I have been around guns my entire life and own Glocks, Sigs, XDs, and Snubbies. Last week I went to the range with a friend and shot his Taurus 1911. Well, now I am hooked!

The local gun store has a used Colt Defender .45 for $899. It looks in great shape and I was wondering if this is a good deal.

I am wanting to use it for CCW and was originally looking for the Commander sized pistol.

Thanks,
Scott

The Defender is a wonderful little gun. If I had to get a tiny 1911 that would be it.

But the 899 used price is out of hand. That is the new price for one.

thanks for the advice!

Is there a major difference with the recoil between the 3.5" barrel and 4" barrels 1911?

The littler the gun you get...the flippier it gets. Not a big deal although.

I'd go with a full size as your first 1911.

That price seems high for a used Defender, by the way.

1911's are infamous for being very hard to make reliable when you drop below a 4-1/4" barrel. IMHO, I'd stick with a Government or Commander if you want a 1911. Going smaller, it becomes a crap shoot if you get a good one or not.
