There are many types of holsters out there. Its hard to tell what YOU might like.
If your gonna go kydex, drop me a line. Ill get you set up:wavey:
Any holster is better than no holster. How do you want to carry it? IWB, OWB, Shoulder, SOB, etc. Also different situations dictate different carry methods. With a 17 I would look at holsters that offer a lot of forward cant.
My commonly used holsters for a concealed G17: M-TAC, Safariland 6378, SmartCarry, Fobus Paddle.
I use a Theis IWB Holster, love it...

Here is a GREAT solution for the 17. Nick is one of the up and coming leathersmiths in this country. His quality of materials and craftsmanship is worthy of the $100+ guys. Especially if you like to carry near 3:00, Nick's +1 IWB rides low and gives exaggerated forward cant to kick the grip up more vertical so it hides behind your arm. I just love this holster, and although mine was designed for my 17, it also works well for my 23. At $75 and with short turnaround times, this one is hard to beat. Oh yeah, it's also one damn pretty holster.

If you want a leather belt holster that will work for 17 and/or 19, I would highly recommend the blackhawk check six holster. It rides anywhere from the small of your back to slightly forward of your back pocket. Very high quality, very, very comfortable, and quick to draw from.

Galco vertical shoulder holster wouldn't be a bad idea. I've found carrying my G22 IWB is too hard to conceal if I have to sit down. Not too bad in a horizontal holster pretty good in a vertical. That's just me though.
Holsters are a very personal thing... Expect to have a nice collection by the time you find "the one". I can tell you I prefer Kydex IWB holsters... I've also grown to prefer AIWB carry.
I have a pile of holsters I'm selling so let me know I'll hook you up cheap. :)

You should get an MTAC or CTAC to play with strong side, cant, and ride heights. Also a Mr. Softy to see if you like AIWB. Those should answer some questions.
I have a like new Kramer FS in the ad section for a G17, but think the Comptacs would be better for a new carrier. '
Keep us posted! :)
