Looking at some load data on Hodgdon's website and I see they have a Trailboss load for the 458 Win Mag. Max load of 19gr gives velocity of 1123fps for a 385gr cast bullet. You guys think this is fast enough for deer or hog?

Keep in mind we have relatively small game here in Florida. The heat keeps them from getting too big.

Muzzle Energy(ft-lbs) = 1,083.78
Muzzle Energy(joules) = 1,460.94

I load a 240 cast bullet for the .44 mag a little less than that speed and it penetrates just fine. I think you'll be good.

Isn't that a lot slower than the standard .458 load?

Yes that is VERY slow. The Trailboss loads give about half the velocity of many other powders. That's actually the max load for Trailboss in that caliber/bullet weight.

If it's a hard cast, it's going all the way thru. If it's softer, it will act like the old 45-70 loads, probably fine for 100yd or less shots. Using 45-70 data in the 458wm will give sim results, a little less pressure & vel.

I'm trying to think of a good equivalent of where the OP will be... maybe maxing out a .45 Win mag or somewhere in the .454 Casull range if you could find a 350 grain bullet for it.

:dunno:

Regardless, I don't think you're going to find any thin-skinned game that's going to stop it.

On the lighter side.....
If a deer or a hog can run that fast, I'd best give up hunting...

Very true. The bullet really should be able to catch up with 'em.

Its not realy the speed of the bullet but the energy it has when it hits. Its slow but its still going 700 mph

You a funny man Jim.

What you say is correct. Since energy is a function of mass and velocity, I wondered if this velocity would give me enough energy to be effective.

After firing some 45-70 loads this weekend in the 1300+ fps range, I'm pretty confident it will get the job done. I'm leaning towards running it a bit faster than 1100.

Thanks for all the input.

I was all set to build a 300 Blackout when I started reading about the 450. Looked in the closet and found 4 boxes of 300gr xtp's from when I loaded my friend some 454's and thought it would make a good hog gun if I ever get to go. I can do a 300 next time.

There should be some data with H 4895 where you can take the 458 win mag down a good amount but still have a decent load. I thought about that myself, if I ever buy a 458. You can use the "60% rule" when you see data with H 4895.

I've shot several deer with .44 mag and .45 colt 240-260 gr bullets at about 1,100-1,200 fps. Kills them as fast or faster then a .30-06.

I think that .458 load would work fine.
