I am thinking of adding a DW Valor or a Baer UTC to the stable as a birthday present... from my wife.

I keep going back and forth the Valor is more New School vs the Baer being more old school.

The Baer has a more Semi-Custom mystique...

I am looking to spend about 1800... if there is something else that would be better. I am putting the Colt up for now, I was going to sell it but I am done selling 1911s.

What would you get? I looked at some built to spec stuff, but she wants me to have it for my 30th birthday... and I am not going to argue (8/13).

I'd go with the Baer, quite honestly.

So I called John....

Super Nice guy...

I ordered a gun!

Getting a 5" Custom Carry with no FCS! He is not a fan of the home FFL which is what mine is... so I may have to find another one to use... I do not trust Target World or the other Shop I know... I will have to call around!

Anyone in SW Ohio know a trustworthy gun shop?

I have not heard back so I assume he was able to get a hold of my FFL and it will be going out. I really need a closer guy... but I do not trust the shops to not pull it out and play with it!

Sweet! I was trying to find a CC without the FCS... to see what I was ordering..looks great!

The only thing that made me want the DW was the finish, which can always be changed. Not like I can not send the Baer in for Ionbond/Hard Chrome/Hard Hat... sometime later on if needed.

I would say there is a good chance my first DW is going to be a Guardian 9mm... it will be awhile though!

I used target world for my EMP and everything was fine. I do know a person with an FFL who is a family friend, but he usually only does transfers for people he knows.

Did you know target world has Brown's now? I was quite surprised! We should get together and shoot, I would love to shoot the Baer! Are you going to the Oxford USPSA match? I might come if I can.

They are pretty much my only option, some of the guys are cool, some are not.

I have seen Browns in from time to time, generally priced at sticker but they seem to sell. Oxford has a USPSA Match? I did not know that... I know they have the IDPA match. I am hoping to go in August, but I have a Pistol Class I am taking with my wife the day before. It will depend on how that goes. I am sure we can meet up and shoot sometime though. I am attempting to join Fairfield Sportsman to have a better range to shoot at.

I never heard anything back from John so maybe my FFL passed his test. He only said he would call if he needed me to find another. I tried to call back but just got VM, wait and see if I hear anything.

It's actually not that bad if you have basic mechanical understanding and have the patient to work on your own gun. Wilson flat trigger has better tolerance than the 10-8 version.

I had fit a Wilson on lawdog's GC NN, and we fitted in my car.

I actually would like to try it as well. I'm starting to see an awful lot of them. But, I don't feel competent enough, and don't want to mess up my gun!

skdmrklcy
07-29-2011, 17:19
If all the fitting is on the trigger should not be much to worry about messing up the gun. So are the 10-8s oversized so they have to be hand fitted to the gun? I may give it a shot sometime.

Of the 10-8 triggers I've seen, they seem to have slightly longer bows. So this just makes it harder to fit. And of the Wilsons that I've fitted, their bows are pretty spot on, and doesn't require fitting of the bow or the disco. Also, the Wilson's has a pre-travel tabs to set the pre-travel take up.

Most triggers will require the fitting of the top and bottom of the shoe into the trigger guard. To do this, you just need some 320 grit sandpaper to do the initial shaving and finish and polish the surfaces with some 600-800 grit. You should polish the top and bottom tracks of the bow. And lastly, polish the back of the bow that makes contact with the disco.

Had a TRP before, nice gun, not for me. Custom Carry is in my range for the base model, with a 1yr plus wait... not what I am looking for.

It is funny I posted a thread over on AR15.com and they all went Valor. For the finish.

The Valor does have the better finish, but the Baer is the better overall gun, in my opinion.

Wouldn't go into Target World if they paid me. Having muzzles pointed at you is not my idea of fun. Best service and prices in the Cincinnati area is at Shooters Supply Shop. Transfers are 30$ +tax. Give them a call and let them know to expect it if you use them and they will hook you up.

I am just hoping I can get it by the 13th... so I can take it out on my Birthday!

I love my Dan Wesson Valor. Never owned a Les Baer but ordered a UTC, no FCS, 1.5" from CJ 5/01/11 & looking forward to getting it.

I have a Dan Wesson Valor (black) and a Les Baer UTC.
The Dan Wesson needed a bushing wrench to take apart until after 300 rounds, now I can manage it without one.
The Baer is insanely tight, you have to break it out of battery. I thought I would break the plastic wrench trying to turn the bushing (yes, I am turning it with the barrel out of lockup). I quickly wore the finish off the recoil plug with the bushing wrench and have to apply a little gun blue after each field strip.
The grip screws shot loose on both and needed a little lock-tite blue to stay put.
I shot both yesterday in a little comparison, freehand slowfire.
At 7 yards I could put 5 shots into a 1'' CTC group with either pistol.
(I don't normally shoot past 7 yards)
At 20 yards (again freehand slowfire) my 5 shot groups were about 3 1/2 - 4'' with the DW turning out a session best 2 3/4'' group.
The sights are very different.
The DW has large dot front, small dot rear and tends to hit low, best for 230 gr. bullets and a dead on hold in the middle of the circle.
The Baer UTC has 3 dot sights and definitely requires a 6 o'clock hold, bottom of circle, with 185 gr. bullets hitting closer at 20 yards.
The DW has a slightly lighter trigger, almost too light so I prefer the Baers' trigger.
I really like the looks of the DW, flat black finish with gray grips.
I believe I like the Baer sights better, more like what I'm use to.
I paid nearly the same price for these two pistols.

Had to call John today to verify my FFL which was a bust. So now thanks to DAT85 it will be going to the shop he is out of.

It should ship today or tomorrow so I should have it by the weekend.

I was also able to get it without the Ambi Safety. I can not wait!
