A friend of mine is looking into getting a holo sight for an 870 remington pump shotgun. Price range is up to 150 dollars. What are some of the options and what are your opinions of them. Thanks in advance.

Depends on what the purpose of the shotgun is. I find them of no use on a defense shotgun. Also, a shotgun is a close up and personal weapon. A bead sight fits the needs for all shooting. Rifle sights add accuracy for slugs at distance. All this other mess is not needed.

I'd give one of Primary Arm's Micro clones a try.

Have a heart to heart chat with yourself and ask if you really need the sight or just want it.

If you want a conversational piece then get it, enjoy it and buy a matching set of coasters. If you're not going to shoot slugs and distance as your primary shotgun need then leave the bead sight as is. The bead gives you an improved view and is faster than holo, halo or hola or whatever the hell sights you're referring to.

And have your friend come here and post his own questions. :)

I will disagree with the holo haters. I do agree that it isn't NECESSARY - but that doesn't mean it won't help.

I also think circle dot rules for a shotgun. You get a spread indicator for shot, and a point for slugs. Bead can't match that.

Also - for the "fear of Failure" crowd - at up close and personal distances, just put the target in the window. Doesn't need to be on when it's up close and personal...

I am seriously looking at the new Truglo. Right at or over $100, and a reliable company.

I'd be very surprised if you find anything in that price range that can repeatedly take the recoil.
With that being said, one of the Primary Arms offerings is likely your best bet.

The Vortex SPARC runs about $200 and they are outstanding optics, it is basically an Aimpoint T-1 clone. They test them with 1000 rounds 375 H&H mag. Spend $50 more and get a very decent optic.

I laugh when companies brag about a 1000 round test. With a rifle that's about 3 days of shooting for me. Woo-hoo.

I have no idea what I'm talking about, I have a shotgun that will fail the first time I have to fight with it, and have no business even posting on here because i lack professional qualifications.

I am , however, a consumer, and I vote with my wallet and show and prove with my use for protecting my family (who I kind of like) and my dog (Whom I love ).

When I bought two AImpoint Micro R-1s last year, for my ARs, I didn't realize I'd need to buy extra mounts. After buyng the two Aimpoints, and THEN buying a mount for my 5.56 AR, I simply didnt have another $100 bucks that week for another mount, for the 15-22 AR. So I decided, why not try the Micro on my M930SPX? Mossberg made a point of using LPA brand Ghost Ring Sights on it, but also has a factory rail mounted on it. So I figured, why not try it?

It's absolutely amazing. Target acquisition and reponse, i.e pointing and shooting, is amazing Literally I'm better now with the shotgun than any other firearm. Every single time I'm at the range I get compliments on the shotgun and the target, people ask stuff like Wow are you a cop or some sort of military man? I've never seen shotgun shooting like tht etc. Without fail someone will ask to try it and tell me its the best weapon etc. they've ever shot.

Now take that as you will, I could frankly care less what other people think should or shouldn't be used etc. or how I should or should not configure, set up, deploy, etc. my shotguns for HD/combat/even bckyard clay use. - and I Respect whatever anyone else does. I do however have a problem with such blanket statements like _No never do that, you're wrong I'm right you're setup / useage is wrong my philosophy etc is right. I hafe a serious problem with that and I know a lot of people who agree with me. So again, you may not like my ideas and thats absolutely fine- I mean no dispresect and don't intend to say, you should do what I do.

I am simply saying, for example, I use a Mosserg 930 SPX , and by chance added an Aimpoint Micro R-1 (Which is basically a more expensive sight than most people's 870s, and i realize that, not everyone wants or needs it) but I can't get enough of this. Anfd actually my Dad, who never really wanted to use their dept's 870s on the job cause he was not impressed with it, and he said he saw way too many people over the years not use the 870s effectively.. he was amazed at my shotgun setup and actually said, if some of my cop buddies saw this they'd be in love, it's an amazing tool.

But yeah fro me its no tool , its for both having fun and protecting my dog, maybe you'll enjoy yours too with a red dot / holographic sight.
