Thought maybe we could start a picture and story thread for this hunting season?

Il start.

Friday afternoon I drove out to the Tyler area with a couple of my buddies to hunt some property one of them owns. I Didnt expect much so I was in the stand with my bow, and some sailor Jerry's....entertaining myself as best as I could. Nothing for 3 hours and then this guy comes up. He was downwind of me and I swear he wanted a couple of sips of the rum by the way he made a line straight to me. I didn't have to wait long for a decent shot. He ended up broadside to me at about 25 yards and I was about to squeeze off when he turned to face me. I knew I could land one a bit behind his head and hit good vitals so I took the shot. He did not go far.

Let's see/read about yours

Had a good shot at a 3-4 year old wide 10 point 140 to 150 first 30 minutes of shooting light Sat morning. Didn't take the shot, kicking myself. Wasn't an absolute monster, but he was wall worthy for sure. Have a lot of bucks on my cameras over the last month and I know there are some bigger ones in the area. Didn't see another buck the rest of Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

Last weekend I shot two hogs with one shot. Last night I was spotlighting by myself and shot a hog and ended up shooting him further back than I planned, and there was another hog right behind him that i couldn't see. When I drove up to the feeder I saw the one I shot crawling off to the right of the feeder so I walk torwards him with the flashlight shining with my glock 19 to put him away and another hog was hit crawling off to the left dragging his hind legs too. Pure blind luck, two with one shot again. Put a 124 grain hydroshock in the ear of both of them. Both hogs were gut shot, the second on had his guts blown out. Kinda messy cleaning them but they cleaned up ok. I can't say enough about sierra gameking bullets, shooting a 168 gr moly coated hollow point boattail. 2 weeks in a row, completely through 2 hogs.

After the hogs, my buddy and I had a run in with a rattlesnake. We had changed out of our evening hunting gear showered and cleaned up and were not really planning on going out but we decided to check the game cameras to see if there was any buck movement. I broke the cardinal rule of hunting south texas by being lazy and almost paid for it. Went out wearing shorts tshirt and flip flops and left my snake books at the ranch house to air out. We drive the ranch without the lights on the gator as we know all the senderos, roads and trails so well. Pulled up next to a game camera and got out of the gator and almost stepped on a rattlesnake. 2 steps out of the gator and we can see a shape next to us and he started rattling. Left the flashlight in the gator, not sure where to step or what direction to step or if there were more. Needless to say, I will not leave the house without snake boots again......period. All in all a great opening weekned. No buck, but they are there.

Rrtx11 , were you shooting a 308 or a 30-06 ?

Nice story TX. Thanks for that. I have a friend that killed two hogs with one shot last year....I think it was with a .25 06. I wear my "high" boots when out in the woods because of that reason.....damn snakes....you just don't seem or hear em till they move. The ones that take off real fast tend to make me holler cause its f'n scary.

Here is a 3 shot group at 100 yards.
Here is the exit wound on the second hog it went through.
Great load and bullet for this particular rifle.

Deer #3 of the season. This one was cool, because I was in stand for 10 minutes before I shot him.
I moved from one morning stand to one of my afternoon stands at 1:08. Just hooked in my safety harness, and saw this buck walking in the pines on the ridge about 200 yds away. I tipped my bleat can and in he came for an easy shot. Never knew what hit him.

muzzleloader? load used?

This was a last minute trip I used a buddies muzzle loader and his stand.
He said it was a .69 caliber with 80 grains of FFG powder. Not much on the black powder just got back into deer hunting and he had harvested all the deer he wanted for this year. He asked me if I wanted to hunt his property with him so I said yes and it all worked out.
Thanks

My 2011 private land Elk tags went thru Jan 15th, 2012 and I finally filled them last week. First big game I have ever taken & I filled both my tags at the same time with my 7Mag X-Bolt. Shot the first one, cycled the bolt and looked up to see it drop & spook the herd a 2nd time after they were spooked by the shot. Saw the second cow which hadn't turned around with the herd and was standing perfectly broadside, bang! Happened so quick & so close the fun didn't last long enough! Thankfully a friend showed up an hour later to help me field dress them. I was just about done gutting the 1st one when he got there. I was taking my time and was afraid to puncture the bladder. Later the temp dropped to -5 degrees while working on the elk!

