Hello all. I am in the market for a black rifle and looked at both of these. With the exceptions of markings, both appeared to be identical. Both had a 16" barrel, collaspible buttstock, and removable carrying handle with a rail up top for mounting optics. Price wise, they were worlds apart. The Colt was going for $1500. The Spike's was $900. I've heard that the Colt is as close to milspec as you can get in the civilian market and has good quality. Looking at the specs on Spike's website makes me think the same is true for the ST-15, but honestly, I'm having trouble wrapping my head around alot of the technical jargon they used. My question is, "Is the Colt that much better? Or would I just be paying for the Colt brand?"

First off I think I'd look around for someone else selling a 6920. $1500 seems quite high. I've seen posts from guys finding them for close to $500 less than the number you listed.

Either choice is fine but the Colt will always hold its value (unless you modify the rifle with a bunch of crap) to most AR aficionados. Spikes is a hot brand today but who knows what tomorrow will hold for them. I have a weak spot for pretty much any Colt product as long as it is stock or the previous owner saved all the stock parts.

First of all, "Bud's Gun shop" is currently selling LE6920's for $1100.00, and LE6940's for just $1299.00! I wouldn't even consider a Spike's carbine, way way to much mall ninja appeal.

I own 2 Spike's Tactical rifles, a 16" midlength carbine, and a lightweight carbine. The quality is VERY nice, and I think they're the best value on the market. That being said, I'd get a Colt 6920. They can be had all over for around $1000 now. Whenever prices spike (sorry, couldn't resist) Colts are the most in demand.
Good luck,
Brad

Have had a Colt A2 on long-term borrow and loved shooting it, but eventually had to give it back to the owner - we had exchanged rifles for a while.

I bought a Spike's mid-length not long ago and am very pleased with it. The pony rollmark is nice, but for my money, I'd go with Spike's. Keep in mind my opinion is based on limited experience with AR's and I do not claim to be an expert.

Trust me when I say I'm a big time Spike's fan (three rifle's).
I would get the Colt. It's an investment. You can't lose in the long run.

just picked up a spikes on Monday and i love it. That said, if the Colt was equal in price, i would have bought that. Seems to be the standard against which all others are judged.

LE6920 is going for $1199 with free shipping. Better than the gun store's price.

Lots of Colt fans, I see. I'll try looking at some other local gun stores, too. This is the only one I've been to where I've priced AR's.

I bought a 6920 yesterday and paid $975. It's an awesome rifle and i am glad i chose to go with colt. Just handling the rifle you can tell it is well made...

If the price were equal I'd buy the colt simply for the resale value. Otherwise I wouldn't give over $50 more just to have a colt.

I think that it is one hell of a deal for all that you get. Chrome BCG, tactical carry handle, flip up front site, two stage trigger, sweet looking muzzle brake, etc......

Thanks! Will do! I pick it up Wednesday and I can't wait. I lightly molested the one my LGS had on display, and it just felt like a nice quality piece. For all that you get, it just seemed like a no brainer.

The Colt - no question. Comparison shop. $1100 or thereabouts seems to be the going price.

So far, a lot of fanboys and absolutely zero real information. What makes the Colt any different or better than Spike's?

DieselNut
08-30-2011, 09:16
Take the difference in cost and buy some accessories for your Spike's. That's my recommendation. They're both on equal ground, so why not get the most you can with your budget?

Colt's are under a grand as well and the internal components are A LOT better.

Pick up a RRA LPK, and a colt LPK and you can see the differences.
That said, I think the RRA's are great rifles, and I'd rather shoot one in a match, but if I had to go to some place hostile, I'll take the colt. I have a RRA and it is the most accurate of all my ARs. I really like the RRA 2 stage trigger as well.

I have some spikes stuff. It is decent, and I think either is a good choice, but I'd agree that if all were equal I'd get a colt.

All not being equal, I'm a Daniel Defense fan.

The rollmark, otherwise same gun.

Get the Colt.

No. Perhaps someone would actually tell us what the difference is instead of just saying "Colt is better" over and over again with no info to back it up.

The RRA will have an out of spec (too tight) chamber, and 4140 barrel steel in lieu of the proper 4150 milspec stuff. I would be willing to bet their gee whiz bang fold down front sight doesn't have taper pins, either. Plus, I'd also bet it's overgassed. Is the bolt HP/MPI? Does it go through the same QA/QC as either Colt or Spike's? I am also not impressed with the quality of the rails and such that particular model of RRA is offered with.

$1500 for a Colt 6920 is a complete rip off. As is $900 for a Spike's.

You should pay $1000 or so for the Colt and $800, tops for the Spike's.

After that, I believe the Colt and the Spike's is a wash, except for resale value. And your Colt probably nudges out the Spike's, as it's resale value will be at least $200 more.

In my opinion, the Colts are currently underpriced, the Spike's are priced about right and the RRAs are overpriced.

Why does Colt have large and small pin receivers? I'm gonna start my own thread.
