View Full Version : 5.8 Magnitude Earthquake hits DC / VA
The news is still breaking.....The aftershocks are being felt in the NJ / NYC area......
I felt a aftershock right in the middle of PA.
Directly from the US Geological Survey website concerning earthquakes.
I'm in Hampton Roads Virginia and felt it. It lasted about 10 seconds and shook my house. No damage. My son slept through it.
We were on the road when it hit. Got home and a few things were off shelves in the garage, lost an antique vase inside, pictures on the wall were askew.
911 service is out in Charlottesville and Albermarle County, 30-miles from the quake's center. We're a few miles closer.
We felt it in southern Jersey Russ.
Felt it at NC/SC border
We felt it in southern Jersey Russ.
It was hit or miss in Northern NJ. Some felt nothing, while others got knocked off their toilet bowls (don't ask)....
western Pa felt it!
I didn't notice it, but my fiancee, a surgical tech, was in the process of delivering twins at the time and said the OR shook enough that the instruments on the mayo were moving around. There was less than a mile between us at the time. Strange that she felt it and I didn't.
It was felt in Pikeville KY, the courthouse was evac and there are cracks in the building.
I was about 30 miles from epicenter. House shook pretty good.
We had three of them in Colorado as well.

We just had an after shock . It is still going. 20 seconds +.
I am off tonight, but when I report for graveyards tomorrow I will make sure and talk with my partner in the other unit in our small town to be as prepare as possible. If there ar earthquakes in CO, and DC area, then the New Madrid can get stirred up and affect me in northeast Arkansas. Will make sure our supplies are up to speed, and will gas up a pair of gas jugs tomorrow if all is quiet tonight. More the better. You just never know...
Seismologists are now saying that the earthquake was not a result of tectonic activity along the eastern seaboard plate, but rather caused by our founding-fathers rolling over in their graves.
Seismologists are now saying that the earthquake was not a result of tectonic activity along the eastern seaboard plate, but rather caused by our founding-fathers rolling over in their graves.Well, living in Mr. Jefferson's neighborhood, I can believe that!!
Russ, the wife and I somehow missed the aftershock. No comment on what was happening....
Grew up in California.
Wake me when it gets to a 6.3 or better. :)
I called my son (he's 17) in Chapel Hill just after it happened. I didn't know about it. He thought it was pretty weird. He heard the washer jumping around and then noticed the whole house was moving.
Link to photo's of damage from an earlier quake in DC.
The fault where the quake hit has been identified by the White House as the Bush fault.
Steve in PA
I was on the throne before jumping in the shower and I felt the house shake. I was waiting to hear a "boom" because I thought a building blew up, but then I saw the water bottle on the sink shaking and the house shook for about 10 seconds. I figured we just had an earthquake.
I walked down the hall to my reloading room and turned on my scanner. The zones were going crazy from all the calls. My wife is from California and said a 5.8 barely makes the news! LOL!
I could feel it in Dearborn, MI, had 2 separate quakes, first one was pretty subtle, the next a few minutes later was stronger. People standing didn't seem to notice it at the office, but if you were sitting down, or otherwise in contact with the building/desk/etc, you could feel it shaking horizontally.
Texted the wife to see if she felt it, but she didn't. But women always lie and say they didn't feel the earth move...
i was in my car at work stopped at an intersection right next to the police station and the car started bouncing up and down. i looked back because i thought someone was messing with me by pressing on the trunk, but no one was there. then i get a text message from my girlfriend immediately after the shaking finished: "did you feel that too? what was that?" and i replied, "yeah, wtf?" (our first earthquake haha)
then all the locals came out of the housing projects and were hootin' and hollerin' about an earthquake. got about a thousand calls for "building collapses" and when we drove by, i never saw more than two or three loose bricks that had fallen off of vacant houses' roof ledges. everyone is so melodramatic here.

PRICELESS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
