View Full Version : If you could only have 3 guns for SHTF?
Title says it all, if you could only have three guns(guns you already own) for SHTF what would they be? I am talking Katrina type situation, lawlessness, hungry desperate people.
For me it would be(updated),
Glock 19
Ruger Mini 14 or AR15
Mossberg 590
How bout you? Thought this might make for a good thread.
I have always thought that these threads should require explanations of the choices made.
For instance, who carries three firearms, and their attendant mags and ammo? Why two poodle shooters that aren't the same?
Is the G19 trade bait or something? Yeah, it's popular, but it still sucks, rather like the Big Mac is popular and sucks.
mini 14 is slightly picky with ammo no? Replace that guy with an ak47, and the ar15 with a 12 gauge loaded with buckshot
mini 14 is slightly picky with ammo no? Replace that guy with an ak47, and the ar15 with a 12 gauge loaded with buckshot
This..................
I am talking guns to defend your family and property with, not to carry around. For me I choose the Glock 19 as a ideal pistol for this situation, I have lots of mags and ammo for it, I shoot it a lot and I am comfortable with it. Fire power of a full size handgun, small enough to conceal if need be.
Rifle, AR15. I cannot think of a better weapon the defend your property with. I have shot ARs a lot and have lots of mags and ammo for mine. Ruger Mini 14 simply as a backup to the AR, shoots the same ammo. Same firepower. Have lots of mags for it too. Its not picky with ammo, mine has never jammed over 3000 rounds.
Now lets hear your guys guns of choice.

Guns I already have
Benelli M1- Great fight stopper from close to mid range
Glock 17- My most trusted handgun(most mags and ammo too)
Suppressed MKII- You never know when you might have to be quiet

My Colt 6920, Glock 19, and the Remington 870. Pretty much covers all the bases.
Saiga 12- 20 round drum is going to pretty much annihilate anything in its path. You can load it with 00 for close range or slugs for longer range. Gives great versatility and wonderful carnage
Saiga 7.62 converted- AK reliability. Cheap ammo, cheap mags, proven workhorse.
AR-15 I have a few to chose from (6920, LMT, BCM). cheap ammo, cheap mags, good for short, mid, and long range
Since I always CCW, I'm going to have a pistol on me anyway, so I'm not going to count that. But I would resort to my G20 if I had to use it

Cz 75
AR/reflex and a .22 conversion kit.

Any trustworthy 12g shotgun or centerfire rifle. I really need to get a 6920 sometime. I never save money long enough, though. Always end up getting another handgun or handgun ammo or something first.

You did say "Katrina." I would have left days before. Why mess around with lawlessness and desperate people?
Wading around NOLA?
Rifle: Arsenal SGL-21. I think the AK in 7.62x39 is a better choice for the lone homesteader than the AR is. The 123gr round is better against cover, cars, and won't crap out if you have to butt stroke someone with it. Yes, the AK loses at ranges exceeding 250-300m, but that is not a shot I am taking in a SD posture.
Shotgun: Benelli M4. The only M4 worth a damn in my book. Ultra reliable and fast enough.
Pistol: My customized SA Champion in .45ACP. It's flawlessly reliable. It's clad in NP3 from Robar, I can wear it all day open or concealed.

Big Mac sucks? While I have not had a Big Mac in a few months, it definitely tastes great!
My SHTF guns are:
1 - either G19/26/21 (mainly because I have all three)(plentiful ammo, and dependable)/Self defense weapon
2 - Ruger 10/22 (cheap ammo, and dependable)/Hunting weapon mostly
3 - SKS (in my case, Norinco)(cheap/plentiful ammo, and dependable)/bigger game hunting, multiple shots if needed
If I'm in a shooting match with someone beyond 100 yards, I will not be happy anyway and will if at all possible, try to bug out. Shooting matches where you are being shot at it is not cool except in games.
Too easy...

The G17 because it carries alot of rounds and is an almost fool proof handgun.
Not necessarily an RRA AR15, but a good one for sure and a full size rifle. Not an M4 clone carbine. I don't anticipate doing any entries and I like that extra 4 inches of barrel.

