View Full Version : Bit by the P30S bug
I love my G19. But for some reason I've been looking at a few P30's lately and I really want one. Even my wife likes it and I pretty much have her approval to get one. I'm going to be looking for them in my LGS's to get my hands on them and see how they feel.
I'm a little torn between the DA/SA + decocker and the LEM though. I kinda like the decocker but from what I've read the LEM has the better trigger(also I've read the triggers are not all that great from some reviews).
I'd like to hear from some owners have to say.
I'm no brandwhore so I'm not worried about "betraying" any loyalty :tongueout:, if it fits my hand well and I shoot well that's all I care for.
I had the 9mm version of the P30. I loved it but ended up trading it for the .40 S&W version.
Having owned both the DA/SA and LEM versions, I like the DS/SA version. If for no other reason than I'm used to that style trigger system. I rather like the location of the decock on the P30.
As for the LEM version, I think the LEM system is the best feeling DAO trigger on the market. I really like the LEM trigger and would advise you to get a P30 with the LEM trigger if your a Glock guy.
The LEM will take a lot less getting used to than the DA/SA. There are people that say the triggers suck on the HK's. While they are a little heavier than others and sometimes a little gritty, they don't suck. To say they suck is a major exaggeration. Every HK that I have ever owned or shot had a very usable trigger and I didn't have one problem running speed drills with them. I also didn't have any trouble breaking clay pigeons out to 30+ yards, so the triggers can't be that bad.
Also, keep in mind that the standard LEM trigger breaks around the 8 pound range. HK offers a light LEM that brings the pull down into the 4.5 pound range! You may want to consider it if your used to the Glock.
:wavey:
Im in same boat as you, neoh212 thanks for the write up, are you a 40 guy(gal sorry) or what was the reason for the switch? how does the recoil handle from the 9 to the 40? I know unlike glock they use different spring weights so that helps. I am a 9mm guy, but for some reason this has been my biggest hold up with this gun(and the size is close to the 17 and wa told it was hard to iwb bc of texture) and dont know what caliber to chose. but having 4k of target and 1k of gd hp might push me to the 9
I was looking at p30 9mm/40 in v1

Thanks for weighing in!
I am leaning towards the LEM for that reason since I want to keep it pretty similar between systems, but I also like the thumb safety of the V3's...plus I found a decent deal on a slightly used one but still..:dunno:
I got to actually check one of each out today and I do like the decocker feature also...but they only have the LEM for sale the other two are range guns..which I'm gonna try to hit up this weekend and put some rounds downrange.
Decisions, decisions, decisions lol

I have nothing wrong with the 9mm cartridge and it's a very respectable one with a good track record. I'm a .40 gal. It's just a personal preference. I like the ballistics of the .40, I can shoot is as well as everything else and I feel it puts me in between the 9mm and .45 acp.
For all practical purposes, the .40 gives me the capacity of the 9mm with the knock down of the .45 in a compact package. Sure, the 9mm still has the capacity advantage and ballistically, the .45 still has the edge. With that said, the .40 has a lot going for it and a very good track record of it's own.
I feel that if I was going to carry a 9mm, I would be loading it with a +P or +P+ load for defense anyway. So if I'm going to do that, I might as well as go with the .40 and get a bigger and heavier bullet and a bigger hole to start with.
Like I said, it's personal preference and there is nothing wrong with the 9mm.
As far as recoil, I don't feel that the .40 version has much more recoil than the 9mm version running +P+ ammo. There is a little more muzzle flip with the .40. It's noticeable but not by much.
The reason that I ended up with the .40 version is I ordered the 9mm DA/SA version but my FFL ended up getting me the .40 version instead. He offered to send it back, I ended up taking it home and I'm glad I did! It's one of the softest shooting, best handling and most accurate polymer .40 caliber pistols that I have ever had the pleasure of owning!

I know how you feel. If it was me, and I wanted to stay with something as similar to the Glock DAO trigger as I could get. I would go with the LEM especially the light LEM.

+1 here but i'm a TDA guy just what i like and grown used to over the year's coming from shooting revolver's so much. I know many who are crazy about the light LEM and even better a GGI worked LEM. Even there i stay as stock as i can not much into trigger job's...

That's the way I am. My Sig 229 is DA/SA and is the trigger system that I prefer. I too come from shooting revolvers and as such, I'm much more used to a long DA pull. I only have one HK left with the LEM trigger and that's my P2000sk .40.
I don't mind DAO but I still shoot the DA/SA better and prefer that trigger system. I think if I ever went with a DAO gun again, it would be a HK with the LEM though as I think it's the best feeling DAO non-striker fired DAO trigger out there.
I'm a 1911 fan too and since I prefer AIWB carry I like safety and the ability to carry "cocked and locked" with the p30s. I admit I am finding myself leaning towards this one.
BUT, on that note I carry my G19 AIWB so if I get the LEM I don't feel any more concerned safety or no safety.
I didn't have a problem switching back and forth from my full size 1911 and my G19 since I shot them both often enough, so I'm not too worried about that...I do like keeping things simple though...
FML lmao, why is this so complicated? Honestly, I think if it wasn't for finding the "S" model at a good price, I'd just get the LEM.

