Just heard on Fox News that some massive Solar Flares are headed our way and there could be possible satellite problems, cell phone disruption and even power grid disruption. Seems like this is just the beginning of all that's going to happen in 2012.

It hit us 9am EST and will continue until tomorrow.

So far nothing is happening, I got to remember to look outside to check for northern lights.

Actually things DID happen. Planes had to be rerouted and the power companies had to dial things back to stop the power from going out. This is just the start of the Solar Flare cycle, these were just small ones, wait until we start getting larger ones.
For a Survival/Preparedness forum ya'll sure do take things lightly. Guess they should have a "Stick my Head in the Sand" forum around here for ya'll to hang out in.:tongueout:

These solar flares are proof of man-made global warming.

Solar flares are actually good for Ham Radio. All that energy ionizes the upper atmosphere which facilitates bouncing radio signals off the atmosphere much easier.

Messed up my XBox live wireless connection. Had to plug in the CAT5. Shucks.

Bush is responsible for the flares! It's his fault.

Thank God Obama saved us from the solar flare disaster though! It was a close one.

Ok. So what is the individual supposed to do in anticipation of a solar flare?

Examples. It took a while before people learned the value of surge protectors to protect computers, televisions or refrigerators. Or, it took a while before it was so glaringly obvious in my area that clearing brush around homes to reduce the risk of fires led to laws permitting brush clearing entries by local authorities.

What does a person on this forum do?

Yeah, I can't believe we didn't worry more about this event, which came and went with nothing happening.

Do what you always do - have enough supplies, and experience and training to use them, to survive for a few weeks with no support. Be prepared to leave the house if you have to, as a last resort.

Seriously, the power going out temporarily, due to a solar flare, is not the end of the world for most people.

I don't know, there's over 800 Million folks on Facebook that'd probably disagree with ya'. :whistling:

If the power went off where I live, it is an absolute disaster. People are dependent on the traffic lights, the fast food restaurants, and the telephone. Without television and toilet paper, they are totally panic stricken.

LOL. I know a few people who'd kill themselves without the internet. Most of the Appletistas will go into a heroin like withdrawal.

Solar flares have caused problems, but the fact is none of us know what the extent of the damage would be if a big one hit. The magnetosphere is a strange thing. I have written my congressman to fund beefing up the power grid as a sensible precaution, but I think a lot of the solar flare/EMP stuff is hysteria to help sell MREs.
