View Full Version : 1911-only day at the range...
Actually, I'm lying. I took my Beretta Neos as well. You always need at least one rimfire, right?
Seriously, I went to the range for a few hours this morning with about 250 rounds of 45ACP. I took five 1911s of complete random choosing - no theme, no comparison, no anything.
Anyway, I had a blast (pun intended). The choices were my Para 1911 Limited, DoubleStar DSC, Unertl DLX, S&W Performance Center 1911, and STI Trojan.

While all are very solid performers at the range (even the Para), the Unertl simply stands head and shoulders above the others. As I was shooting it, I kept asking myself why in the hell its been so long since I brought it with me. I think its been well over a year since I shot it and most likely a good deal longer.
The gun is so solid and so well balanced that it is an absolute pleasure to shoot. Its got a great trigger, fine 24lpi checkering, big visible night sights, and one of the tightest front end lockups I've ever seen. I simply love this gun. The stock grips need to go, but that's another thread.
Its a damn shame Unertl went out of business. There hasn't been one on Gunbroker in over a year. I remember Sweeney raving about them in his 2nd volume and I can certainly see why. I don't think very many were built. Mine is #114 and I believe that's out of all three models they produced.
Here are some pics. Its odd seeing a bull barrel without a guide rod, but I think its cool nonetheless.

brian, where would yuo rate the USfA model against the Unertl?
brian, where would yuo rate the USfA model against the Unertl?
Keith, those two are night and day. Both are high quality, but they aren't trying to acheive the same thing.
The USFA is strictly a replica and one of the best ever built, in my opinion.
The Unertl is a tough-as-nails enhanced 1911.
That said, both are fit very well.
What kind of rear sight is that?
Joe, I honestly don't know. I believe Unertl made them. They have the Unertl symbol on the top of them. Either way, I think they're great sights.
Brian - How'd the Doublestar do? I really like that pistol.
Only 250 rounds!!??? Someone must spend too much $ on guns and not enough on food for em!! JK

Yeah, I hear you. I did shoot a couple hundred rounds of 22LR as well. ;)

The DS is great. I love the gun. In fact, all five shot very well.
The Para doesn't have the quality of the others, but it does perform well at the range.

Im having a "man" week so after using my 20 LPI backscratcher, my response to that will be ".22's are for girls and 10 yr olds"
On a serious note, I did get some help from the ol GSG the other day. I went through a Scott Warren course a week ago and I noticed I was trying to muscle the gun via the ball and dummy drill because i was flinching hardcore! About 200 rounds w/ the .22 got me straightened out!! Its amazing how some of the basic fundamentals go out the window as soon as you dont give them as much attention!

Cool.
I may pick up a GSG at some point.

I really like the Unertl Brian, that's another one of those high quality rare discontinued 1911s that I'd love to own.

Thanks Cody.
Like I said, its a damn shame they're gone. Those guys really knew how to build a 1911.

An intresting mix!
That Unertl looks great. I have not shot a Bull Barrel 1911 before, they look cool though.

Yeah, Neos aren't pretty, but I find them to be very fun at the range. I shoot it as accurately as my Ruger Mark III.

I bought this red dot for 30 bucks to see if I liked them on ARs. I don't at all. Had it in the safe and tried it on the NEOs and it's a blast as a can, bottle, whatever is out there to shoot sight.

Brian does yours have the new firing pin as there was a recall on them. I need to get on with it and send mine in. They fix it for free.

You know, I really have no idea. I didn't get any recall notice though.

Yea it's turned into a fav on our young people shoot as they don't have to aim through iron sights. Anything to get the youth off "games" and in the field.

Sounded like a good range day. You know, not many people can say "I took five 1911s of complete random choosing - no theme, no comparison, no anything." ;)
You could probably line them in a box pattern, muzzles up, play ring toss and the first 5 that you get go to the range that day.
