View Full Version : Are You Allowed A Beard?

Just curious...any LEO's here allowed allowed to wear a beard?

When I was in my teens KPD allowed officers to wear a beard if it was trimmed and clean...They don't anymore and the only LEO's I ever see with beards are some of the alphabet agencies.

Thanks!

Beards are OK as long as they are not grown on duty and it is kept trimmed.

I am with one of the alphabet agencies, (BOP), and yes we're allowed a beard, even if it is long. However, supervisory staff usually have to be clean shaven for the most part, with the exception of a small amount of beard growth. I could actually get by with an orthodox beard if I wanted to, (think Hassidic, orthodox Jewish), complete with ear locks, and uncut corners.

Can't say I know of any that allow anything other than an issued stache. Although most agencies are not likely to have to use gas masks, a beard would interfere with a good seal.

You would be surprised what you can stick in a gas mask, lol.

Not for uniformed patrol, a mustache is all you can do. No beards or goatees. One of the narcs grew a goatee and the admin went back and forth on that one, it's certainly never going to fly for patrol.

mustache only for my agency. One day I might take enough to vacation to grow one. It has always been a running gag with the guys that anyone coming back from a long vacation (2-4) weeks must come back with a full blown mustache and rock it for atleast the first week back.

needless to say it is very clear that some people are born to wear a mustache, and some aren't.

The only facial hair allowed in my department is a mustache and not a single officer has one. I can't think of a PD in my county that permits anything beyond a 'stache.

The county below us, however has many officers with goatees.

I, personally, am not at all a fan the goatee-in-uniform look. I'd rather see a uniformed officer with a full sleeve tattoo then one with a goat. :whistling:

Drug guys, of course, should do whatever they need to in order to blend-in.

I have to agree. I've seen a few guys on Cops with goatee and beards in uniforms. I think it just plain looks weird.

I can't think of any departments in WV that allow a beard for patrol, although there might be a small PD here or there that does. I'm not sure that mustaches were even allowed with my last agency.(never seen one) It was very para-military and only the brass had long (by that I mean long enough to comb/part) hair.

Every place I've ever worked, no beard was allowed, but my last department would allow you to have a beard if you had a medical reason that you couldn't shave. One of our officers had been in a wreck on his previous department and caught a ton of glass in his face, and was self conscious about it. He was the only non-medical exception.

Personally, I think beards or goatees in uniform look unprofessional, but it's not my call, so... :dunno:

I don't get the whole goatee thing...its full beard for me or nothing.I don't get the beards that are outlined down the jawbone either. Then again I'm not in LE and I do understand policy but I never got why most agencies don't allow beards...I've had a beard since I got out of the Army in 1986,I think nobody would recognize me if I shaved it off.

Also I know 5 local LEO's who have retired and everyone of them has grown a full beard or goatee...Rebellion?

I've been wearing a full beard for almost 2 years now (patrol included) and a goatee for 6 years before that. I've never had an issue with a failed seal on any gas mask. I don't mind them for patrol, but they do bother me for dress uniform reasons. So when I have dressed for things such as LODD funeral I have shaved it off.

No Sir...that's not the way I roll.

Seriously though, when I was in the Army I had to shave morning and at noon.I got several warnings about shaving. They didn't believe I could have that much stubble at noon if I shaved in the morning. Not long after Top had the BC write a profile for me that my beard did in fact grow that fast and I didn't have to dry shave if ordered to.
When I got out I just grew a beard, easier than shaving two or three times a day.Had one ever since.

Every time I go on vacation I grow a beard. I love it. I absolutely hate shaving. Someday when I retire, I'll throw away my razor and only have a beard trimmer that I use occasionally.

But I can't stand long sideburns, goatees, or beards in uniform. I think it looks horrible. I occasionally grow out a mustache just to do it, but I'm clean shaven 99% of the time.

Full beard or goatee allowed. Mustache as well. Must be well groomed. Sideburns no lower than the bottom of the ear.

