Anyone know when the new Colt sp901 is going to be available in gun shops.

I'm hearing January 2012 as when they will start arriving. If they keep it under $2000, it should sell quite nicely.

Thank you Airborne Infantryman, I have seen some ads where the price was around $1,800, but the rifles where sold out.

I guess I won't be picking up that 6940 after all. January is fine as I get my tax money.

How did they make a gun that will shoot 308 and 223 uppers?

How did they make a gun that will shoot 308 and 223 uppers?

If I remember correctly, it requires an entire upper to switch between the two cartridges. I would also think that the buffer/recoil spring would need to be changed also.

Someone more knowledgeable on the topic will correct me if I'm wrong.

It takes 5.56 uppers and also 5.56 magazines, I don't know how they do it. If I get one, more than likely I will just use it in 308 mode.

I have enough 5.56 rifles. I like it because its 308, priced right, and Colt.

I am looking forward to this one.

So this means that you'll have a rifle/carbine with a receiver that has a big ass mag well that would require some sort of block so that the M16 mags can be used?

Again, as far as I remember reading, that's correct. I think there is some sort of mechanism in the lower for using 5.56 mags when need be. I'm getting the impression that outside of being a new 7.62x51MM rifle (and it is a sweet lookin' one), there's little value in it also accepting a 5.56MM upper. Also, keep in mind it's DI and not piston....a positive for some, not so much for others, it's basically a 6940 on 'roids. I'd get a SCAR17 instead.

Yeah it would look kinda funny having a p mag inserted into a 308 lower receiver.

That's why I'll just use it the way it comes (308).

I'm more interested in the rifle because I like the Colt name, and It's not that unreasonable price wise.

You can swap mil spec style 5.56 complete uppers onto the lower and then you insert the supplied magazine well block. No tools required. It uses the Vltor A5 receiver extension tube, spring and buffer set up which already works with AR15 / AR type .308 rifles without swapping spring and buffer. Cost should be right around $2K. Some are saying just under that price.

I prefer that it's DI. On average the DI system is more accurate, and that's one of the reasons why I'm going into the AR-10 system, because they are accurate.

Piston, don't really need it. I'm not going to shoot 1,000 + rounds full auto, or suppressed.

Also I like to take care and clean the rifles I use.

The SCAR is a 1,000+ dollars in price and what advantage does it have over the AR-10, besides weighing less.

I don't discredit the DI system (in AR-15's or AR-10's), I believe the LMT MWS beat out the SCAR in the Brit's choice for a 308.

The piston AR concept was a fix without a problem (while it created many problems). Glad to see Colt stuck with a proven system. Let's hope this rifle runs!

They apparently have some magwell adapter their waiting to show the specifics on while the lawyers get the patenting and such done. Wish it was a piston gun though

Rifles with DI:ar-15

Piston Rifles: Everything else:tongueout:

The rifle will be heavy enough already. The piston will just add weight and again it is a solution looking for a problem.

I don't believe we have any idea of the price of 901s yet, so we'll have to wait & see.

Go to M4-carbine some nice reviews, but you will not like the price he got it for.

Taxes only.

GOD how I hate that man.
