Thinking of buying a used Blackhawk in .45 Colt. Largest caliber I currently own is a 10mm (.357 Mag in a wheelgun). Thinking of a hot-loaded .45 Colt as a good bear (mostly black) gun. Any reasons why I should/should't buy it if the price is right? Opinions as to the .45 Colt (in a Ruger) compared to a .44 Magnum are certainly welcome (keep in mind that I do handload).

I really like the 5.5" Blackhawk in .45LC, thinking about a second one.

Here's the deal IMHO. The .45 is a great cartridge. You can load up some hard bullets for it and have a very good bear load. But here is what I would do. Of course after I bought that Blackhawk!!!! I would get some .454 Casull brass and trim it down. The Casull brass is much stronger than regular .45 long colt brass. The Ruger can take some HOT loads. I would look at some .45 L.C. loads for a Casull and go from there.

I know of two Black Bears taken with the 45 Colt, it worked very well. The loads weren't especially hot. A heavy bullet going 900 - 1200 fps is very impressive on whatever it hits. Penetration is excellent with cast bullets, not so good with hollow points.

Great caliber in a great gun (Blackhawk). Impressively accurate too.

I have one with a 5.5" barrel. I love the versatility of the .45Colt. I can shoot Buffalo Bore +P for bear or mild cowboy loads for fun, and anything in between. My only complaint is the factory stocks. They look good, but are no good for the more potent ammo, and the Hogue mono-grips are great for taming the hot stuff, but do nothing for the look of the gun. My wife, who does not like shooting big bores revolvers, loves shooting it too.

Here it is with the Hogues, the small one is a Heritage .22

Sign me up as a 45 Colt fan too. I have a SS 4 5/8" Blackhawk & a 4.2" Redhawk in 45 Colt. I like the round more than my 44 mag, I reload about everything. I sniffed out a 45 acp cylinder for my Blackhawk, fits fine & works great. It was about $125. I also shoot mild, handloaded 45 Schofield rounds in my 45 Colt, Blackhawk only so far. I load the spectrum with 45 Colt, mostly on the mild side, then up to max H-110 charges with 265 grn Cast Performance hardcast.

On my black bear hunt in Sept I plan to tote along my Redhawk with my cast ammo. I'll use a rifle as primary though.

If it's a good price & in great shape I'd say buy, especially as a handloader.

I love Glocks. I love 1911's. But my heart belongs to SA revolvers, and Ruger makes great ones. Buy the Blackhawk if its in reasonable condition, you will not regret it.

I think 45 Colt is an awesome caliber for single action revolvers.
