Just got 600 lbs of lead. Its lead wire .280 guage and 4.5% sb and 1% sn. Not sure what the SB is, or SN. Any clue? Its very soft, to soft for bullets I'd think, so I imagine I will need to add something. Tin maybe??? So far all my loading has been with jacketed bullets. So this is a whole new world for me.

What all will I need? A mold, a batton, a pot to melt in, what sort of heat source? What else?

Any good site you could direct me to to read up more on casting?

SB is antimony, SN is tin

You need to tell us where you got it. PM me with the info two weeks before you post it to the public.

You basically have wheel weight alloy. Good stuff. Plenty hard for most stuff, and you can water drop them from the mold if you need to cheat the hardness a little.

Get a nice pot with a bottom pour, mold(s), handles (turns out molten lead is hot) and a sizer / lubricator. It's possible you won't have to size and can use liquid alox to lube.

Lol Got it from my job with my boss's bleasing. My buddy and I took all they had. They had 1200 lbs, he took half for a Xmas gift for his dad and father in law. Unfortunatly they wont be getting any more. A good start either way though

Thank you for the sources. So even just 4.5% atimony and 1% tin its hard enough? It seems very soft

Just a thought. Lead wire is spendy stuff. Many bullet swaging guys buy lead wire for cores. You may be able to trade it for a larger supply of ww alloy. Just a thought. Take that to the Cast Boolit forum & see if anyone is interested. That is perfect size wire for 30cal bullets swaging.
Get the Lyman Cast bullel handbook, pretty much asnwers all the questionsa bout casting. I prefer a bottom pour pot to cast from, the 20# Lee is tough to beat for the $$. Then you have to decide on what mold & how you want to lube &/or size.

See, Fred agrees, it's too much trouble. Send it to me before you do something you'll regret.

Come on Jack, sending you lead is like sending ice to eskimos. Send it to the poor folks behind the iron curtain of Kalif. I think they are making it a felony to have biohazard mat'l. like lead.:crying:

I am but it feels like it sometimes. No lead bullets in the Condor zones, felony for bringing high cap mags across the border, DOJ approval required for all handguns, blah, blah. Keep in mind we are $24B in the whole every year w/ over paid govt employees getting as much as 90% pensions, but hey, the ****ing weather is awesome!:tequila:

Right, I guess the weather acts something like Prozac to keep us all numb and unaware of what is going on around us.. But I detoxed from that whole weather crap awhile ago... Its like hey your in prison but look at how nice the weather is.. By the way your taxes are due for your cell, plus you broke some EPA laws so there is also a bill for your violation there too....:steamed:

Yep, it's why I have planned my exit strategy. Unlike XDrox, I am not retiring in sunny Kalif. Nope, I have a nice 10ac spot in Montana waiting for a house & me to move in. If the wife wants to come along, great, if not, just me & the dog then.

What would I do with 600#'s of lead? It's winter time so I would spend almost 40 hours out in the shop turning it into a little over 18,000 230g 45 bullets.

Sorry but I could not resist!

What could you do with 600 pounds of lead wire? Use it for balancing weight (sort of like Ballast) in your' favorite Bass boat. When you step into the boat and it leans too far to the left or right depending on where your steering wheel is located, just throw 200 to 300 pounds on the other side of the boat. Once upright and balanced, you are good to go! LOL!!!!

That would work if I told the neighbors I was from Kalifornia. Instead I am going to speak w/ a German accent & tell everyone I am a recent immigrant. I'll get a better welcoming out of that.:tongueout:

Just a thought, but that's pretty close to some of this in diameter... and at almost 4 bucks a pound, I'd be tempted to dump it all for half of market or trade someone 1 lb of wire for 2.5-3 lbs of WW alloy... just sayin....