My G19, nice high end AR (noveske, POF, ECT) then a nice Mossberg 500.
If you're gonna say "nice high end AR" then make it in an odd caliber...that way when the "Raiders" finally get you they will rejoice when they see Alexander Arms on the lower but dejoice when it says 6.5 Grendel. Cause they won't be able to find ammo it. That is if they get any of y'all and I'm rooting for all y'all to be winners! And I'm gonna have a t-shirt that says GT on it...so don't shoot me bros and sis'es...
Ar-15 rifle + sound suppressor, shotgun semi auto (saiga or benelli), and a pistol of some sort. Prolly a Glock 17 just because the ammo would be lighter. IF I could have a 4th gun I would have a ruger 10/22 because it has lots of ammo and its light. A head shot or two would change someones day

Well since there are six people in my family. All of which I trust with guns and all of which would be armed with a long gun and a handgun I really can't cut it down to just three.
But if only three guns from what I currently own it would probably be a glock 17, Mossberg 500, and an ar15.

G26, you are not going out to find food or whatever with a gun on your hip or your rifle in hand. If you are not going out your pistol does not matter because you have a rifle or shotgun.
AR in 6.5 Grendel, its what I have. If you are not walking bigger caliber makes sense because you don't have to carry the weight.
Kel-Tec Sub 2000, I can fold it and carry it in my pack while foraging. If I need more range than my pistol I can pull it out and shares magazines with my Glocks. I chose it over my pump shotgun because I can conceal it. The shotgun doesn't really give me anything the AR doesn't do as well or better.
Glock 17/19--- Shotgun--- Remington, Benelli AR15 Platform--Colt, BCM, Spikes, etc.. My 2 cents...

There was a time (70s and 80s)when my choice of handgun would have been a .357 magnum revolver mainly because of their absolute reliability and also the availability of .38spl/.357 magnum ammo. The ammo was cheap and everywhere. A Ruger Blackhawk Convertible with the additional 9m/m cylinder was a very desirable survival handgun. Nowdays, that ammo is fairly expensive and not so easy to find anymore due to the reduction of firearms produced in those revolver calibers these days.
Times change.
Rule number one have ammo! A gun without it is useless. A 357 mag is still a good choice. You are the supply system ,have it. You won,t be able to go to Walmart for more. I must admit 9mm is the way to go today as most armys have found out. It is easy to get and ,carry and store in big usefull amounts.
Holland and Holland Royal Sidelock 12 Gauge
Westley Richards in .577 nitro
Bauer .25
Sgl-20 Ak, Rem. 870, and of course the G19.
Three guns?
Best go with one rifle and some bandoleers or a load bearing vest (LBV) for ammunition.
Be sure to have a first-aid kit and some extra tourniquets. Two canteens and a camelback, you will need water. Consider a 3-day assault pack.

If I was mobile mostly on foot, then just a G26 and a Mossberg Just in Case
If I was mobile but with a vehicle, then add a suppressed AR-15 and a G19 instead of a G26.
If I'm on foot most of the time, I don't want to stand out and get people's attention with my arsenal. And if i find a place to camp out then I'll break out the mossberg

I am surprised that none of you included a bow, or slingshot. You'll need it because the ammo will run out by somehow.
For staying around the house and not moving on foot; Sig 226, Sig 516, and the Remy 870... :wavey:
If I'm on the move via foot; G34, Savage .22, and maybe the 870... I'd have to reduce the weight and the .22 would be great for gathering food... :wavey:
These, "What Ifs," are always tough to determine without knowing all the particulars. Will we be staying at our house and not leaving town? If we leave town can we drive or are we packing out? Are we going by ourselves or with others? :dunno:

For now I am going to have to be unoriginal and go with:
Glock 34

Although I am back in the woods away from everything and my back deck is high up from ground level. I could easily keep the crazies back.

If we are staying put Pistol, Rifle Shotgun. In my case that would be G19, FAL and Remington 870
If I have to be on the move I'm not going to try and carry even three weapons. I'll pare it down to a G19 and my BLR.
Using only what I've currently got, I'd go with
SIG P226
Mossberg 500
K31
If I could pick from my short list, too, I'd swap out the K31 for an SKS.

Not much of a big shocker and much like the others:
A duty caliber pistol or revolver - good backup and small enough to stash somewhere when they come a-gun-grabbin'.
A pump 12 gauge shotgun - ya gotta eat.
A semi-auto magazine fed rifle - defensive/offensive; works well enough from 3 feet* on out.
*3 feet on in is time for a Bowie knife.
I shoot all the weapons I own well enough to not really care which ones I actually had in SHTF... G19, 1911, S&W M65, AR, 870, whatever is at hand at the time.

