Shot the Colt today and the fireing pin stop came loose again, almost came off. I cleaned out the channel, was kinda dirty. What else might cause this?

Several possibilities.
Loose firing pin stop.
Weak firing pin spring.
Rough firing pin or channel
Interference with firing pin block (if Series 80.)

It's a series 80 new Combat Elite (5-600 rounds).

I would say something must be wrong with the firing pin return spring. It is either broken, too short, or has lost its temper.

I am assuming it has a standard, steel firing pin.

new EGW firing pin stop.

What kind of file would I use to fit it?

Lowe's has a set of starter files that you can use. Handy for basic 1911 work w/o paying too much for some nice Nicholson files.

My Springfield Loaded was disturbingly loose too. I went with a Wilson Bulletproof F/P stop. Easy fix, take your time.

Here's a good page with a few tips. I only had to stone and polish lightly breaking edges as described until I got the fit I was looking for. I used a stone from my Spyderco sharpener.

You shouldn't have to replace the stop. Try a new Wolff spring first.

If you shoot lead, the wax can muck things up and case the FP to stick. And, some waxes more than others; same with powders. I had my FP fly out once because I'd been lazy with cleaning. Was something like >800rds of a poor LRN I think. Cleaning the FP channel and FP cleared that up. I put a Wollf XP FP spring in anyway though.