I went LEM with my P30 because I like a consistent trigger pull. I just never got real comfortable with the DA to SA transition during rapid fire. Maybe if I shot ONLY DA/SA but since I shoot mostly striker fired (Glock, M&P) it's tough moving back and forth. The LEM works out great. I put in the mid-weight spring, really easy to do.

The transition from the DA to SA shot takes a little getting used to but like anything else, practice makes perfect! (Or at least as close to perfect as one can get anyhow.) It took me about 9 months of regular practice to get to the point where I could come out of the holster and engage the 8" plates at 25 yards and knock all 6 of them down in under 4 seconds. I'm working on trying to get that down to 3 seconds flat but I'm not there yet.
I could never warm up to the M&P. The gun feels good in my hand but the trigger feels funky to me. I just can't get used to it. It's a good gun though. The Glock has the best striker fired trigger IMHO.

Nice shootin'!

M&P does have a weird, much maligned, trigger but I shoot my M&P 45 better than any gun I have. As good as, if not better than, my Sig 229 in SA mode (and that sucker is a short LIGHT pull).
Thanks and sorry about the guy/gal mix up, I never look at avatars before posting. oops

Agree here also! I really like Todd Green showing and talking about the press out. It helps with a TDA gun more than i could ever have thought. I would sure like and plan to take one of his classes!! I hear alot about the PPQ trigger but to me it could be to light for me as a carry or HD/SD gun. Glock striker is as light as i think i would like. Link below. BTW, Great shooting!!
My HK45c i shoot better than any .45 i ever had. Very fast and alway's amazed how it hit's center most every shot even first DA pull and SA is a breeze. 200gr+P GoldDot's seem to be best but it shoot's any ammo very well!!

I have been working with this technique for a while and I will say that it takes a little practice to make the draw happen right every time. When you get it down pat where you can do it every time, let me tell you...
It certainly works wonders for fast aimed hits. It does in fact work!!!
I haven't tried any of the Speer +P yet in .45 auto. I will have to grab a few boxes and see how it does out of the full size HK 45.
Made my decision.
Getting a P30S. The pro's outweighed the cons IMHO. I will hopefully have it in a week or two. Thanks for all the input!

I have a 9mm P30s and like it alot!! Some complain about the long reset on the trigger but train doing the press out on the link i put in my post above. You will or should not notice it. I don't...plus i like a safety/decocker on my HK's!! Congrat's...
I saw the link and will be trying it out for sure. Mine is(will be), also a 9mm P30s.

The manual safety on HKs is my all-time favorite design. Excellent detents and easy to use.

I could not agree more!!
I couldn't either and that was one of the biggest Pro's about it for me. I like manual safeties and I'm used to a 1911 so this one just appealed to me more than the LEM or non safety DA/SA.
Lol, next week can't get here quickly enough!

You are making the right choice with the P30S 9mm v3. I own all of the guns mentioned in the thread and am a cocked and locked 1911 guy too. My only semi auto not capable of c&l is the glock 19 i carry iwb. I choose the glock 19 because it is ever so SLIGHTLY shorter in dimensions than my p30s. Basically the same size gun though. You'll want to baby the hk's and carry and toss around the glock19.
Further, you will want to carry that p30s cocked and locked. The single action pull is just fine for a non-1911 semi auto..only the trigger reset takes some getting used to. Its not awful, just the longest of any of my pistols: hk45c, p30s, glock19, dan wesson valor. 9 and 45 guy here too.
Enjoy the pistol. Its bad@$#. And has the BEST GRIP EVER. Buy a holster forit and some spare mags and enjoy her! Germans make the best stuff.
Thanks! I was hoping someone would chime in who did carry their P30s C&L.
I aleady have a raven ordered but I won't see it til Jun. I'm looking for an inbetween until then and will probably go with a crossbreed supertuck(I have 2), but I kinda want one for full coverage, good quality and no lead time lol.
I might baby it a little at first lol but I see it being my carry gun once I get confident with the trigger and maybe a few classes with it.

I choose the glock 19 because it is ever so SLIGHTLY shorter in dimensions than my p30s. Basically the same size gun though.
The P30 weighs 3.1 oz more, the mags are almost 3/4" inch longer with the same capacity, and the height is 5.5" vs 5" for the Glock. The P30 is also wider (though it is more "countoured" and less blocky than the Glock). The P30 is basically a full size pistol in terms of the grip length, which is the most important attribute when it comes to concealment. HK really could have made that grip length shorter, IMO. There is a lot of wasted space in the mag.
You don't much more size or weight efficient than a G19.

I wouldn't be surprised I've been thinking about it all day already. I ordered 2 more mags and I'm buying ammo just to shoot when it arrives. I have a Raven holster on order(should see that sometime around July :faint: ), but I'm looking for a decent "while I wait" holster.
I picked up a Tagua that is multigun use but it had the P30 listed. Had the Salesman try it out on one of the rental P30s so I know it will be a good, tight fit so I'll try it out. It's all leather but the body shield doesn't seem very stiff and it's not reenforced so I'm sure that will be the first thing that to go down. But I'm open to other options as well.
As far as sleeping with it goes, as long as it's empty, who cares:tongueout:

I hear Chuck Norris sleep's with a HK on the top if his pillow, :)
On the ammo i would shoot some 124gr Nato for a few boxes to start. Then move on to what 9mm SD ammo you like, sleep well...:embarassed:
Might get my HK45c out and put it next to me. Single guy's do get lonely...:tongueout:
I carry my USPc in a Ryan Grizzle IWB leather called the City Slicker. Great holster. But my HK45c in a TT Occidental Stronghold Phoenix pricey but worth it!!
Still waiting on my other P30s i special ordered. :wow:

OP,
Good job with ordering a couple spare mags (even though they are expensive).. I also have a total of 4 mags for my p30s 9mm. I originally intended for it to be my carry gun and IDPA gun. Took it to IDPA and 3gun a couple of times. Ended up carrying the glock 19 because, as others have stated the grip length is most important when carrying concealed. The g19 grip sticks out just a hair less when i bend, plus I don't have the same feelings for the g19 (workhorse) as I do the p30 (girlfriend).
I have a Crossbreed supertuck for concealed carry and a comptact OWB paddle holster for idpa or out on the "ranch" (same for the rest of my pistols). Also forgot to say my p30 has meprolight night sights..very pleased overall. I need to shoot the p30...and my carry gun g19 soon!...
Never will get rid of my HK's or any of my guns. Just don't expect a 1911 trigger from it and everything will be fine. Accuracy is there, like a 1911 though...
Glad you're getting a SWEET new gun.

Man dude, you're going to love it. I carried a G23 for quite a while. Had never really considered anything else. I was completely satisfied with it and it concealed well. Like said earlier, it's the top of the heap in the size/capacity contest. Then a gun store friend talked me into handling a P30S. It felt like it was made for me. I had handled the M&P several times and tried to like it, but it never settled in my hand quite right no matter wich grip size I tried. 10 seconds with the P30 and I started saving my pennies.
I went with DA/SA. Personal choice but I simply wanted a little more travel and resistance on the first shot. The decocker is shear genius. The DA pull is long but there's no stacking and is very smooth.
I was concerned about printing. What I came to find out is it conceals as well, and sometimes better than, my G23. I believe all the angles and contours go a long way in helping it to blend in with the folds and wrinkles of a shirt. I still love the G23 and will never sell it. But it does now spend it's days laying in the safe. And it's always a good idea to have a ready back up.
I use a black MS SSII, smooth side out. It works well at keeping it tucked in close. I also have a Southern Holsters "Memphis" for the times I'll be out all day hiking around and such. Also an awesome holster.
One thing I recommend is take some 400 grit sand paper and run about 10 or 12 strokes on the grip panel that will be against your skin. Helped a lot for me in the comfort department yet still plenty of texture for good grip.
People note the price of magazines. I don't see a problem. Glock mags are now in the mid to upper 20's. The P30 mags are about $10 to $15 higher at low 30's to about $40. And the HK mags feel like you could drive over them with a truck and not hurt them.

I have a couple of SuperTucks already(1911, G19) and will probably get one for the P30 too. I'm more of an AIWB guy but some days I like to carry normally:whistling: My Trijicon night sites should be here before the pistol gets in to my ffl.
It is not brand new, it is slightly used. Picked it up off a guy on another gun forum almost new. But I'm still gonna run some decent ammo through it when I get it. A whooole bunch of it.

I thought it looked great for a while but when I got one in my hand...it was love at first grip:rofl:
Thanks for the tip on the grips. I will be carrying it but will probably be wearing an undershirt 80% of the time too but that 20% could be uncomfy.
The price of magazines doesn't really bother me either, hell I buy wilson's for my 1911 so these were still cheaper than those:rofl: I did get one of those awesome midway range bags(on sale for $40), when I ordered them too, man you can't beat that price for that thing it's HUGE!!:wow:
Well, after a move and 30 days of leave I can say I finally have my P30!
I've been busy with the move so I haven't shot it yet but will by the end of the week. For sure. I have 500 rounds just for it!
