View Full Version : Kabar?
I was going through my safe the other day and found my old Kabar I bought a few years ago. It seemed to have a decent factory edge and well built in design. I am pretty knew to "real" knives and just recently got a Benchmade Griptilian for my first. Are Kabar's still taken seriously as a hard use knife manufacturer or are they just riding out their name?
I'd say that they were designed as fighting knives as opposed to hard use.
The partial tang makes it less than desirable for a true hard use knife in my book.
Ka-Bar still makes a decent knife and it could most certainly perform a number of tasks well.
When I was active duty USMC, I put my Kabar through hell. I cut down a 5 inch diameter tree with it, dug with it, threw it, and generally abused it. I ultimately traded it for a case of wine while we were in Sardinia. It did all I asked of it, and then some. I replaced it when I was able, and while it didn't get the same amount of use/abuse, I still have it.
That being said, there are many better knives out there for hard use. There are also many that are not.
I love my US Army edition Kabar. Definitely a great knife but I don't put it through hard use. I wish the leather scabbard lasted longer though but it suffered rot from the abuse of 2 tours in Iraq.
