I know this should go in carry issues but we have one of the best 1911 forums on the internet and I feel you guys can answer then better. I am gonna assume most of you guys carry a 1911 ever day so whats your EDC holster? How many of you carry a full size 1911? I thinking about getting a holster setup for my RIA.

Not in the summer, too hot, too big, too heavy. But when I do, it's a TT Gunleather Mike's Special (pictured on the left below).

Milt Sparks VMII (the SS is also a nice holster but I rarely use it) or Bullman (great pancake holster that is very well made) are my leather options.

I actually prefer the Raven Phantom. I am faster out of the holster with it, seems to impart less wear and is a great training rig.

I also run a couple Tucker Silent Thunders but use them less than I did in years past.

The Galco KING TUK will hold your full sized 1911 very well, no wait for making, priced under $60.00, and your bbl will be padded against your body all the way down.

a lot like the cross breed but less expensive and less waiting.

I highly recommend the CBST.. I hardly notice the weight of the gun at all.. that and the kydex is fine since its just a Kimber.. but if you want to spend the extra coin on the sparks.. not to mention the 3 to 6 month wait to get one...

Do you have a Raven to compare it to? I commend your efforts on pumping your own kydex and yours is very clean, but if you get one holster from them, you would be able to fine tune yours so that they work as well as RCS such as how they get their retention, more of the blending and "finishing" of the holster to make it more user friendly and adaptable to end user, and I can also tell by looking at yours that it will not ride as tight as RCS. I've been down to RCS so I know the process isnt rocket science, but it is time consuming, but im sure your product would be even better if you had one of theirs to compare it to

My buddy has a couple different holsters from rcs. As far as finish they are nicer this was only my second time making a holster. I had no intention of trying sell my hOlsters. I make my own cause it's way cheaper. But when it comes to how close it rides I didn't measure but from looks I can't see a difference.... I contour the holster so it hugs my body. as I said I wasn't planning on selling mine (although I have sold a few) I just wanted something similar to the raven but didn't want the price or wait. So I used there holster (barrowed my buddy's) and made my own. I also didn't like how they use such thin kydex.

Rcs makes a awesome product no doubt but in the limited time I have used both holsters I can't say I like one over the other. Obviously I am alittle bias but so far my buddy has said the same about his I made for him. But in all fairness I was able to hand fit my holster to myself an my gun.... I know that if I was using thinner (or made mine alittle wider for more room to contour) I could match how close mine rides to there's, but as I said when using it I can't tell a difference so for me the added rigid ness of the thicker kydex out ways having it a few 16th's closer to my boddy. I will improve the finish as I make more but being this was just for me I wasn't to worried about looks as much as function.

Yup...I was thinking about trying other leather holsters but eh, I really like my CBST and don't want to spend the extra money on holsters. I lot of people give the kydex crap, but I REALLY like the CBST. I agree that my main problem with leather is that most makers don't offer enough cant and they ride too hide. Oh well. :dunno:

I am a minimalist type guy, well that plus a big leather fan. Isn't putting kydex and a 1911 together considered sacreligious on here. :dunno:

I love the smell of gun leather :embarassed: After putting about 100 fast shots thru my 1911 then putting it in the holster for the ride home. The smell of gun powder and leather yummmm, yeah I am kinda weird but even my wife likes to give it a good sniff. How can you not like a woman who's favorite smell is gunpowder smoke.

Anyway I have a El Paso Saddlery High Slide, coupled w/ a 1.5" Horse hide in natural dye from the Beltman. I don't carry a mag holder, usually just a spare 8 rd mag in the front pocket of my AE cargo shorts or my wifes Coach purse :whistling:

I used to use a Fobus paddle holster for my Glocks (before I found my new God in the shape of a 1911 and JMB) it was HORRIBLE !! and dangerouse. The gun would lock in place but good luck on drawing it in a hurry, either it would not come out or you gave your self a wegie pulling it out so hard.

Been using a VM2 for 10 years now. Its strongest points imo are that it spreads the load well with the fore and aft loops, this also makes it slimmer than having the loops stacked on top of the gun/holster, it is stable - keeps the gun at the same place & same angle which aids consistently good draws.

I'm not sure I understand that logic. Being a bigger guy usually means the dreaded love handles. Said "handles" will tend to push a gun outward more on an OWB holster than with an IWB holster. It also typically means one is bigger around the middle than shoulders and chest, so shirts will tend to drape more around the gun. :dunno:

Rinspeed
08-11-2011, 12:06
As a general rule an OWB will always be more comfortable but also harder to conceal depending on weather/clothing.

I have a friend who is on the large side (3x) and he uses IWB holsters but wears them between his belt and jeans, rather than inside the jeans. His thinking is the IWB designs lay flatter than the OWB designs, and he never tucks a shirt in anyway.

I'm wondering what brand of ammo you were shooting?

I shot some Federal, Winchester, Speer and some brand I can't remember that I bought at the range - the range ammo smelled like second-hand smoke, only worse - the other three were OK, but none stick out in my mind as being notable.

fnfalman, are you in an open carry state or just don't care?
i'm not being a smart*****, or not trying to be.
in the early to mid 90s i went to big bend w/a gf and lots of people were open carrying. i asked the cashier and she said no one cares so everybody does.

in this thread i've seen a lot of guys carry owb and i'm thinking: are they in open carry states or just have long-tailed shirts?

thanks.

There are more than one ways to carry a gun concealed. OWB carry has been used effectively since who knows when and still does nowadays.

When I decide to pack a pistol, I wear a sport coat or some sort of lightweight jacket.

If you're uncomfortable with a mode of carry, you're not going to carry.

C5 Leather Montana, basically a VM 2 for part of the cost without the long weight. I carry commander, not full sized, but use the same carry rig year round (lots of clothes or shorts and a t)

IDPA USPSA is the Ky-Tac Super Hoopers, built by a top-class shooter for shooters. IWB for CCW is a Ky-Tac Braveheart, quite comfortable. When it's hot and I'm in shorts, I carry a PM9 in a 5 Shot Leather pocket holster which works perfectly.

I happen to like leather for CCW EDC. I found STONER HOLSTERS (Middletown Ohio) at a gun show last year and asked if they do custom holsters. They cut their own leather and Jeff told me he can cut anything I want.
His stock holster has a shield on one side to keep the upper from contacting the body. He offered it in left or right hand versions. He offered it in IWB or OWB, which means clip on one side OR the other. He also offers the option of a SS spring to hold the holster open for ease of re-holstering.
I told him that I wanted one with belt-clip holders on BOTH sides so I can carry IWB or OWB. I also wanted a shield on BOTH sides so I could carry on the hip with the grip back, or behind my right kidney with the grip forward or back. I also wanted the spring hold-open. He said hes never done one like that but was willing to do it.
I use it every day and really like it. All those options added up, it cost me $90. Jeff makes his holsters for any make/model pistol.
Im 58 and weigh about 150, I carry full size 1911s, a Compact Officer or an EMP and they all fit nicely in the one holster I have.
The pics show both clips installed on the holster, which I did for this set of pics. I normally only have one clip installed since carrying IWB, that unused clip is uncomfortable.

I grabbed this Galco at the time I bought my pistol. There are some great holsters in this thread. Thanks for sharing.