My 870 HD 7+1, my Colt 6721 HB, and a Glock 17. My P228 would do the job or my G23 or 35, but 9mm is mouch more common to find if I need to scavenge from LE or MIL sources, as is 12 ga and 5.56. My p228 would not be as forgiving to the environment and such as a Glock would thats why I chose it.

I am talking guns to defend your family and property with, not to carry around.
This doesn't make sense.
There is no need for three if it is for carrying around.
There is no need to limit it to three if you will be at/around home.
If around the house, I am loading up whatever I have if needed, but honestly I probably would settle on a few specific items and call it quits.
If going walk about.
PM9, because it is the smallest gun that would stay with me all the time no matter what.

I do not intend to be clearing houses. Mainly I would look to be able to suppress/dissuade ill willed folks from approaching me and mine, and putting squirrels and maybe even a small white tailed deer in the pot from time to time. If in a true SHTF situation I won't be worried about the game warden citing me for using an AR on deer, and I know full well that it will work with proper shot placement.
I really think if it came to it I would batten down the hatches and try and get by on what I have stored. If roving gangs showed up, well I would sit it out and let them pass, or if it came to it, add them to the menu.

Glock 19 - For back-up.
In the burbs of a major city, my SHTF scenario would likely include evac/bug-out on two wheels/feet as roads will be gridlocked. In the earlier stages of SHTF, I'm guessing that there will be some semblance of law/order before resources dry up, during which time toting a long-gun wouldn't look too good. So for me....
- G19
- Kel-tec Sub 2000 (with 15 & 33 rnd glock mags for both)
- .22 cal target pistol/revolver
Kind of surprised there're not that many votes for .22 cals. I like the fact that you can carry 3-5 times the amount of rounds vs any centerfire (saving those for SD), and that it is an ideal round for small game.

It's kind of hard to pack three unless two are handguns.

Katrina like situation was the given. My assumption was stay home, people looting and scrounging, personal safety is questionable. I have a few months of food on hand. Worst case is drive out, but that was not a problem.

PS90 rifle, 5.7 pistol, and Rem 1100. Lots of 50 rd mags for the rifle, 30 rd mags for the pistol and an 8 rd extension for the shotgun. I can carry a lot of 50 rd FNH mags loaded with 5.7 ammo!!!
Glock G26, my personal defense choice.
Springfield Armory XD9SC, wife's personal defense choice. If this is just for me then replace the XD9SC with a .22 lr pistol (Ruger Mark II).
Keltec Sub 2000 (9mm Glock). Longer range concealed carry (backpack).
In a Katrina situation, pistols are king (since visible long arms are going to be seized or get you shot). A carbine in a back pack makes a nice backup in case a serious situation flares up.

Any glock, but preferably a 17 or a 19/23
AK 47
Remington 870
The glock is something to conceal if I need to venture out and want to lay low. The AK and the 870 will both do for hunting and self defense. All three of these are ultra reliable, low maintenance, and simple enough that I can break them down without the help of a gunsmith.

Ak or Ar, 870, Glock 17....and a ***** ton of ammo for each!!!
Question: Most people seem to be listing two long guns, specifically a rifle and a shotgun.
How would you determine which one to have in your hands/use? I guess you are thinking about this from an 'inside or around your home' approach as you won't be walking with two long guns and you can't (personally...) use a long gun effectively while driving...so I don't really get it. How would it work?

1. Sako M75 .300 Winchester Magnum for harvesting heavy games and long distance blasting.

3. Ruger Blackhawk Convertible .45ACP/.45LC - I can find either ACP or Long Colt practically anywhere and everywhere.

That would pretty much say it all.
The G17 because it carries alot of rounds and is an almost fool proof handgun.
Not necessarily an RRA AR15, but a good one for sure and a full size rifle. Not an M4 clone carbine. I don't anticipate doing any entries and I like that extra 4 inches of barrel.
Nothing is more personal than a good 870 Remington 12 gauge.

If truly a NOLA "Katrina" situation, then you'd be better off with three identical concealable pistols.
Cause if the National Guard or restrictive out-of-State Highway Patrol sees them, they'll confiscate them.
Therefore, no show, and plan on loosing two and still be capable of using your primary ammo stash.
And don't forget the night vision. Looters love the darkness and there is no electricity.
I would not carry 3 guns around, SHTF or not. Only one, most versatile would do.
A good option is to buy three rifles. Pass two rifles out to your buddies and you got a force multiplier.

