I've got maybe 2 pounds of the 'old' Unique- maybe 15 years old.

My questions are- 1, wasn't Unique changed a while back?? and 2, can I use the newer data for the old powder?

Thanks.

I chronographed some early 80's Unique compared to a new lot of 2000's Unique and velocity was around 5 fps difference which is so little difference that they could be called identical.

I've used data from as far back as Speer #5 and had no problems with it. As always though, work up loads safely.

The new unique is hotter, noticeably.

So using up the old stuff with current load data will give you lighter loads. No problem.

I get the same velocities with the same charges of "new" Unique as is listed in manuals that are 40 years old.

New Unique behaves like Old Unique, except it is cleaner.

Where's the best place to buy some old really dirty Unique? The new stuff just doesn't cake enough in the action.

Jack must have some of those old cardboard 8# kegs left.:dunno: I have found "new" Unique a tiny bit faster. Could just be lot variation, but that is my exp.

The new Unique is different. It sometimes loads very similar to old unique but often it loads as a slightly faster powder. The newer data should be safe for the slightly slower old Unique.

I've used Unique for over 20 years and never knew of any change in formulation.

An acquaintance who isn't so fond of Unique refers to it as "flammable dirt".

Alliant says all they did was to screen Unique with a closer cut so as to eliminate the fines that were the source of the worst fouling. Oh, and move production from NJ to WV.

WT,

I chrono'd loads with new & old. New is a little hotter.

Good move. At least WV politicians don't hate the firearms industry.

Closer to the mines where they get the coal, I mean Unique, from?
