"He was just checking that car. He pulled over his motorcylce and didn't even get to put the kickstand down before the suspect began firing on him," the sheriff said.

"Deputy James D. Paugh, 47, was on his way home after being on duty and stopped when he saw a suspicious car...."

One of the comments in the article said," J.D. was on his way home off Skinner Mill rd after working a special at a local resturant, when he came across the domestic dispute. Being the fine Deputy he was, he stopped to investigate. Motocycle Deputies do not work at night on patrol, due to the inherient risks that come with riding at night, so he was not dispatched to the call. J.D. was a friend, and will be missed."

I found this on the web. Apparently it is the audio file of the radio traffic, involving the fallen officer.

Unconfirmed reports state that the soldier was drunk and firing at passing cars on the interstate before Deputy Paugh pulled up to see what was going on. This was around 1 am, so it's not yet known if the soldier even knew it was a cop he shot at. There was a girlfriend at the scene, so hopefully she'll help piece together details of what happened.

My sister knew him fairly well. He was a tough, dedicated, and well-respected deputy who had numerous titanium bones and plates from about 3 on-duty and 2 off-duty motorcycle wrecks over the years.

According to the news article:

After the shooting, Jack Pennington, 33, was driving west on Bobby Jones Expressway and stopped when he saw a police motorcycle on its side and a woman running toward him. Pennington said the woman came up to his car screaming, “My boyfriend just shot a cop!” while on the phone with police.

No civilian is going to stop and check on a car at the side of the road at 1AM.

If the gf knew the victim was a cop, the shooter knew also.

Sheriff Ronnie Strength said Paugh probably didn’t realize Hodges and his girlfriend had been fighting on the side of the road and that the officer had just pulled over to conduct a well-being check.

That dedicated character is what hundreds of colleagues, friends and family remembered about Paug...

RIP. Condolences to your family.

Yeah, the autopsy has revealed he was shot at least nine times, so it was definitely more than a reflex shot. This tragedy likely avoided a prolonged shootout with several casualties had multiple officers arrived.