Not necessarily what I would carry walking or driving around, but a shotgun doesn't take up much room on the side of my pack or the back of my truck. Situation dependent the extra weight and weapons would likely be unreasonable as you said. I carry around an M4 and Pistol with plenty of other weight, but if I am on the move the shotgun would be the first thing to leave behind due to the lack of range and size/weight of ammo. No real specific situation was mentioned so a general answer was called for imho.
Pistol while driving rifle otherwise would be the obvious answer to that last question. If we are talking what three guns while driving in a vehicle; G26, G34, M&P15T.

You specified a 'Katrina" type situation, so that means an urban/suburban environment and a short duration (weeks to maybe a couple months....but not years). You change the location (rural or wilderness) and/or the duration (months to years, instead of just weeks), and the list of firearms and the calibers would naturally change as well:
M4
G26 or 27 (could live with a 19 or 23)
M&P340 in my pocket (always with me anyway, no mater when or where!)
Notice that I put a high priority on lightweight mobility and firepower for the rifle (thus the M4), and concealability for the handguns. There will be times when you will want the deterent effect of being very visibly armed (like facing a mob), and others when you want to be concealed and look unthreatening (like when dealing with the National Guard). If you are just defending your home almost anything will do, but what happens when you home is destroyed (burned out by pissed-off looters)? You need light weapons that are highly mobile, just in case you can't stay home.
Shotguns are superb weapons within their practical range, but in this case the gun itself and the ammunition are just to heavy when you have to be mobile. I am a .40 fan, but in a SHTF case a 9 mm might make more sense because you can carry more rounds for the weight, and the handguns have a larger capacity. Add in the .38/.357 of the M&P340, and the possibility of finding some compatible ammo increases.

Katrina SHTF arsenal rules to remember
1. Do not draw attention to yourself. Don't go walking the streets looking like Judge Dread, or some kind of mall ninja.
2. Common ammo works better. If it were a SHTF disater your not going to find a large supply (if any at all) of 10mm, .357 SIG, .41 or .44 mag.

Fortunately for me the wife and kids like/know how to shoot so it would be fairly simple for me.
I'd have my:
Norinco M1A
Mini Draco
G29 (with my .40 barrel in case I needed to change)
Wife would have her:
Mossberg 500
AR15
G27 (with her 9mm Barrel and mags in case)
Would throw my oldest my Mini-14 (his favorite)
Youngest would want the Saiga 12 (his favorite)
Stand tall if it was something short term. If it was Long term Bro and dad would come with the horses and we'd bug out to their place. Brother would be packing his Saiga 12, AR-15 (M4 style) and G29, Pops would probably be packing his .45 AR, .45 1911, and his remington 870. Not even getting into the cousins/friends that all know where to go. Ya we got the Burt/Heather Gummer thing going on in my neck of the woods.

Glock 19/26 (if things are that bad you really should be carrying two concealed guns and the 19/26 are a great "family") + AR15. This is assuming one person. If multiple people could only have 3 (why 3 anyway?) then maybe another long gun instead of the 26. Depends on exact scenarios though.

I am talking guns to defend your family and property with, not to carry around.
...Rifle, AR15. I cannot think of a better weapon the defend your property with.
3 ARs. One for me, two for the family/friends.
Common ammo works better.
It was certainly a sensible theory. Reality though is that common ammo disappears first as it is in the higher demand. Seem to remember but a couple of years ago you could not find any 9,45,223 etc. in a local Wal-Mart or anywhere for that matter but .357 Sig and .44Mag NEVER disappeared from the shelves. Made me buy .357 Sig barrel for G20.
I think the subject of ammunition supply is moot in this type of situation. Situation is relatively short-lived and all you need a gun for is to ward off looters most of whom will not be armed. Most folks will be dead or in custody if they will need to engage in type of shooting(s) that will drain the amount of ammo they already have on hands.
Rifle- AR-15 K.I.S.S. principle sling and light

I've owned quite a few different "assault" rifles over the years and I could be happy with either an AKM (stamped frame version of the forged receiver AK-47) or an AR and I've have to have a decent pump shotgun of one kind or another.

