I have only one type of rifle (ar15), but want more. So I was wondering which ones you folks consider the most fun to shoot. Thanks to all.

01-25-2012, 10:11
M1 Garand
Accurate ones.

01-25-2012, 10:13
leveraction rifles.

01-25-2012, 10:16
I haven't shot a ton of rifles, but of the ones I've shot, I enjoyed shooting M1A and 10-22 probably the most.

01-25-2012, 10:16
AR15.. light recoil, easy to make hits.

PS90.. EXTREMELY light recoil, accurate, big mag for lots of fun.

Mosin Nagant.. fun for the first 3 rounds.

Lever guns.. hard to beat, and who doesn't want to play Cowboy now and then?

Any reliable .22 auto.. extremely cheap ammo, so much fun to just walk around plinking at different targets.

01-25-2012, 10:26
REM 700

01-25-2012, 10:30
Pre 64 Winchester model 70 264 Win. Mag.
Used to years ago My Sako Safari 375 H&H Mag.
Now probably My Colt AR.

10/22 by Ruger. BAR/30'06. Ar-15.

01-25-2012, 10:33
Ruger 10/22

S&W M&P 15-22

Mosin Magant

38/357 Lever Action Rifle

Outdoor Hub mobile, the outdoor information engine

01-25-2012, 10:39
i really enjoy Marlin 444 or 45LC and 44 mag lever guns. if you can ever get your hands on some 50 BMG, they can be enjoyable too.

01-25-2012, 10:44
M14/M1A. One of the most pleasant .308's to shoot. It's a gentle push. And it feels so smooth.

01-25-2012, 10:53
M&P 15-22 - just plinking awesomeness in an AR tacticool package. Bonus points w/ supressor!

Mosin Nagant! Old skool Russian front Kaboom! Or any of those: Garand, enfield, Mauser, etc...

AK-47 - You just don't have to care!!!!

.357 Lever - Cowboy fun, all day w/ .38's!!!!!

01-25-2012, 11:00
Ruger 10/22
Remington 700
K98k Mauser
M1 Garand
Marlin 1895 in .45-70
Marlin 1894 in .44 Magnum

The worst. . . . Ruger #1 in .375 H&H Magnum! Painful.

ETA: NOTHING adds to the "Grin Factor", like the 1918-A1 B.A.R.!!! :)

01-25-2012, 11:05
Anything that is reliable, easy to hold, and not punishing to shoot.

Ex: I really enjoy shooting my Moss590 with a Knoxx stock, but didn't like shooting it with the stock stock.

01-25-2012, 11:13
I enjoy shooting my Winchester 30-30 Trapper and my K98k the most. With the cost of ammo, though, i dont shoot them much.

01-25-2012, 11:19
I would have to second the vote for the PS90 and add the FS2000. The FN rifles are tons of fun to shoot and it just seems like you are shooting something out of the future.

01-25-2012, 11:21
AR 15
Ak 47
M1 garand
Winchester 94
700 Remington
Enfield 303
98 Mauser
Barrett 82

Those models just right of the top of my head!

I have only one type of rifle (ar15), but want more. So I was wondering which ones you folks consider the most fun to shoot. Thanks to all.

My most favorite rifles to shoot are:

COLT AR-15 Hbar
M-1 Garand
1903/03-A3 Springfield
.22 LR Ruger 10/22 and 77/22

01-25-2012, 11:29
M1 Garand
Accurate ones.

This times 100......its one of the best shooting rifles out there...

a well setup rifle in .50bmg. ie, good muzzle break, stock, and whatever other recoil reducing items are made for them.
i fired one at a gun show once. had about as much kick as a .22LR but i could feel the pressure wave. the ballistic performance is cool, but if you ever get the chance its worth it to pay the $20 or whatever just to fire one.

01-25-2012, 11:38
Norinco SKS
Russian SKS
Yugo SKS
Romanian SKS
Albanian SKS

01-25-2012, 12:11
I had a Rossi(pre-Taurus) Pump Carbine in 22lr, it was a blast to shoot. You could also shoot shorts or longs in it as well as long rifle. One of the few guns I actually miss having.

01-25-2012, 12:43
Ruger 10/22
M1 carbine

01-25-2012, 12:59
A flintlock.

Henry makes them if your interested.

I'll have to vote for any lever action
The M1 Carbine and the M1 Garand

01-25-2012, 13:27
10/22 or any variation SKS.

