The jacket they issue me is crap. I want to buy my own before cold weather arrives. I prefer a jacket that has a removable lining so it can be both a windbreaker and cold weather jacket. I only need the cold weather jacket a few times a year in my area.

I am also considering a wool uniform sweater so I can just skip the jacket.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I started watching Ebay and I bought a brand new Taylor leather police jacket, for a little over a $100. It comes with a zip out liner. Nothing like the smell and feel of a new leather jacket, although they are heavy.

Yeah, I regret getting rid of my Taylor. It was greatly comfortable in the winter but sucked in our rainy weather. Heavy, too.

But I looked wicked tough in it. Sorta. Like a fat cow, actually. Angry, fat cow.

I've had great luck with Blauer Goretex duty jackets. Good zip out liner, waterproof and well made. I'm sure that comparable Feccheimer or Spiwak would be equal. Like this one:

My vote is for Spiewak. Had one when I was on the job and it was the warmest jacket I ever wore.

we have the "dickie" option.

my flease lined 5.11 jacket is just too damn hot for me in this area even on its coldest.

ive found that a long john shirt, body armor, and a dickie works for me just fine without mobility restrictions. of course a watch cap and gloves are part of this.

I am hesitant to spend $150+ on a duty jacket because a cold night down south is 35deg. I can get away with a long sleeve and a turtle neck 75% of the time.

Shortly after typing this thread up I found a good deal on a wool/acrylic blend commando sweater and ordered it. I was afraid to go 100% wool because I dont think it gets cold enough for that down here very often I think the v-neck sweaters look good and will be easier to wear on duty than a heavy jacket.

I bought a clearance, ike length, waterproof coat with zip-out liner from Galls two years ago for $30. Closest thing I've ever found to a "good" coat. I went Ike length because I wanted it to stop above the duty belt without bunching up (jacket slots are not Safariland UBL friendly, in my experience). I only wear the thing if the temperature (not wind chill, but actual temp) is below zero or the wind chill is below -20. I have owned all manner of other jackets and coats, including a very nice leather one (Nate's Leather brand), but found all of them too cumbersome to be of any use.

Good luck in your search. Others have tried and failed.

Bought one that was on clearance from Galls one year. Like 35 bucks..got it and looked at it real hard. Under the Galls tag was a Spiewak tag. One of the best jackets I have. Check Galls clearance, Quartermaster clearance and sometimes La Police Gear.

For chilly, not cold weather, I really like duty fleece jackets. They are thin, light, fit more naturally than a true uniform jacket, and are wearable as a coat liner if it gets brutally cold. I wore one all last winter and never really wanted anything more.

Mine is a Spiewak S327, from Howard Uniforms ($80 shipped).

Great jacket even in 90% of Ohio's ****-ass condiitons.

We're Bratwear for our duty jacket as they are light enough for the nine months of liquid sunshine and can be layered over fleece for those days when it gets bone chilling (i.e., sub 40 degrees F).

Clearance is good to use if you need anything besides the sweater. I have an acrylic uniform sweater that I wear at times. Along with a light jacket it is sufficient for most days, except for when it gets really cold. Fortunately it doesn't stay really cold all winter here. About a month, maybe month and a half at longest, usually.

Granted, it's bright and shiny and made for EMS... but I love my 5.11 Reflective Parka. I think they make an all black and shorter version with you LEOs in mind.

I've always used the Blauer 3/4 length jackets. Remove the lining even in the dead of winter to increase movement. Then wear cold weather underlayer, turtleneck, bullet resistant vest and fleece vest for warmth.

Love the commando sweaters. Tuck the bottom into your pants, and as long as you're trim and fit, makes you look like a million bucks.

I look ****ing awesome in a commando sweater.