Something that needs to be understood, for the most part long guns would only be able to be used inside your home from a position of cover, if you were caught on the streets with one the National Guard or Law Enforcement would confiscate it. If you were out and about a handgun that could be concealed would be a much better option.
Also, for the most part you want to remain as quite and inconspicuous as possible. That means if someone were lurking around your house with bad intent you'd be better off taking them out with a crossbow/compound bow then using a firearm since the report from the shot would draw a lot of unwanted attention to your AO, from both LEO's and or criminal types looking to score a firearm for their own use.
One nice thing about living in a small community like I do here in Crossville is that for the most part we'd all ban together to help each other out rather then try to steal and harm each other. In a Big City all bets are off though.

My POF P415 AR (5.56) 1/8 barrel, Mossberg 500 Cruiser (ATI adjustable stock and 6 shell side saddle) and Kimber Warrior.
In a Katrina situation, discretion and staying under the radar is going to be very important. In addition you will need something serious in reserve to deal with a home invasion.
G26 for everyday concealed carry.
Shotgun for home defense. I like my 1100 so that is what I would probably use, but any decent pump would do just as well.
Suppressed .22LR in case I need to eliminate a problem animal (abandoned dogs) or shoot for the pot without attracting undue attention to myself.
- Edit - I already posted earlier in this thread, decided a suppressed 22 was more important than a concealable pistol caliber carbine.
Guns I already have
Benelli M1- Great fight stopper from close to mid range
Glock 17- My most trusted handgun(most mags and ammo too)
Suppressed MKII- You never know when you might have to be quiet
We think a-like. I would go for the more compact G26 for ease of concealment, but a G17 is a great choice.

I'd take a 870, a mini gun, and an repr that can take a 37mm cannon under it or whatever the right size cannon it could be 40mm for all I know
3 shotguns
I won't be defending my family against people far away. If they are far enough away so a shotgun is ineffective, then I don't need to be shooting at them because they are not a threat
Poor logic.
They might be shooting at you, at a longer distance than you can engage them at.
If I really had to go right now, I'd grab an AR, Benelli M2, and a 10/22
funny though, I have an AK and a glock and an 870 really close by. I wonder what than means?
I'm having lots of kids to carry my guns and ammo for when the SHTF. The only problem is they keep eating into my ammo budget...
Call me crazy but a true SHTF I'll take my two 5.7 pistols and my PS90. I have 3,000 rounds of the good ammo (SS192_ packed away for them. My 2nd choice 1.Sig 228 (older 90's gun) 2. SCAR .223 3. MK-760 full auto. I have all the listed firearms.

I would think if the excrement hit the fan blades I think the 3 guns you would choose to have handy are the ones you already own. I don't think your LGS will be open for business during a Katrina type of event....
I'm certainly not walking around in public with a shoulder arm...

The correct answer is:
Beretta 92fs
Ruger Mini-14
Rem 870 12ga
With these guns you are have tested and proven winners. I would trust my life to these over Glock, SIG, ARs, AKs or a semi-auto shotgun.

There are no "correct" answers, just what each person decides.
Oh, and GLOCKs, SIGs, ARs, AKs and semi-auto shotguns have proven themselves time and time again, and are proven winners.

I agree with you on the 870, I guess 1 out of 3 will do.

.357 Magnum (Pick your maker) because you could shoot .38 or .357
Marlin lever gun in .357 (same ammo as above)
12 gauge shotgun

Beretta 92fs
Ruger Mini-14
Rem 870 12ga

WOW! Mini-14 over AR or AK. Please let me know what countries are arming their forces with Mini-14s. "Yah them AR and AK rifles are just flash in the pan fads. "Wait till people get a chance to see that Mini-14, they will just pitch them obsolete and unreliable ARs and AKs in the trash."
Get out much? :poke:
Beretta 92fs, OK not a bad choice. Reliable? Check. Only problem is 33 oz is pretty heavy for every day concealed carry. Going to carry that in an IWB holster tucked under your shirt are you? Let me know how that works out for you.
870, fine choice. Not only valid choice, but nothing wrong with it.

