EXCLUSIVE

The College of Staten Island employee who died of an apparent heart attack last month after fleeing a cop who caught him smoking pot had good reason to run -- he was a violent fugitive from Texas living here under a fake name, The Post has learned.

Gun-toting thug Patrick Dotson, 40, of Houston, is the true identity for the deceased man from the Nov. 29 incident on the Willowbrook campus.

Authorities had initially identified the victim as 10-year veteran food-services worker Corey Holmes, 39, of the Bronx.

The revelation occurred when investigators ran the corpse’s fingerprints and they linked back to Dotson, who twice shot at men in separate incidents in Houston.

“That's why he got spooked and fled. He knew if they ran his prints and saw his raps, he was going back to Texas to face the music,” said one source.

Dotson was serving eight years probation for a shooting he did on Jan. 7, 1998 when he was collared for another shooting on Feb. 21, 1999, reveal records obtained exclusively by The Post.

At 10 p.m. that night, Dotson started blasting at three men sitting in a vehicle outside an apartment complex in south Houston.

He also squeezed off several rounds at a man he was beefing with as the targeted victim exited a building, said law enforcement officials in Texas.

No one was hit in the hail of gunfire and Dotson – who was working as a nursing assistant at the time – was nabbed red-handed nearby with a 40-caliber Glock and a magazine still containing eight rounds, the officials said.

Dotson was charged with aggravated assault and released on $50,000 bail, records show.

He was also required to post an additional $50,000 bail in order to remain free after violating the probation he was serving for the prior shooting, the documents state.

Dotson was indicted and due in court on June 9, 1999, but never showed.

“He was really scared of going to jail,” said the bail bondsman who forfeited the $100,000 when Dotson skipped town. His criminal background also included a prior marijuana conviction from 1994, for which he paid a $500 fine and spent eight days behind bars, records show.

“It’s not the best trip in the world, but it’s not the end of the world. But I guess he didn’t want to go back,” said the bondsman.

Dotson vanished, only to resurface in New York with an assumed identity he allegedly stole from an acquaintance, sources said.

His life on the lam came to an abrupt end when he, posing as Holmes, was busted last month sparking a joint in an isolated bathroom near an athletic field at CSI.

“Were you just smoking in here,” the Staten Island Task Force cop asked him during the 12:15 p.m. encounter, sources said.

“Yea, I just lit one up,” Dotson quipped.

He bolted from the stall when the cop demanded his ID.

The officer tackled Dotson, who made a desperate bid to wrest away the officer’s gun. Several civilians aided in the arrest.

No shots were fired and Dotson later died at Richmond University Medical
Center.
The official cause of death is still pending, said a spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office.

Dotson’s open cases in Texas were subsequently closed and dismissed on Dec. 2, with “Defendant died in custody in New York” scrawled across the documents.

A spokesman for the College of Staten Island declined to comment, citing an ongoing investigation.

Dotson started at the school in January 2001 as a part-time employee in auxiliary services and was hired full-time six months later.

He was brought on by a subcontractor and it’s unclear what kind of background check that agency did, sources said.

Is it just me or does anyone else hate when a reporter uses the term "beef" regarding a dispute?

One less skell in the world. The judge probably would have RORd him anyway.

It's amazing how quiet some critics become when something called the "FACTS" are mentioned. I'm positive if the perp was (insert your choice of ethnic group here), the outcome would have been no different....:dunno:
