I have a Remington 870 magnum special purpose with a 26 inch rem-choke barrel. I want to be able to convert it between a fighting shotgun and a capable hunting shotgun. I know an 18.5 inch barrel is a must but which one? Is the mossberg 870 18.5 barrel ok or is it best to stick with a rem barrel? Is a mag extension legal to hunt with as long as there is a plug limiting rounds installed?

I would sick with the remington barrel but thats just me. I believe as long as you have a plug in the gun to limit the number of shells you should be alright.

You should have two 870's. One for hunting, one for defense. A new barrel could cost you $150 but you could buy an entire 870 Police for $250 or so.

Yeah, for the cost of a new barrel and the hassle of switching things between guns I'd just buy a used 870 police trade in for HD and keep the field gun for hunting.

It depends on what you hunt but Federal Migratory birds require a plug that allows no more than two shells in the magazine and one in the chamber total. So for ducks, geese, doves etc you must used a plugged gun. Its kinda goofy to unscrew a 6 shot extension and stick a plug in there but YMMV...

Personally I like my HD shotguns with a shorter LOP than my hunting shotguns.

Thanks, I think this is what I will do. And bird, I do agree about the LOP as well.

Thanks guys!

Unless something has changed lately, nothing is wrong with the mossberg made 870 barrels.

Also if you do just decide on a 2nd 870, Remington has a rebate on the Express currently.

I have 18.5" or 20" defense barrels and 26"-28" barrels for all of my 12 ga pump action shotguns.

It's very easy to switch them back and forth.

I only have one 870 and three barrels. A 28" remchoke barrel, a 20" slug barrel, and a 18" bead sight barrel.

It is no big deal to switch out for birds, deer, or HD.

Buy one from Aippi (regular GT poster & resource on the shotgun threads) off of gun broker

$100 buy it now price + $12 shipping = $112.

IMHO a screaming bargain. Aippi must be an old fool to sell stuff this cheap. :tongueout:

I am assuming it will fit your gun - but not 100% -aippi will know.

This auction also seems interesting -

I resent being called an old fool. I have to sell stuff as I have four ex-wifes......wait, I need a minute to think about that. OK, I was a young fool an now I am old and most likely still a old fool so never mind.