Huh? How can you have a beard, but have sideburns no longer than the bottom of the ear? In order to have a beard your sideburns are going to be quite a bit longer than the bottom of the ear. In fact they'll go all the way to the bottom of the jaw line, and then all the way down to the chin.

No beards unless your in our street crimes unit or task force. We can have a mustache, which we are approaching out annual mustache week. A trophy is awarded at the end of the week for the best stache. Some guys look like complete tools or porn stars.

Same for me. Plain clothes state agency with very relaxed grooming standards to better blend in.

No beards, except certain specialized divisions. Throw me in with the group that says goatees look weird in uniform. I don't think that style of beard was ever meant to be a formal look (although I can't say I'm all that familiar with its historical origins), so throwing it in with the obvious formality of a police uniform just doesn't match up.

Not permitted or forbidden by policy, which means that you can do it, but it will piss the chief off. Sometimes that's all the more reason to do it, I guess. It used to be forbidden (stache only) but we hired a couple of reserves that had had facial hair for a long time and we couldn't justify forcing them to shave it for the one day a week they would work.

I took about three weeks off over last Christmas and grew a beard for the first time in my life...just shaved it last week. I absolutely despise shaving and have to admit that I miss the beard. I'll need another three weeks off to grow a replacement though, because it does not grow fast and it does not grow thick, so it looks awful for about ten days in the middle of the process there.

I don't mind a beard on a uniformed officer as long as it is neat and trimmed, and not overly stylized.

I have been growing the full beard since beginning of vacation, and now I am back at work with it. But, I am tempted to go back to the goatee.

Count me in with the group that looks toolish with a beard. When I got my leg broke back in 04, I was off for 6 months, and decided to grow a beard, for S&Gs. Blonde hair, with gaps. My girlfriend at the time said I looked like I had the mange! Probably shouldn't have proposed to her... Oh well!

Looks retarded. No uniformed cop should be wearing a beard or goatee. Unless you've got some sort of medical condition where you can't shave, you shouldn't be allowed to have facial hair except for maybe a neatly trimmed mustache, and one that can't be used as a handle by a bad guy...

Necropost, I know. I'm allowed a full beard by policy (up to two inches in length...) and I wear one, by God. I don't care whether it looks weird in uniform. My experience is that it's only other cops that care and, well, I'm not trying to exhibit a command presence on you guys! I even rocked the burnsides for about a week, but that was too weird even for me.

Our department started allowing goatees, so all the old dogs wanted to excercise their new right... lots of guys have one. One of the detectives that comes to the jail randomly has the most epic, heroic beard I've ever seen. My blond, baby smooth face feels quite inadequate...

If I grow a long beard, part my hair just below the ear and comb it over to cover my bald spot, does that count as a medical reason?

When I was in, no. Now, they allow goatees and the guys I have seen wearing them look like crap. Some guys can do facial hair and some can't. The guys adopting the goatee can't seem to grow facial hair and it looks like they have mange.

Hack, just for clarification, the Hasidim are not one sect of Judaism and are separate from the orthodox. There are thirty sects within Hasidic Judaism and not all of them wear payot/peyos/peyes [the untrimmed sideburns] and not all Jewish men with them are Hasidim. All male Hasidim of the appropriate age do have beards.

When I retired, I went with a beard. I let the thing grow for two years. When playing Bass in gigs, people thought I was trying to emulate Dusty Hill. I eventually got rid of it because it's too darn hot to wear a beard in an AZ summer.

We can have staches in patrol and if we donate to the Special Olympics fundraiser we are allowed to have a neatly trimmed goatee for about half the year. I usually run clean because my facial hair is "Joe Dirt"-esque but I did wear a mustache for about a year straight. Finally got tired of hairs going up my nose so I shaved. It is MoVember though, so it may come back :)

I tell all my bodily functions to cease while working a 10 to 12 hour day, because I am not entitled to have any sense of humanity. I am merely an automaton of the state durring those designated hours. It is quite shocking after getting into my POV when I get hungry, expell waste on myself, and watch my hair and fingernails grow.:rofl:
