Southern Nuclear, headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, operates Southern Company's six nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama: two reactors at Plant Vogtle, near Waynesboro, GA; two reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA; and two reactors at Plant Farley, near Dothan, AL. In addition, planning and excavation activities are underway for the future construction of two new reactors at our Plant Vogtle location. We currently have an opportunity at our corporate headquarters for a Security Investigator.


The Investigator position provides Corporate Security support and investigative services for Southern Nuclear Operating Company. The position is located at Southern Nuclear Operating Company's corporate headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama, and provides security services at that location, company nuclear power generating facilities in Alabama and Georgia, Southern Company Services facilities - Inverness and for other locations of company functions or operations as requested. This position will support the needs of the company business, providing protection of employees, contractors, customers and physical assets, emergency response, security consultation, and investigations to its internal customers. Investigations include both internal and external matters.

Primary duties include responding to complaints of violations of federal, state, and local laws; regulatory mandates; and company policies. Such violations may be associated with company employees, contractors, vendors, outsourced service providers, or temporary employees. Duties of the position also include identifying and mitigating exposures that could compromise Company assets and conducting benchmarking activities to ensure best practices are incorporated by the Corporate Security Department. This position supports drug and alcohol testing related to the Company fitness for duty program. This position supports the responsibility of Corporate Security to serve as primary liaison for the company with local, state, and federal law enforcement investigative and prosecutorial agencies. The incumbent's primary office will be located in Birmingham, but is required to travel to various sites and locations.


NOTE: The position requires extensive travel within Alabama and Georgia. The incumbent must be flexible and able to travel on short notice. This position requires incumbent to work on an "on call" status and may require after hours, weekend and holiday work.

BS/BA degree or higher in criminal justice, or a related field, is preferred.
Minimum of 3 years investigative experience in a security or law enforcement/criminal justice field is desired.
Knowledge of applicable civil, criminal, and federal laws as well as principles of rules of evidence, search and seizure, court procedures is required.
Significant computer keyboard and software experience is desired.
This position should have excellent skills in problem solving, communication, initiative, decision making, and leadership.
The position must demonstrate teamwork, interpersonal skills, ethical behavior and personal responsibility.
Demonstrated ability to prepare and present reports of investigative findings and recommendations, verbally and in writing, is required.
This position must have the ability to deal effectively and build relationships with individuals or groups at all levels of the company as well as the public and private sector.
This position must be legally qualified to carry a concealed firearm and qualify with department firearms proficiency standards.
Physical requirements include but are not limited to: lifting, reaching, climbing, standing, sitting for extended periods, working in extreme weather conditions and working from elevated positions (platforms, catwalks, roofs, etc.).


Conducts investigations
Submits concise written reports and memorandums in a timely manner
Maintains liaison with federal, state, and local law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies, as well as with security professionals in other corporations
Conducts investigations involving misuse of computers and other company electronic resources
Conducts drug and alcohol testing
Works closely with department investigators, other system Corporate Security departments, and law enforcement to provide superior security service to the company.
