I just received my shipment of this ammo and all I can say is, Wow! This is gorgeous ammo. When I look at the business end of this bullet, the first image that comes to mind is 'largemouth bass'. The opening for the hollow point is much larger than Ranger-T for example. The inside of the hollow point is smoothly filled with a silverish concave metal, presumably lead. This appears to be very high quality JHP.

What's the difference with commercial HST? Three things: the box is plain, although clearly identified as Federal HST; the spec for fps is much tighter than civvy ammo (more consistent); and the brass case is not nickel coated.

Nothing but the best for our Feds, and now me. Get it while you can.

I prefer nickel cases. Don't tarnish and are easier to see in low light.

As far as tighter velocity specs I found this:

P40HST1 990-1025 FPS
Xm40HC 1015 +/- 16 FPS

So in other words, regular HST has a spread of 35 fps and XM has a spread of 32. Big whoop.

Well, the "big whoop" is $17/50 rather than $28-32.

The point is, this is not Winchester "Z" or ammo that has been downgraded from first quality. It is OK to trust as carry ammo and therefore is the bargain of the year.

Got me some, too! A bargain.

Cost me $26 a box in July 2010, at the FT. Knox KY PX. So $17 a box aint bad.
Hollowpoint reminds me of the Speer 230 Gr.45 round the "Flying Ashtray".
I actually pulled out a round and ran my thumb over the hollow point cavity, and cut myself on it!

The difference is that the Ranger is "Z" labeled which means formally downgraded to seconds by Winchester and therefore not recommended for SD. Racer88 has a thread on this ammo where he had considerable problems with it. The HST is first quality all the way, intended for carry by ICE but just a production overrun. It is also $20/500 more. Buyer Beware.

I've shot 500 rounds of the Ranger Z Bonded through my 22, 24 and 23 with no problems. Why is it one person has a problem and its " buyer beware "?

My individual experience isn't conclusive. I have yet to re-test the (bonded ranger) ammo in different magazines / guns. Will get around to it and update.

Buyer Beware.I do not sell the Z or the X ammo because there is no guarantee case to case that the ammo was made to the same specs. Most are contract over runs or seconds. Since they are contract loads the specs can change contract to contract.

Because if you go to the vendor's website and read the detail on this particular load of Z, you will learn that some cartons were crushed by overstacking pallets. Who knows what this may have done to some of the ammo. It's a crap shoot which ones you get, good or possibly damaged. That's why it's so cheap, not recommended for carry and buyer beware.

The Federal is a first quality government agency overrun (reportedly ICE) which means plain box, brass case (not nickel coated) and tighter fps spec. It looks like great ammo capable of performing consistently as SD ammo, although I'll add another caveat in that I have not proved that yet (but will soon).

It says "the Ammo is still perfect" which I know to be true, and it says nothing about not recommended for carry.

Notice : Winchester had these pallets triple stacked in the warehouse some some of the cartons and boxes have been slightly crushed, the ammo is still perfect. Click on the last picture to see an example of these boxes.

I still tend to believe this is more slightly out of spec ammo than it is truly just contract overrun ammo. When Federal fulfills a contract they know how much ammo they will need. Why would they make hundreds of thousands of ammo in excess of that, knowing they will have to dump it at a huge discount?

That said, I wouldn't throw this stuff away because a couple in a lot run 5 fps over spec... At $169 I may pick up a 500 round case myself.
