An Okaloosa County deputy is in stable condition tonight after being wounded in a shootout this afternoon with a wanted Santa Rosa County man.

Okaloosa County deputy Steve Hough, 42, of Fort Walton Beach was assigned to the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Hough sustained multiple wounds to his leg, as well as a wound to his face that is believed to be a gunshot. He was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital.

State Attorney Bill Eddins said the deputy and several others were serving three warrants on David Christopher Lewis at his home when Lewis came out shooting.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office said Lewis had active warrants for resisting an officer without violence, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

"Lewis was known to be violent, armed with firearm(s), and had made threats towards law enforcement," a news release from the Sheriff's Office said.

The Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office is pursuing criminal charges for attempted murder and aggravated assault against Lewis, the release said.

Law enforcement officers returned fire, wounding Lewis. He was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital for treatment.

Escambia County Sgt. Mike Ward said several agencies, including deputies from Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties, as well as U.S. marshals, were serving the warrants on Lewis.

"Anytime you approach a house it's inherently unpredictable," Ward said about the danger of serving a warrant or answering a call. "You don't know the layout of the house or who's inside, let alone their intentions."
