the Norinco 1911's these days.
The RIA is as common as dirt and not as good a quality as the Norinco.
Your Dads gun runs without a problem so it is a keeper in my opinion.
Besides, the RIA is so cheap that if he really wants one tell him to save his pennies for a bit longer and buy one while keeping the Norinco.

I'd definitely keep the Norinco.

Thanks for the replies. I'll talk to him later and see if I can talk him out of it. I always liked the Norinco, so I was kind of surprised when he said he was thinking about selling it.

I would keep the Norinco. I like them so well, I have two of them.

Run to your local gun shop get the RIA, give it to your father! And keep the Norko!
Simple as that!

it just becomes a matter of form or function.

I know it doesn't matter, but he said the reason he wanted the RIA is because of the Ugly Rollamrks. Which I thought was funny because they both have ugly Rollmarks in my opinion.

Everybody raved about the NORINCO, but the only one I've ever seen in action was a jammamatic. One of my college classmates bought a NORINCO when it was first imported because of the raving reviews. It didn't matter which mags he used, which ball ammo he used, how much he cleaned, changed out recoil spring, how much the gunsmith tinkered with it, that gun kept having ejection problem. The same problem over and over - smoke stack jam.

So, that one experience colored my opinion of NORINCO. I was glad I bought the Springfield GI instead of the NORINCO.

Norincos are forged steel, have no MIM parts and apparently are made of extremely hard steel.
Apparently they're great base guns.

Tell him to get a Springfield or Colt or just keep his Norinco.

I have both. The Rock Island is a good 1911, but the Norinco is better.

I really don't think its that close, to be honest.

Ditto. I've owned both and the Nork has the upper hand on the Rock. Plus, I doubt you can find a "name" smiff, that won't work up a Nork, where as you'll be hard pressed to find any that'll work up a Rock. Kinda says it all right there IMO. :dunno:Plus, the Nork has a better finish and better sights.

Yeah Joe, the Norc certainly uses better quality steel.

I know my Dad will never buy another Colt 1911, he had one and it was a POS. He also doesn't think much about Springfield either.

I agree completely.. I used to be rather anti Colt myself until recently.. seems the general consensus is that Colt is putting out some of their best 1911's in years..Also you should do what Tango44 suggested.. just buy a Rock and trade it with yer Dad.. both of y'all will be happy that way..

Its not a bad idea, sadly I have next to no funds right now and a crap load of hospital bills that are coming due.

As far as Colt goes, I know my Dad will never give them another chance. He has a Kimber that has been great and he is happy with. So if he were looking to spend another $700 plus 1911, it most likely would be another Kimber.

I hear you about the funds.. I will be collecting my first paycheck in almost 2 months at the end of next week.. Really the TLE aint a bad pistol at that price point.. most of the crap one hears about Kimber comes from their UC line.. Best of luck to you and yer Dad..

Brian, I know what you mean about Colt, I just know how my Dad is. He also will never own another Ford because of a car my parents owned back in the '80s. Its not just Colt hate with my Dad.

On the subject of the Norinco 1911's, a friend has one his dad left him, and I am considering making him an offer. He is a very generous person and I do not want to low ball him. What is a fair price? It is in decent but not perfect shape.

Norinco 1911 have gone up in the last year or two and can bring up to $500 in very good shape. I bought mine a couple years ago for $400 and it was barely shot, if at all.

If its in decent shape, you may want to offer $300-$400, to be fair.

Are they "that" good? Depends on what your definition of "that" good is. It's a solid choice for an entry level 1911 in that $500ish price range if you can find one. They tend to be a good basegun for future work due to the quality of the steel and most smiffs willingness to work on them. Just be aware of what you are getting....preban or postban. There are differences.

I did not know that. What are the differences and how do I tell them apart? My main thing was not wanting someone's project gun.

Google didn't turn up much, but I assume if it is marked Norinco and Made in China, it is good to go.

Oh yes, and I have only seen a couple of the Red Chinese Norincos, but if you come across one look at how the barrel locks into the slide very closely or have a gunsmith look at it if you are not one.

IIRC the Norinco ban was a presidential order, and would have to be rescinded by presidential order. I just don't see that happening, at least not in the 5-1/2 years that Obama will be in office.

I liked mine, but it was a bit rough. Also, the front sight was milled onto the slide a little to the side effecting POI. I ended up selling it and another gun and got a 1911 that I liked better. Part of me wishes that i still had it, but the front sight annoyed me.
