For my job.

ATK, parent company of Speer, CCI, and Federal, put on a ballistics workshop with a neighboring agency, in conjunction with Kiesler Defense. Several different rounds were fired, thru different media, into ballistic gelatin, and we got to see firsthand the data and rresults.

Tested rounds included Federal Hydrashok, Speer Gold Dot, Federal Tactical HST, Federal Tactical Bonded, and Hornady TAP, all in. 40. Rifle rounds fired were Hornady TAP, Federal Tactical Bonded (in .223), and Federal Tactical Bonded and Black Hills Match (.308).

I am issues Federal Tactical Bonded, and after seeing the stuff in action, especially compared to Hydrashok or HST, I'm a believer. Media included light cloth, heavy cloth (similar to a Carhartt type jacket) and auto glass. You wouldn't believe the major differences between a bonded round and non-bonded, especially with rifles rounds.

The TAP and Black Hills stuff virtually disentegrated after punching thru glass, hut the bonded stuff retained excellent penetration and a very high percentage of weight retention and shape. And, for the record, the Hornady and Black Hills ammo was brought by other officers; its the stuff they currently issue.

I will have hard data back shortly, and if anyone's is interested,I will post it, along with pics, when i get it all.

By the way, if anyone in nearby, they will bbe in Paducah KY on 10/20, doing the same thing.

I had the fortune of attending one of these back in 2007,with my current department, in E-Town, KY (Hardin County S.O Range), also hosted by the local ATK / Federal rep and the guys from Kiesler's. As a result, we changed our department ammo to a different Federal round (from Hydra-Shok to HST in .40) and adopted a new .223 round. We also had the ability to go above/beyond the FBI protocol as far as shooting through different media. IIRC, we doubled or tripled the protocol for heavy clothing and demin and the HST round performed flawlessly. If anyone ever gets the opportunity to attend one of these ballistic workshops, please do so. You won't be disappointed....

FYI, Kiesler's has video of at least one of these workshops with LMPD on their website.

Did one in 2007 as part of my firearms instructor school. I would like to see a comparison of Gold Dot and Federal Tactical Bonded rifle rounds, myself. We use the Gold Dot because it is easily half the price of the Federal. Our ATK rep said that it still outperformed non-bonded rounds, but was no equal to the Federal stuff.
