I just picked up a USP 40 V3 departmental trade-in from a local LE distributor. It’s my 3rd HK; I have a Grade B P7 PSP and a HK45. The only other 40 cal I have is a Gen 1 Glock 23 that I did a .25 cent trigger job on and no longer carry. I inspected a crate load of USPs and picked one that looked like it was carried very little (some were pretty beat). The green & orange night sights are about 50%. I got 3 LE/Mil mags dated 10/94. $500.00 out the door.

I took it to the range and put 100 rounds of WWB through it. I have to say it’s the ‘softest’ shooting 40 cal I have ever shot. Nowhere as snappy as my G23 or my buddy’s XDm. Dead on accurate; I was keeping 2”-3” groups doing some casual standing at 15 yards. The SA trigger was pretty crisp, with juts a hint of take-up. The DA pull was long, but not especially heavy or stacking. I have to say the best trigger I’ve felt on a plastic gun; better than my HK45.

I was surprised to see that none of the magazines had metal feed lips. Nonetheless they all fed well from locked the slide back after the last round. I’ve never been one to drink the HK cool aid. I’ve wanted a P7 since I was a teen and traded a SW686 for it when the opportunity presented itself. I drooled over the HK45 hoping it would the next military sidearm, but when the JSP program fell through I made it appoint to get a HK45 and have one of early German made models.

All-in-all I am very impressed with this gun. It’s making me think I should have gotten one a lot earlier. Am I sipping the cool aid or what?

It's been my experience as well that HK has the softest shootin' .40s around. I'm kind of sorry I let my USP 40 go, but OTOH it was too large for carry so it was the right decision.

My next HK will probably be a P2000 or SK in .40.

I picked up a second hand USP-40 police trade-in with the H&K tactical light last year. The gun was in near perfect condition. After owning several Glocks in .40S&W, I sold them and decided to shoot only 9mm and .45acp in my handguns since I had reloading equipment for those cartridges and didn't particularly care for the shooting characteristics of the .40S&W.

At the time of purchase I only wanted the tactical light for my USPc 45 from the gun but bought a box of ammo and tried it out for giggles. I was very impressed with how the USP handled the powerful .40S&W rounds. It was the softest shooting and most accurate .40 caliber gun I had ever fired. If felt more like a 9mm than a .40S&W. Then a retired military guy offered me for more it than I paid for the gun to begin with, without the light, so I no longer have it. I would buy another in on a heartbeat, great pistol!

Another congrats on buying a great gun.

I’ve never really cared for the 40S&W personally, that’s why I never bought another after my G23. It just had so much muzzle flip. I love 1911s and feel nothing shoots as good as that platform. I carry a Sig P228 at work and G19 off duty and never considered a 40 cal because of the way it shoots. I have to admit this USP 40 has given me reason to pause. It shot really well and I cannot get over how nice the trigger is. I was dry firing and comparing it to my HK45 and have to say it really puts the 45’s trigger to shame.

Congrat's on a Great gun!! I agree HK is a very soft shooting .40....on your HK45 some range time and dry firing will do wonder's for the trigger!