01-25-2012, 13:32
Browning M1919a4 (or -a6 if you want a true "rifle" and not just a long gun). This gun (or any tripod mounted belt-fed) is about the most fun you can have with your pants on. The one I have is semi-auto only, and even it is a hoot to shoot. The FA rate of fire on the originals was so slow anyway that you can easily approximate it with a semi- and a fast trigger finger. Definietly turns heads at the range, and when on the tripod it has ZERO recoil.

Ruger 10/22 with a "BMF Activator". It's just a .22, but the "gatling style" crank-fire adapter makes it stupidly fun.

Other fun rifles:
M1 Garand
M1 Carbine

01-25-2012, 13:33
Ruger 10/22
Colt AR-15 model LE6920
Any leaver gun
Not necessarily in that order

I don't have a lot of recent experience with any other Rifles. But I own or have owned/had access to these and they are all a blast

If it's akrit, it's fun to shoot.

01-25-2012, 13:52
1. I had a Remington Model 12A .22 when I was a kid and shot the crap out of it. So much fun it was hard to get me to do anything else in my spare time. I still have it but it is retired now.

2. Remington 721 bolt in 30-06. I used this rifle as I started to reload and worked up loads from 110 spire point to 180gs Nosler Partitions. Lots of fun weekends shooting this gun.

3. Marlin 39A... smooth lever that shoots all day.

4. M1 Garand... ping!

5. AR15... what is not to like.

6. Ruger 10-22

7. M14SA at 600 yards. Fun to shoot long range with an 18 power scope.

8. Winchester 88 lever in .308.

9. Remington 1903A1... hey, I like the 30-06.

10. Marlin 340 in .22 Hornet. Shot that thing to death... when it broke I bought a NEF in Hornet and find the trigger lacking. It is fun to shoot though.

never enough

Thanks to those who posted. I was hoping to spot a clear top pick, but I'm still looking.

Sweet, thanks for the link, didn't know this but I've got it bookmarked now.

Thanks to those who posted. I was hoping to spot a clear top pick, but I'm still looking.

Using a completely UN-scientific method of analysis. . . . the M1 Garand is a Top Pick!!

01-25-2012, 18:45
Mosin Nagant.. fun for the first 3 rounds.

No kiddin'

Those things kick like a mule and it's a sharp painful kick that feels like it sends a shockwave to your brain after several rounds.

I love shooting my AK - it's recoil isn't too bad, but big enough that you feel you've got something behind you and it's a nice compact size.

10/22 is also very fun.

01-25-2012, 19:13
Supprssed rimfire is my tops. /10-22/ but my favorite is my bolt action savage

sbr'd ar

anything full auto

01-25-2012, 19:30

Thomson paratrooper, lots of fun no recoil.

01-25-2012, 19:47
A flintlock.

This. Pure, simple, elegant.

01-25-2012, 19:48
-Ar15 for sure
-m1 carbine
-black powder rifles
-Beretta Cx4, but I'd imagine any pistol caliber would be equally fun
-Red Rider, not kidding. It's probablly the most fun you can have with a gun in your basement or garage. Several layered large peices of thick cardboard for a backstop and tin cans. Provided hours or safe very cheap fun
-lever guns
These are the ones I have found to be the most fun so far.

01-25-2012, 19:52
Registered M16 lower with dedicated .22LR upper. Magazines go by QUICK, but at least they're cheap.

01-25-2012, 19:56
Sako Finnwolf

M1 garand

Spanish Destroyer

Martini Henry in 450/500

01-25-2012, 20:30
M1 Garand
Enfield no 4 Mk1/2

01-25-2012, 20:31
M1A/M14, I just got one and they are in a league of their own. Nothing feels better than rocking and locking that HUGE 20 round mag and racking the bolt. Plus they are just plain sexy.

01-25-2012, 20:34
AR15, Mini 14, and 10/22 are my favorite!

01-25-2012, 20:35
Don't forget how much fun the M1 Carbine is to shoot.

01-25-2012, 20:36
Picking 10 is tough, but I'll give it a try.

10. Savage MKII .22LR (amazing accuracy IMO I actually own this rifle)
9. Mini14 (lots of controversy, but I like Ruger and think this rlfle is under apprecitated)
8. SKS (nuff said, great shooter and fun caliber)
7. Mosin Nagant (cheap rifle and ammo)
6. Mauser K98
5. Swiss K31
4. M1 carbine (my only complaint is ammo costs, other than that fun)
3. AR15 (just a fun gun, and very popular plinker right now)
2. M1 Garand
1. M1a

01-25-2012, 20:42
The mini-14 was always a hoot with a groundhog in the peep. Then I started blowing them up with the KAC-556. Sorta the grow-up version of the mini.

