View Full Version : Built a new bench...
My new bench is finally finished. It took exactly 7 days to build. I started last Sunday and just finished.
This is what it looked like last Sunday.
http://members.cox.net/chrismosteller/newbench1.JPG
First I cleaned it up.
http://members.cox.net/chrismosteller/newbench2.JPG
Then I ripped out the old cabinets.
http://members.cox.net/chrismosteller/newbench3.JPG
Ran some wire.
http://members.cox.net/chrismosteller/newbench4.JPG
And then started dry walling.
http://members.cox.net/chrismosteller/newbench5.JPG
More dry wall.
http://members.cox.net/chrismosteller/newbench6.JPG
Put some mud up.
http://members.cox.net/chrismosteller/newbench7.JPG
http://members.cox.net/chrismosteller/newbench8.JPG
Started installing the cabinets.
http://members.cox.net/chrismosteller/newbench9.JPG
And the finished product.
http://members.cox.net/chrismosteller/newbench10.jpg
The cabinets came with a 5/8" top. Over that I put a 5/8" sheet of plywood. Over that 3/4" of counter top. That adds up to a total of 2". I could jump on it if I wanted to. There is no movement at all.
I bought all the cabinets at home depot. There were very inexpensive but worked fine.
Thanks for reading.
Oh, I forgot, special thanks to Hozer for answering all my questions and allowing me to attempt to copy his reloading room :wavey:
Thanks Hozer.

Dang! That is one heck of a transformation. Congratulations and good work!
A solid base is the most important thing to good reloads with little frustration

I envy those with true talent to accomplish things like what you've done. Others like me have to pay to have to pay to have it done due to not having the tools nor expertise. Sure wished you were my next door neighbor. !!!
that's an awesome remodel job you did.
Really nice work.
Congrats.
btw, I've always HATED muddin and sandin....last time I did it, I couldn't wait until I was done and I promised myself to NEVER mud and sand again.

I know. I hate it also. You can't tell from the picture, but the mud is far from perfect. I should have probably put another layer but I was too impatient.

Looks really nice.
Looks really nice.
Thanks Steve.
Here are a few more pics. In the large cabinet on the right I installed an outlet and a air hose attachment. If you look hard you can see it in the picture. This brings air to the rest of my garage.

Nice job.
It makes me feel like reloading and I'm also hungry for some reason.
Looks great.
Glad I could help.

Excellent work! I like the light color, in order to see easily any spilled powder, lost primers, etc.
Very Nice! I imagine you will feel great working in that nice new space.

I was going to put a dark counter top in, but wanted the Dillon blue to pop.
Great work! Looks a lot more user-friendly, and it's quite a bit brighter. Can't beat that!

I guess I missed the pics?
Edit: Nevermind, I see the problem... looks like Cox might be the issue. Put them on Photobucket or Flickr

WHERE THE HELL ARE THE PICTURES?
IF THERE'S NO PICTURES IT DIDN'T HAPPEN, AND IF IT DID HAPPEN AND HOZER HELPED IT'S GOING TO FALL APART ANYWAY.

LOL... Take a Paxil Jack..
It looks like he probably reached his bandwidth allocation w/ Cox, thus they look like they aren't letting the pics load anymore.
He'd be better off putting them on a site like Photobucket, Picasa, or Flickr.
Edit: Hmm, they are showing now... Go figure.. :). Looks really nice XDRox.

Just clicked back on the thread and the pictures showed up... it's magic I tell ya, magical magic, or sorcery.
A very nice job indeed, Chris, very, very nice. A bit effeminate but I blame that on Hozer's influence. Might want to hang a Playboy calendar to help quash any upcoming rumors.

Thanks Jack. If it makes you feel any better I built the bench with funds that I was going to buy another plastic pistol with on black Friday. One less plastic pistol is always a good thing right?
The whole thing only cost $600, for everything. Those cabinets are only $95 each. It did take my whole Thanksgiving break. I think I get 3 weeks off for Christmas. My wife wants me to do the other wall of the garage that isn't finished yet. It's going to be a laundry area :crying:
Lint, high humidity and smokeless powder don't mix. Then again, your source for used softener sheets is close by...
(I don't see the pics, either!)

I'm opening a Flickr account right now. It'll take a couple minutes.

Yeah, I'ld like to see the pics to, see what you teachers can do in your off time.
Flickr sucks. I can't get full size images to come up.
I'll try letting GT host a photo of the finished project.
It worked.

I like the "before" better. Why did you take out those nice white cabinets?
The pictures showed up this time. Very nice, you did a great job. I can only dream about something like that, all of my stuff is restricted to the garage.
Chris,
Looks great. I like the cabinets, if I ever do it again I might have to copy you!

Far too nice to reload in. How are you going to do bullet casting in that nice space?

Thanks, but that is my garage.
Chris,

Thanks. The only bad thing about these cabinets is that they're only 19" deep. Which is a plus for me because I can barely get my truck in the garage, so I needed the smaller size. But if I would have had the room, I'd have gotten standard 24" deep cabinets. When I do the back wall of my garage I'm going 24".

It won't stay that nice for very long El Niņo only lives 3 blocks away
Actally I screwed the conter top on from below. You're suppose to glue them on but I wanted to have the option to switch it out after I wreck it. They only cost $104 for 10'. So I figured after a few years I'll just swap it out. I had to fill an ammo can with 85lbs of ingots and put it on the table when I screwed it on in order to hold the counter top down.
So in other words I'm prepared to thrash it :)
very nicely done. i see the pics, just fine.
Nice clean setup. I need to build a reloading table for my newly bought stuff. I have to try and figure out how high I want it though.
I use Photobucket. You have several choices on image sizes up to 2048x1536. If you upgrade to the Pro you can post even larger pics.

My bench in 37.5" high. I use Dillon's slightly taller strong mount (they make two heights) and it's just perfect for me. I tell people I'm 5'10". I'm going to order another strong mount for my Rock Chucker, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
The strong mount (or another mount of some sort) is essential if you plan to have drawers like I do.

Boy Howdy And what Jack said a girly pic . and maybe a Nascar poster, even if you're not a fan :-P perhaps one of those sawblade clocks and a pic of OBL with a target on his face ... That ought to dispel any rumors

Not unless 404.jpg is a solid black picture of nothing. The others work, though.

You're right, the black square is even more stunning on the iPhone than it is on the laptop. Truly remarkable!

To the OP Great job!!
rpgman, use a terry cloth rag and a 5 gal bucket of water. Dip the rag in the water and wring out the excess water. Rub the mud with a medium pressure and it will wet sand it so to speak. Rinse and repeat. No dust at all.

sounds like a good idea.
Where were you when I was changing my garage into another room on my first house 22 years ago, lol.
I sanded those walls for days and hated every minute of it. That's when I vowed NEVER to do it EVER again.
When we added a sunroom onto our current home, I had someone do all the work.

+1. Wet sanding works real well if you are careful with the initial mudding. You can also use a sponge instead of the terry cloth.
If you are sloppy and really cake it on, use one of those screen type sanding sheet for some fast knockdown of the excess.