S&W 686 plus P 357 magnum 7 round 357 magnum.6 inch barrel.Stainless steel.professional trigger job --this pistol can fire 38 Special, 38 Plus and of course the mighty .357 Magnum; Mossberg 930 spx 8 round 12ga (9 ghost loaded)
S&W M&P15-TS permanently attached Vortex flash hider to the M&P15 TS’s 14″ barrel allows the S&W M&P15-TS to remain a true 16in barrelled weapon. Smith & Wesson’s new TS version of their popular M&P15 is, in a way, an SBR but is not subject to these restrictions. Why? The new TS has an overall barrel length of 16 inches, but that includes the flash hider. Conventional AR-style carbines with a 16-inch barrel and a flash hider in actuality have an 18-inch barrel because the flash hider adds an inch or so to the overall barrel length.
I was in a Kartina-esqe natural disaster. It taught me a lot. Truthfully, the guns that were useful were a nail gun, a screw gun, and a 20 cal pellet air rifle. I can put up a livable structure in hours, a long term living situation in a few days. I since have picked up a 4x4, F350 diesel and a camper.
I have the 9mm Glocks including the 22cal conversion, the 22lr 10/22, and am looking at an 1100 with two barrels, rifled and smooth bore. I don't see why an 870 is better, but nearly every reply says to have one.
After a little more thought I think I would choose 1.MAK-90 (converted to pistol grip legally) 2. Ruger Scout rifle .308 3.Glock 27.

I joined in on a similar discussion on AR15.com a little while back, though in that case it was 5 guns, not three. Of the choices of guns I already have:
1) Colt LE6920 w/ TA47-2 Compact ACOG
2) Savage MK II FV-SR with Suppressor and Nikon 3-9x BDC Rimfire Prostaff
3) Glock 17 RTF2 w/ Night Sights and Tactical Light
FWIW, those were my choices on AR15.com also, but since it was 5 there, my additional two choices were:
4) Springfield M1 Garand w/ Ultimak Rail (Aimpoint & Scout Scope in Bobro QD Mounts)
5) Ruger SP101 2 1/4" DAO .357 Magnum
Why?
The LE6920 is a fantastic rifle with lots of spare parts, magazines, accessories, and ammunition available. Its accurate and reliable, and can be used against multiple targets quickly and accurately, especially with a compact ACOG mounted on the carry handle. Also allows completely unobstructed access to iron sights without any need to "deploy" them.
The Savage because it is a .22 LR, so ammunition is more available than anywhere else. It has a threaded barrel for suppressor use, its accurate, and in the event the magazine(s) go missing it can be used as a single shot. It is a bolt gun, so worse comes to worse, it can also be used with .22 Short or Long in addition to LR, and no worries about cycle reliability with any ammunition. Plus, even unsuppressed .22 rifles are reasonably quiet and great for small game hunting.
The Glock 17 RTF2 because it is simply, reliable, I have lots of spare parts, ammunition is easy to find and cheap to stock up on, magazines are available and reasonably priced, and having a handgun that can be concealed could be a priority.
So those are my top three.
The Garand is super reliable, has a further effective range than the 5.56mm, and clips are much cheaper to purchase than various battle rifle magazines and can be kept loaded indefinately without any issues. With the adjustable gas plug the Garand can use any .30-06 ammunition one happens to find around, and what store that sells ammo doesn't have at least a box or two of .30-06? With an Ultimak rail and QD mounts for a red dot and scope it can be used at close to long range quite effectively, and is great for hunting larger game. A properly loaded .30-06 can kill pretty much anything in North America.
The SP101 because its compact, easy to conceal, super reliable, and can use either .38 Special or .357 Magnum ammunition, both of which are quite common. Plus, no magazines to worry about stocking up on or finding, and even the short barreled gun could kill up to deer sized game if necessary.
One will notice that I am lacking a shotgun. As useful as they are, shotguns are just not my "thing". If there was a #6 on my list, it would probably be an 870 though.

Well This topic is always fun, but I tend to get a lot of crap for my choice. For the easy one, a good sidearm that you can trust and if need be conceal. I have 2 glock 19's and 2 dozen mags and 1500 rounds of ammo within 20 feet of me, so that would be my first pick. My second pick would be a good reliable and accurate .22lr rifle. Why? well I can hit accurately to 100yards no problem and 200 with patience. Ammo also. I have currently 6-7k rounds for the gun. I also can carry 2-3k rounds in addition to any other survival equipment I could need on my person. Try carrying 2k rounds of 5.56 more than a mile and see how you feel. .22 can be used for hunting easily on small and medium game no problem. It is far from ideal for something the size of a deer but in a pinch it would work. As for 2 legged targets? well if I am hitting something up close, I have more problems than my caliber choice plus a sidearm with hollow point ammunition. at 50-150yds, i doubt that my target would say, "oh its only a .22. Im ok it didn't hurt that bad" It would do the job just fine. I would use my somewhat modified and VERY reliable ruger 10-22 for this role. for the third gun, well I wouldn't really need one. I feel all bases would be covered with the above. If I get to choose something anyway, well i would take a long range bolt gun. 30-06 or 308 or something like that with a few hundred rounds of ammo. If i am shooting 2 legged targets at long range then I am not in a self defense situation but for taking larger game this would be good. If you take down a 200lb deer or 600+ lb moose/bear you can feed a family for half a year if accompanied by other items and properly preserved. So to summarize,
1. sidearm - glock 19
2. .22lr rifle - ruger 10-22... more specifically MY ruger 10-22
3. medium to long range bolt gun - any reliable accurate 308 or 30-06 or similar gun.
As said before 3 is not necessary to me but would be nice to have. I don't feel i need an AR or AK but many think i am horribly wrong for saying this. With the .22 if I were to use one round a day to either hunt small game or defend myself on a daily basis, what I have in the room with me right now would last me almost 20 years. I'll take that over 300 rds of 5.56 and an AR any day.
A more practical 3rd choice would be a second .22lr rifle as a backup to the first as it is the most important in the above situations.

