View Full Version : Finally found "the" load for the G17
I've been a bit frustrated finding "the" load that my Gen 4 G17 would shoot well at 25 yards with my preferred bullet weight. I prefer 124 gr pills, and I just couldn't find a load that recoiled like I'd like and still shot adequately at distance.
Powders I tried:
Titegroup (average accuracy, soft)
Bullseye
WSF
N320
Silouette
AA#7
AA#5
AA#2
HP-38/W231
HS-6
Power Pistol (accurate, snappy, but too dang loud/flashy)
and finally
N340
4.8 grains, 124 gr PD JHP, .375 crimp, 1.085" OAL, CCI SP primer = 2.55" average of 2, 15 round groups at 25 yards from a rest. Clocked 1,055 fps avg.
4.8 grains, 124 gr MG JHP, .376 crimp, 1.085" OAL, Win SP primer = 1.5" average of 3-5 shot groups. 2.6" average of 2, 15 round groups at 25 yards from a rest. Clocked 1,105 fps avg.
Just a heads up for those striving for better accuracy. It's expensive, but worth it to me since my standby loads didn't produce.

using bullseye right now. I load a 124gr MG JHP to 1.085, but I use only 3.6g of the BE for ~1050 fps. At 25yds from a rest i'm not sure what my groupings are, but what i do know is when i miss a 0 zone on an idpa target or an A zone on a USPSA, it's my fault. The only thing i really hate about the BE is it's dirty...
on another note, which of those powders you've used would you say are the cleanest? I've used AA2 and BE mostly, both are dirty. My AA5 is yet to be opened...

I was having misses I didn't call, so I went to the rest and ended up with 6" groups with my N320 load. That wasn't going to cut it.
In my experience N320 is the cleanest, and shoots the softest of all of them. N340 is next (cleanliness), followed by Titegroup.
Clays is very clean also, but accuracy in 9mm is not up to par.

Try 700X and Autocomp in 124.
Try 4.5-5.0grs. WST with your 124gr. bullets. You'll like it from every aspect whether cleanliness, price, or accuracy.

How about WSF?
I don't use WSF in my target/mid-range loads. However, if +P is what your after here's a dandy:
Random case
Random SP primer
6.2grs. WSF
115-124gr. bullet
1.150" OAL
1250fps, give or take.
The most accurate hot 9mm load I've ever used. Scary accurate, really. Max in most books is 5.7grs. so start low and work up. Try it, you'll like it.

I use 7.8grns Blue Dot (compressed) under a Hornady 124 FMJ-FP. No pressure signs and ave Velocity is 1240.
Glock 17 2nd Gen.

I've tried a similar load:
Zero 115 FJM
1.140" OAL
CCI SP
6.05 grains WSF
1,300 fps at ~70 degrees near sea level
It's a handful. Accurate at 15 yards but I didn't test it at 25 yards.
In midrange target stuff, I've found 5.3 or 5.4 grains with a Zero 115 FMJ at 1.135" OAL to be the most accurate in a Glock.
V V powders are to expensive and to hard to get when you need it to be the powder.
4.8 grains of N340 will run you $.0158 per round in 4 lb. jugs.
5.3 grains of WSF will run you $.0118 per round in 4 lb. jugs.
Not a huge difference when you look at it on a per round basis :supergrin:.
