I'm sure many of you have seen or heard about the re-entry of the Coonan arms .357 Mag autopistol into the market ... but I wanted to post this for those who haven't.

Interesting to look at the similarities and differences between a 1911 style auto with the long, rimmed case of the .357 compared to the shorter, rimless 10mm auto case. In addition, the Coonan uses a linkless 1911 design similar to the Springfield Omega (think, Peter Stahl) or the Browning Hi-Power.

Anyways, enjoy....

Its interesting that the new pistol, (although admittedly awesome) gets so much attention over the more common, powerful and traditional 10mm 1911 as a powerful alternative to today's most popular calibers.

So it's official the Coonan is back....if I didn't have so many things on the burner I might have gotten one. Back in the day I wanted a Coonan so bad, I loved the .357 mag and still do. But now like then it's just out of reach. And as much as I would like one, it really doesn't seem practical for anything but cool-factor. I have a few GP100's that will feed my .357 bug when needed.

I really like the Coonan, too. But not more than my 10's.

Neat thread Nick.

Back in the day I wanted one of those, but the 10mm came out so there was no need for one.

I can't afford any "collectables" but if I could I'd purchase one. I've always been a fan of the .357. It and the 10mm are pretty much kissing cousins in my book.

Agreed that's why a long slide is on the short list. A long slide is something I can't live without and unlike the coonan I will have it.

HAHA! Yes, they are. Ass-kicking cousins that grew up together and kicked a lof of ass while doing it.

I was the SAME WAY before I got my Fusion. NO REGRETS AT ALL in my decision.

I would have considered that route before the SF's came out but now like I said it's a must have.

Actually a must have would be a single stack 10 in say a G36 size maybe :whistling:

Nice pistol. It'll be even better when one of you convert it to 10mm Magnum. I'm pretty sure it's possible without buying anything but maybe an even heavier recoil spring or lead tape on the inside of the slide. I'll be waiting!

I am thinking that one would be better off with a 10mm 1911 also, but it sure is cool. Now if Coonan decided to make one in .41 mag, that would be an attention getter.

Really cool gun, but I'd rather have my Delta (or any 10mm 1911) with 8+1 rounds, and no stupid keychain just so I can load another magazine.

I ordered a Coonan last April and received it in July. The Coonan is a blast at the range. It was a nice gun overall, but I prefer my Delta. I sold the Coonan a couple of weeks ago. I would have kept it, but I couldn't justify keeping a range toy that would see very limited use behind the Delta.

Despite the Coonan appearing to be much larger than the Delta it really didn't feel that way.

It seems to have no advantage over a 10mm. I would rather get a 1911 style pistol and put the .460 Rowland conversion kit from Clark Customs in it to obtain 1000 ft. lbs. of energy.

Well all I can say is I get equal performance from the 357Sig and even more performance from the 9x25Dillon and better still it was nothing but a barrel swap in either my S&W 1006 or the G-29! :whistling:

Don't get me wrong I like 357 Magnums in my revolvers and lever action rifle!

the coonan is hands down (for me at least) one of the coolest looking 1911's. I just like the lines of it and it's bulk yet sleekness.

dunno what it is, but it works for me.

would LOVE to shoot one for a box or two, but wouldnt "allocate money from other projects" to buy one.

cool ass gun tho!!

Going to bring this thread up again as I just got a old Coonan yesterday. Someone mentioned that there is a different spring to put in it to shoot 38 special. Is this true as mine only came with the one spring?

The Coonan is a sweet looking pistol, especially in this configuration: http://www.ammoland.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/coonan-classic-automatic.jpg

I shot one some years ago (yep, they were even sold in Belgium in the nineties) and sure wouldn't mind owning one of those new ones. Even the price is not too high, especially considering this is sort of a custom build pistol.

But this being a 10mm forum, it is hard to justify buying a Coonan when you got a perfectly good Glock 20 at home: 15 rounds of 10mm vs 7 rounds of .357, that's a no-brainer. But it's a very nice looking pistol, it is a very interesting design, and I read it really performs, so if I was living in the US and had some extra cash to spend I would certainly look into the Coonan .357. For folks who don't reload and want a powerfull pistol this should also be appealing, because even the cheapest 10mm round is kind of expensive and .357 (and certainly .38) is mostly quite a bit cheaper and easier to find. Of course as a non-reloader you can still buy a .40 barrel for your Glock and still be a lot cheaper of with your Glock + 2 barrels than with the Coonan .357. But as much as I love my Glock, the Coonan is clearly the sexier pistol.

I can't stand it when Nick and bac1023 start showing all these cool 1911's. :steamed: Write about 'em, talk about 'em, but stop with the pics man. Guys your going to cause me to have to buy one or two more. :whistling:

It's going to be all your fault. I need the Delta, and want the Coonan, or do I need them both, or just want them both... See what y'all have done ! :tongueout:

Other than a well made hog leg, there just ain't nothin like a well made 1911 ! ;)

Great stuff guys !
Be safe.

Oh man, your a real riot amigo. Here we go with the pics again. :faint:
Good thing i have a strong will power and an empty bill fold ! haha.

Actually, I just sold one of my Revolvers, (still have plenty) and have enough $$$ from that sale to get another M1911. But, it will (at this point) probably be another 45. I just have big bore fever. Had it all my life. But with "some" of them, ( big bore hog legs that is) my 60 year old wrist are starting to get a tad sore after a hundred rounds or so.

So... another 45ACP M1911 will /maybe satisfy me for now. You'll be the first to know and I will flood you with pics !

Gotta run...

Take care and stay safe pard. ;)
Go shoot your camera ! haha.
