View Full Version : Looking for a .40 load

I want to load a nice, soft shooting .40 load.
Powder being used (because it is what I have several pounds of) is HP38.
Anybody got any suggestions?
Anyone ever loaded the 125 grain frangible bullet, if so how did it run for you.

Loads will be used primarily for GSSF, not bullseye and so no power-factor issues will matter. It just needs to feed and function. I will be using 4th gen G22 and 4th gen G27 unless I can't get a load to work, then I will go back to 3rd gen.

Thanks in advance.

Use a 180 cast flatpoint. Start at the starting load for the powder, and work down a couple of tenths at a time. I use 3.5 Bullseye which is a little faster than 231/HP38. About 3.8-4.0 would be about right. You'll have a cheap, accurate, soft shooting load.

I shoot Berrys 180gr FPRS with 4.4gr of W231(which is pretty much the same as HP38) at 1.135 oal. Shoots real soft and accurate out of my G35.

Based on the above two posts, my loads might be a bit more powerful than what you're looking for. You can use them for a reference point.

5.2gr W231 under a 180gr Zero JHP, or 4.9gr under a 175gr LSWC. COL is 1.125 for either, and they both chrony at 920-925 thru a stock P229.

My soft 40S&W recipe as of right now consists of 180 grain FMJ bullets from Montana Gold, CCI primers, 4.4 grains of W231 powder, with an overall length of 1.125

Very similar to my load, I use 4.5 Gr hp-38 at 1.125 OAL. Low recoil, and very accurate out of my G22.

3.8grs. WST w/180gr. bullet - very accurate, very clean burning, and low recoiling it's the best .40 practice/gamer load I've ever used.

I just loaded up 50 rounds using a Lee 175gr SWC tumble lube bullet(actually came out to 183 grs but close enough) and winchester small pistol primers with 5.0 grs of Unique. Soon as the rain blows thru and I get a chance I'll go out back and run a few thru my PX4 and over my Chrony to see what kind of Vel. I'm getting. Hopefully they'll be around 950fps which is what I'm looking for.

I have some WST and it's almost impossible to find load data, even on Hodgedon's own data site. What bullet/ OAL do you use with that load?

You'll be close enough to 950 with that load.

That would be very sweet. Not looking to burn any barns but don't want a "soft" load either. Just in case I have to use em' on Zombies.:whistling:

I shoot 170-180 grain bullets, with 4.0 Red Dot, for about 950 fps.

3.7 grains of WST, 180 grain cast, 1.135OAL is an awesome target load, runs at 850 fps through my glock 35. single digit SD's over the chrono.

I'm using 4 grs of WST with Rainer 155gr plated.. 1.125 OAL... I started with the recommended load 4.6-5.3, and downloaded till it didn't cycle which was 3.8 grains for me.

I've never even seen 125 frangible bullets for sale (or any frang's), but I haven't been looking. They gotta be pricey compared to "normal" bullets.

Hey Bama, I bought a few of these (like 13,000) of them. I found this data for Sinterfire 125 gr frangible:
125 GR. SFIRE Hodgdon Universal .400" 1.120" 4.7 1059 23,500 PSI 5.3 1172 32,300 PSI
125 GR. SFIRE Winchester 231 .400" 1.120" 4.8 1060 29,500 PSI 5.4 1132 31,500 PSI
125 GR. SFIRE Hodgdon HP-38 .400" 1.120" 4.8 1060 29,500 PSI 5.4 1132 31,500 PSI
125 GR. SFIRE IMR PB .400" 1.120" 4.8 1057 23,800 PSI 5.3 1127 26,500 PSI
125 GR. SFIRE Hodgdon Titegroup .400" 1.120" 4.3 1041 24,700 PSI 4.8 1145 31,300 PSI
125 GR. SFIRE IMR 700-X .400" 1.120" 4.6 1069 27,900 PSI 5.2 1143 31,200 PSI
Your HP-38 is the same powder as WW231, which is what I'm using. My load I settled on is, 5.0 grs WW231, COL 1.125". It gives me 1010 fps average out of a G27. It has very nice and light recoil, also runs my G24 just fine. I love these bullets!

I got a deal on a bunch of Berry's 155 gr. round nose hollow backs a few years ago and worked a load down to 5.3 gr of Win 231 (same as HP38) loaded to OAL 1.130. They are soft but have functioned perfectly in all of my gen. 2 and gen. 3 .40s. I don't have a gen 4 .40 so I'm not sure how they'd do in one.

I've not used a frangible bullet but for a soft shooting .40 load with HP-38/W-231, you can run 3.7 grains under a 180 grain jacketed or plated and still make minor.