Easy, in-house. two 12 gauge shotguns and my Colt 6920 with Aimpoint H1 and 3X magnifier.
Leaving home, 6920 in a pack. My 30 concealed on me, the 27 on my wife.
Gotta have hands free for me and my boys to carry our compound bows and crossbow, good game getters. I really like the fact I can shoot an arrow more than once (well, most of the time anyway, the very reason the 8 year old shoots a crossbow!). I understand why some would like a good .22 here but I want to hunt with something even quieter. If I am leaving the house I'm heading deeper into the woods. If you want to kill me you'll have to find me first.:wavey:
Oh, and a couple of really sharp knives.

As much as I love My Kimber desert warrior for the pistol I would go with a Glock 21 with 9mm,40, and 357sig drop in conversion barrels on hand, ak47, and.... last would have to be would have to be my Remington 700 to reach out and touch, I wouldn't go with the a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 for the fact that I can do the close quarter work just as well with an ak or pistol even though if you said four shtf guns one of those would be it for sure!!!!

Seems to me that if your "go to" carbine is an AK or AR, that there's more logic in choosing an abbreviated version of same as opposed to a pistol. This way you have commonality of both ammo and mags. As an example....the Draco would be the perfect backup to the AK carbine and simply offers more than any typical auto pistol, IMO.
For me it's
AK,47(7.62x39

given my line of work, id go to the arms room and pick up my MK48, G19, and a SCAR-H along with ample rounds and go to work. Or I'm sure I would be deployed to a different country where all them crazy people wouldnt be bothering me. But if i was home and not in my chosen profession or the other im going into, i would have to go with my G30sf (3-4 G21 mags, then use Kriss mags if needed), Kriss Super V (with extended mags), and KSG (probably more slugs than shot).

Marlin 336cs 30/30 Lever Action- Never had any animal take a step after putting a round in it with this gun (I imagine it would work well for 2 legged variety out to 100 yards-my personal comfort zone with this one), tons of ammo and can take a beating
Mossberg 500 12ga.- For maximum carnage and reliability(have 2 barrels and tons of ammo and feild time to go with either.

If you don't like black rifles, the Marlin 30-30 is one of the best choices as a main SHTF rifle. I like mine, however if your getting in a gunfight with someone who has a semi-auto rifle you will be out gunned with anything but a semi-auto rifle.

S&W model 28 .357...accurate, reliable, ammo is fairly common and available (.357 and 38 spl can be found on just about any Mom and Pop shelf in America)
AR 15...again, accurate, reliable, and 5.56 and .223 is reasonably available. Provides for longer range defense and putting larger game on the table if the situation called for it.
870 12 gauge...great for home defense, ammunition is in great abundance in as many forms as there are situations for its' use, and the same for its' use as a hunting tool, you can take the smallest birds or the largest predators by simply choosing the appropriate ammo.

Why 2 rifles about the same size/weight and caliber?
I'd probably go more like AR-15, Remington 870 and Glock 17.
Making it easy as there are wayyyy too many brand preferences...
12 gauge pump action shotgun...would be used (primarily) for hunting so no real need for an 18-20 inch riot tube. Screw in choke tubes a plus but not a requirement.
A quality cenerfire handgun (revolver or semiauto) for self defense.
Centerfire semiauto rifle...caliber not that important as long as you have enough ammo.
Tacticool? No. Useful? Very.
