I have a pound of Unique and I really dont care for the stuff, I want to burn it up in my .40 reloads.

Alliant says 7.2grs under a 165gr slug = 1064fps
seems like I should be able to go up a bit from that :dunno:


whats a hot (not Nuclear) load for Unique and 165gr FMJ's?

Hot loads just wear out your gun not to mention your joints faster. A nice moderate load will be better for you and your gun.

Sierra bullet #8445 165 gr JHP:
5.2 gr Unique (min) 850 fps.
7.0 gr Unique (max) 1150 fps.

Para Ordnance P-16 with 5" barrel

All bullets of identical weight are not the same - plated versus jacketed, bullet design, etc. It matters which bullet you are using.

I would take the opportunity to work up slowly to the max load while looking for signs of overpressure.

yes, Glock 20sf with a LWD 10-40 conversion barrel.
I use a 13 or 15lb spring for the powder puff target stuff, I plan on using the stock 17lb spring for any hot loads I use.

Not the same bullet and not the same load data.

Nevertheless, the Speer Reloading Manual #14 lists a load for a 165 gr TMJ-FN:

6.2 gr Unique (min) 882 fps - 1.120" OAL
7.2 gr Unique (max) 1064 fps - 1.120" OAL

S&W M4006 4" barrel

The TMJ-FN is about as close as I can get to FMJ.

Again, I would work up slowly because it just isn't the same bullet.

That 7.2gr charge is pushing Unique pretty hard. THere is no such thing as "a little hotter" whe it comes to small volume/high pressure rds like the 357sig or 40. Stick to book loads & match bullets as closely as possible to that data. All 165gr bullets are NOT alike.
You can go from mild to wild in as little as 0.2gr with some powders. Pressures are NOT linear once you reach working max. The pressure curve goes more vertical. The faster the powder the more vertical the pressure curve. Unique is pretty forgiving, but once you hit max in the 40, you really are at max.

I'm using a 165gr from Precision Delta with 6.3gr of Unique.