01-25-2012, 21:43
Assuming full auto is off the table because of cost. Assuming that the person can load their own to get the most out of any platform.

Bolt rifle in a medium bore rifle. It needs to be accurate. It needs a scope. A Remington M700 BDL in 30-06 would be a good example. A second example would be a Steyr Scout in 308.

A very accurate 22LR. Shooting 100 yards plus with a 22LR, calculating drop and calling your shot when others at the range shooting more powerful cartridges can not. If you have access to 1000 yard plus range you could do it with a 308, but then you would get pounded with recoil and have to pay more for ammo.

Varmint rifle. Get something in a heavy barrel in 223. I have a light barrel Remington BDL in 222Rem.

Semi-auto 22LR with detachable magazines. I would suggest a 10-22.

A large bore safari rifle…you need to reload to make pleasant shooting. I like my 458WM.

M1 Carbine. The history is great, the recoil is minimal, the power sufficient enough.

AR-15 in 5.56, is good for refined precision. It is a gun to spend time with at the range. You can work on accuracy and precision or go about blazing away.

AK-47 clone, is boring. It runs. Now if you want to suppress it, and play with subsonic and supersonic rounds…..well then it becomes interesting again. OR if you have a combat course ….

Black powder preferable a large bore and flint lock.

A suppressed SBR. There are lots of options here. I have a couple, but this is a much larger conversation.

01-25-2012, 22:37
Any Remington 700 heavy barrel or big-bore dangerous game rifles.

01-25-2012, 23:02
M14/M1A. One of the most pleasant .308's to shoot. It's a gentle push. And it feels so smooth.

Although enjoyable to shoot, I don't put the medium bore semi-autos in the top 10 because of ammo cost.

01-25-2012, 23:44
*baretta cx4 storm .45acp carbine

*drozd full auto bb-gun

*semi-auto .17hmr (magnum lite mach2)

*AR15 varminter

*ruger 10/22 w/cheap scope

*I know it's not a rifle but my other favorite gun to shoot is: http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/imagepreview.asp?mid=013294

01-25-2012, 23:58
The point is being missed here. For recreational shooters, almost all rifles are fun to shoot, whether it's a humble 10 meter air rifle of a 50 cal on steroids.

If fun is easy logistics for day-long shooting, then the lower caliber end will work. For long distance challenges, then I can say that any gun that can still be worked by one man is fun.

01-26-2012, 00:41
no point is being missed. The OP asked which ones were funnest to shoot. a fun thread.

01-26-2012, 01:16
a fun thread.
Now I get it. Am strangely comfortable with the idea.

01-26-2012, 07:54
I mentioned the Mini-14 and the KAC556 earlier but I agree that you don't need a lot of fire power to have a lot of fun. have a RWS Diana Corp. spring air piston (Model 48) in .177 that has given me hours of entertainment for very few dollars. What a sweet accurate shooter it is!

01-26-2012, 11:00

Winchester 90 or 06 for sure on my most fun list as well.

I'll have to ponder further, later.

My PERSONAL favorite is the M1 Garand. I like my "Tanker" variant the best.

Thanks for all the input.

I ordered a Remington 700 SPS AAC-SD today.
What Scope, rings, base would you recommend to go with it?
I’ll be shooting from 100-600 yards. Thanks…

05-08-2012, 14:29
It's fun to shoot 25-06 long range.
Also fun to shoot a 22lr revolver.

05-08-2012, 16:01
Anything in black power, they smell like fireworks and you get to enjoy the "fog of war"

05-08-2012, 16:03
:embarassed: ooops, "black powder" that shoud read

05-08-2012, 16:04
Marlin Model 39 is most fun to shoot. Winchester '73 is next most fun. Ruger #3 is next after those two levers. Remington Model 7 rifles are wonderful to handle and shoot. Marlin 1895 rifles are fun when something has to be stopped immediately. Ruger 10-22 rifles can be a lot of fun if you have reliable ammo. And, High Walls can be a pleasure to carry and shoot, once come-ups are established.

05-08-2012, 22:29
10/22. Any lever gun.

05-08-2012, 23:05
AR .223
Mkiii fluted
20 gauge pump

05-09-2012, 08:29
The Marlin 45-70 levers are a ton of fun to shoot. The "light" trapdoor loads are not bad on recoil, and if you are a recoil junkie the Buffalo bore 405 gr @2000 FPS will give you a thrill. Will stop anything on the planet.
