Trijicon front staked sights for a Commanders come with either a wide or narrow tenon.

They claim the overall sight dimensions are identical.

So, if one used the correct tenon width on a 70 Series Commander, how does one "fit" the sight to eliminate the gap shown below?

Or is that just the nature of the beast when installing aftermarket sights?

That is wrong. The sight might need hand fitting before staking.
