I'm interested in buying a comp. for my first ar 15 build. I really would like a balance of recoil reduction and not much noise increase. is a battle comp the way to go here? thanks for any replies or suggestions.

Not in my opinion.
Comps or brakes that have a large internal diameter like the Battlecomp or FSC556 allow turbulant gases to get around the bullet and disrupt stability and flight.
Efficient brakes have a bore diameter close .040-.060 larger than the bullet diameter.
Any brake or comp that has large side ports most of which are square will be very loud.
So the key would be to find a brake or comp that has a small bore and smaller top and side ports.
