Ok guys, I thought there was a thread on this previously but my search fu is weak today.

I'm attempting to write a change of policy request so that patrol officers can utilize weapon lights on their pistols. This is already permitted for SWAT and narcotics and a few other units.

Any mock policies/research supporting this stance would be appreciated. PM me for work email address to keep agency policies out of a public forum.

Have you contacted companies that manufacture gun lights? Their LE sales might have existing templates and blurbs to address policy whys.

Also, talk to the C.O.s of your SWAT and narcotics and pick their brains as to how such lights have helped their units, and why it should also be helpful for patrol. Seems if you cite their endorsement, that could carry a lot of weight in your proposal.

Try this:

I attended one of their abbreviated Low Light Instructor Course a few years back. I kick myself for not attending the entire course (it was on my own dime and I just couldn't swing it)....This is a good place to start..Good Luck..:wavey:

The line we get is, "Some moron will use it like a regular flashlight on a traffic stop and sweep the occupants.". To which my reply of, "You already gave that moron a GUN and trust him to decide when to shoot it, but don't think you can trust him with a flashlight on it?" never seems to register in their logic center.

Ours too. But it's for the reason Denikes said. They are afraid we'll use it like a regular flashlight and end up with an ND or shooting someone we didn't mean to.
