What do you choose to load your carry piece with and why?

I'm sure the caliber will also be debated here, hence this section.

I like the 230gr .45acp in a +p form. I like the heavy/fast bullet flying out at a bad guy.

9mm Federal 115JHP+P+ (9BPLE).

Why? Because it has three decades of street proven, fight stoppin' ability.

Uh, sounds like you JUST want a caliber debate. You didn't even mention what brand of ammo you use.

9mm CCW: Winchester 147gr Ranger-T (RA9T). Why? Because I found it at an awesome price and now have a lot of it on hand.

.40 nightstand gun: 180gr Ranger-T (RA40T). Why? It was the cheapest and easiest to find of the major, street proven JHP rounds (Rangers, Gold Dots, HST).

.45 CCW: 230gr Ranger-T (RA45T). Why? Same as the .40.

HD gun: P220 with Streamlight TLR-1 .45acp loaded with 230g Gold Dots
CCW gun: P239 9mm loaded with 147g Gold Dots
Duty gun: P226 .40sw loaded with 165g Gold Dots
BUG: 442 .38spl loaded with 135g+P Gold Dot short barrel
Hunting camp gun: SW Model 10-6 4" .38spl K-frame loaded with 125g+P Gold Dots.

I generally prefer standard pressure heaviest load for the caliber, but my dept mandates the 165g load in .40 and the short barrel load is supposed to be one of the best out of a snubby and it is only offered in 135g+P.

I also keep some Winchester Ranger RA45T on hand I found a good deal on it on ammo2go.com and picked up a few boxes. It is not my preferred load, but it is a great load and at the time I got 50rd boxes for under $30 each shipped.

I like the Gold Dot and think it is a good round, but the main reason I carry it is my agency issues Gold Dots for free in .38, 9mm, and .40 any other calibers and its up to you provide the ammo.

I also keep some of the 158g+P LSWCHP "FBI" load in .38spl, but generally carry the Gold Dots.

And as far as caliber goes I am not a fanboy of any certain caliber. IMO any quality load .38spl or above will do the job.

You said "carry," so I assume you are referring to CCW / EDC.

Glock 27 (CBST holster) with 165-gr HST or Ranger T-series. Spare mag with same in weakside front pocket in DeSantis "Mag Packer" holster

I figure best "compromise" for concealability, capacity, and power.

Your mileage may vary.

M1911 45acp 230gr FMJFP, or WW 230gr PDX1's, Or 230gr Hornady TAP FPD.
Also am really warming up to my G36 with my handloads of 230gr XTP @ 900FPS. What a cool little 45 this is. Got over 1400 rds through it and it is so dang light I am begining to carry it 'in town' quite a bit.

Got to admit one more thing I never thought I'd say or do, over my beloved 45's. I am growing real fond of my G29 loaded with my hand loads of 200gr XTP and 10.5 grs BD. Only down side there (for me) is it feels like a brick to carry. I don't like the 'chuncky feel of the slide', but no real biggie. I am not sure it will never replace the 45's, but I have been 'sneaking him out' lately while the 45's are watchin...

Good shooting

Not caring for a caliber debate, but it may happen.

I don't have any specific brand I like. Right now I have Winchester Rangers, but it's the weight that I prefer in this caliber; the combo of a +p with 230gr I don't like the heaviest in a smaller caliber. In a nine, I like to go with 124gr but doesn't have to be in +p or more for me in that caliber

Years ago you could have a spirited debate on caliber.
Particularly in short barreled SD guns.
Today, with new high tech ammo, not so much - LOL!

9mm/357 sig/40/45/357 mag/10mm take your bloody pick LOL!

With the best Speer/Winchester/Federal...
I'm not going to name them all
ammo, in just about any SD weight,+P or not, and you're good to go!

I think it's a lot more important to find out what platform and caliber YOU
are most comfortable and proficient with.

As for my personal preference?
I carry a G27 with 2 G22/15 round mags full of -
Speer GDHP 155 Duty ammo.
This stuff is bonded and runs about 1150 fps/450 E out of the short barrel.
If I can't finish the fight with 40 rounds, then I'm forced to whip out the Spyderco and carve up some turkey

Currently running 180 grain Speer Gold Dots. I also rotate to 165 grain Horniday Critical Defense in .40cal. I've heard both brands are very consistant.

I train with 180/165 grain Winchester White Box, or Federal FMJs. Have been also training with RWS 180 grain FMJs. Since I don't do reloads, I go with most affordable factory stuff I can get. So far, so good.

Ranger T 127 +p+ because it's what the Sheriffs office require and the LGS has a lot of it in 50 round boxes.

Duty gun:

Glock 23 RTF2, department issues either 180 grain Gold Dot or Ranger T, depending on which is a better deal at the time. Currently carrying the Ranger T.

Backup/off-duty:

Glock 26, Speer Gold Dot 124 grain (+P), wanted a mid-weight JHP, the GD was what the police supply store has in 50 round boxes.

Ruger SP101 2 1/4", Federal Hydrashok 158 grain .357 Magnum. I like the heavy bullets in the .357, and the Hydrashok was what I could find. I will likely switch to the 158 grain Gold Dot if the police supply store has it in 50 round boxes next time I am in there. I like the Hydrashok just fine, but I could only find 20 round boxes of it.

Ruger LCR .357, Same as above, .357 Hydrashoks.

Before I had a moment of stupidity and sold my Glock 36 I was carrying Winchester Ranger T 230 grain, once I have the money to buy another Glock 36 I will be carrying the same ammunition.

I'll eventually replace the Glock 26 with a 27 so I can use the same magazines on my duty belt if necessary (though I will be keeping the 26, not selling it). When that happens I will be carrying the same PD issue 180 grain JHPs, either GD or Ranger T.