A couple days later I happened to look across the property through the binoculars from about 500yds away toward the gut pile & saw a coyote drop in on it. All I had with me was my old Gen 1 G19 w/ XS Express sights, (smaller front site), loaded with Double Tap 147gr FMJ's.

I flanked the gut pile and snuck up behind a rock. Just as I leaned over the rock starting to aim in the general direction, the Coyote popped out of the bushes and didn't have far to go before I'd lose my chance. I had to shoot it on the move & 1st shot hit it in the ass. It started chasing it's tail frantically staying pretty much in the same spot so I aimed & squeezed off a second shot hitting it in the vitals & it dropped it immediately.

When I took the coyote photo & emailed it to a couple friends I estimated the distance of the shots to be 75yds. Today I went back & laser'd the rock from where it dropped and it was 97yds! Checked it 4 times because I was surprised it was that far. That was with my old G19 1st Gen, I can't wait to see what I can do once I put a LWD longslide & threaded 6.61" barrel on my 20SF!

This was the 2nd Elk. The 1st one was a little bigger and is in the second photo.

Nice elk hunt, did you use horses?

Nope, this hunt was on private land so I used the John Deere in the photo.. That being said, when I first moved here in 2009 and didn't have residency for hunting tags, I hiked in 3 miles solo on a moonless night climbing from 7600ft to almost 10,000 and packed out 2 cow elk hind quarters for a buddy. The empty frame pack soon weighed 190lbs and he & his hunting buddy had to help me stand up with it!

I went on a 2nd Rifle season public land deer hunt with my neighbors this past October and we camped at 11,200ft elevation. I had a mule deer buck tag, so of course I saw 5 cow elk go by instead! Kinda glad I didn't get anything because we didn't have horses and hiking 5 miles out in the snow up there is a challenge enough without having to bring an animal back!

The blue tarp tent, our kitchen/hang out tent, is one of those tent garages Costco used to sell and we put like 8 tarps over it and made a custom vestibule. We have a 55 gallon drum converted into a wood burning stove that works awesome now that we finally got it dialed in 1/2 way thru the second year of use!

To me heat, humidity, & mosquito's are worse! Although it does take some serious motivation to get out of my sleeping bags at 4am in sub zero temps to go use that crapper & get ready to hunt!

I got a front flat on my KTM last summer in a wooded area and the mosquito's attacked me furiously. A friend of mine said he had never seen mosquito's so attracted to anyone in his life. He and another buddy took turns fanning me with a shirt while I patched the flat. Boy was I grateful!

I bought a Winchester SX3 28" autoloader, (2 3/4", 3", & 3 1/2" Mag) last summer and all I have done with it besides shoot clays was go on a CDOW organized pheasant hunt. I field dressed my pheasant then stayed behind to field dress the ones left in the cooler and ended up with 9 pheasant. Made for some good eating! I can't wait to do some more bird hunting! I have a couple buddies trying to get something setup down in the Denver area. Nothing like your airboat duck hunting operation though!

This Winchester SX3 is kinda funny. On the gun it says Made By FN Beligium, Imported by BACO (Browning Arms Company) yet it wears a Winchester logo. From what I have read, FN owns both Winchester Arms, (not Winchester Ammo), and Browning Arms Co. The action is the same action in FN tactical shotguns, the quickest semi auto action in the world currently. Patrick Flannigan set a record of 12 shots in 1.44 seconds with one.

That SX3 in Mossy Oak Duck Blind was my 1st shotgun. I almost bought the Benelli SBE-2 but did a bunch of research and read that the inertia system sometimes hiccups with light target loads. Then I watched some reviews on the SX3 and learned it vents the excess gases of hot loads through side vents to reduce recoil. After shouldering both, and both feeling great I went with the SX3 & am very happy with it. Even though it vents excess gas, those 3 1/2 Magnum shells still pack a wallop!

When's duck season??

From October 2011, bear hunting in Vermont. First time son and I had hunted anything so we were going by the "seat of our pants". Did not see any bear, but found fresh bear sign, along with moose, deer, and turkey sign. Absolutely gorgeous weather but COLD. It was in the teens in the morning. We had proper clothing so we were able to enjoy the day while being comfy warm.

Growing up in Connecticut we are just used to the idea of orange when hunting even if it is not required in Vermont.

This picture is in the afternoon. Just a beautiful afternoon in Vermont to take the guns for a walk in the woods:
